Tommies +/-...+20...Huskies win.

I don't know if that title does any justice to anything. What does it really say? It says there were bright spots tonight and the Tommies will be doing battle again tomorrow night after bowing out to Saint Mary's 6 to 5 in overtime.

They boys came out ready to fight and it showed when Ryan Murphy scored a highlight reel goal at 1:35 by walking around several Huskies before depositing the puck behind Brandon Verge with a nifty move. Assists to Justin Roy and Brad Gallant. Goal #2 was scored by Jason Cassidy on a goal mouth scramble with Wes Welcher and Jason Rinzler getting the helpers. Before the first was over STU went up three when Andrew Estey made all the right moves after the feed from Brad Gallant. 3 to zip for the good guys after 1 period.

Second period roles around and the Tommies fall two men down after successive penalties to Wes Welcher and Bryan Main. SMU scores. St. Thomas gets a 50 second power play opportunity and Jason Rinzler bangs one in from the side of the net with 1 second left in the PP. Jason Cassidy with the good feed and Welcher with his second helper on the night get the assists. 4 to 1 for the good guys heading to the third.

Third period comes and the first 6:23 goes along alright but at this time Erick Tremblay gets a protocol violation penalty. OK, SMU scores on the PP. The Tommies come right back 13 seconds later when Devan Praught feeds Corey Banfield who does a little shake and bake to regain the 3 goal margin. This is where the fun really starts. SMU takes a penalty but it is negated a few seconds into it when Bryan Main "hooks" a streaking Husky player. OK. He also gets a 10 minute misconduct. OK. Ryan Lehr gets a "holding" call at 10:27. SMU scores on the 2 man advantage at 12:13 but not before Brad Gallant gets a high sticking call at 11:30. SMU scores at 13:19. With the one goal lead, the Tommies clamp down. At 18:49 Erick Tremblay gets called for "Cross checking". OK. SMU pulls Verge. SMU scores with 17 seconds left. We are going to overtime.

In the extra frame Keith Wynn gets called for "interference" at 36 seconds. SMU scores at 1:29 for the win.

Here is what I can tell you. STU had 3 minutes and 6 seconds of PP time on 3 opportunities and scored 1 goal on 1 shot.

SMU had 17 minutes and 39 seconds of PP time on 14 opportunities and scored 6 goals on 29 shots.

SMU outshot STU 60 to 15. Ben MacFarlane took the loss in the STU nets while playing a great game.

  1. that was an unbelieve attrosity in reffering tonite. SMU should be arrested for "stealing" the game for sure. The boys deserved to win this game. They really worked their tails off and even tho we end up on the losing side of things, we can take away some positives. But with the referee, it was reminding me of that game between the US and Canada womens from 2002 olympics. The one penalty that really go me and i wanted to yell but i cant since i am behind a camera was the ghost holding the stick on Banny when he was getting hooked. Looking forward to reading the Gleaner article tomorrow about it

  2. Just one thing to say about the refereeing: Hahahahahahahahahaha. There's a reason I played the Chicken Dance in the OT.

Without MacFarlane in the net SMU would have won anyway. You don't outshoot a team 55-15 in three periods without winning. SMU was the better team for the majority. However, finally the breaks go our way, and then it's taken away.

Where do you think the confidence of the boys is now?

  3. PS - SMU's fourth goal was kicked in. Clearly. None of this redirect crap. I think it was a makeup for blowing the whistle too early on SMU in the second period.

  4. Thanks for posting the play by play. It was probably more exciting than watching the Tommies play. So how many have the refs taken from them this year 14 or 15? The 10-0 and 8-0 losses etc must have been obvious referees were being bought out.

  5. That's unfair. I'd daresay no one has complained about referees all season long, until last night. I see more Squirrels complaining about referees on HFBoards than I do here. Sob, sob, we didn't get our 11th goal because of the referee. Sure, UNB are winners, but sore ones. Heck, Macdougall WINS, but only by a goal and in a shootout no less and he's too sore to stick around to face the newspaper.

  6. I hope Josh Hurley doesn't give up his day job and decide to do this for a living, because he would be in the poor house.
He makes Thayer Doyle look good. That is a scary thought.
I realize That STU didn't play real smart at times in the third, but thet was no penatly in OT.

  7. You Tommie fans are certainly one of a kind... what exactly does UNB have to do with your loss to SMU the other night. You'll blame everyone else for the losses this year except for the people that you should be blaming... that being the players and coaching staff. The Tommies will never turn themselves around until they start taking responsibility for their own actions and stop making excuses.

  8. I do not belive anyone blamed the Squirrels I think it was the Referee. I guess the Squirrels must be God's team because they do nothing wrong and never complain about anything. Whoever you are should for example check out The December1 editon of the Daily Gleaner and all the complaining that when on after the game.
I guess it is ok for them to complain ,when they do so,because they seem to think they are better then everybody else. We'll see come March.

  9. As I doubt STU will have anything to do with March hockey, I really don't think you're in any position to be making those type of comments. However, if UNB does get beat either in the playoffs or at the Nationals, we both know that it certainly won't be by STU.

  10. This back and forth is getting ridiculous. Yes STU is having a rough year, yes UNB is a dominant force. There are reasons for both of these situations, but most of it is attributable to recruiting, the success of which has a lot to do with course offerings and money. Everyone just get over it snd move on.

  11. yeah, this has been some mindless banter between stu and unb fans. STU is going through a hard time and UNB is prosperous. But remember, STU has all freshmen and somphmores and in a few years, it will be a different story.

All we are saying is that UNB complains about games when they win. Hopefully Alberta or another team knocks them off their high horse, or STU beats them on wednesday

  12. UNB will not get beat by STU along the way in the Playoffs but it could be somebody. It may be before the Nationals. They will complain till next October.
It is true in a couple of years or next year STU will be backand they could win it all at the AUC.
    GO STU Go on WED.

  13. There is a difference between complaining..and seeking to be better...UNB seeks to be better and improves on what they did wrong, STU is complaining about the situation and not looking at the root cause. When UNB lost nationals last year there was not one single word on why they lost outside of Alberta had a better night and a hot goalie. STU can improve, but needs new leadership.
