May 27th, 2007. Your Not Alone.....and We Salute You!!

STU fan remains stalwart

I read Albert El-Khoury's letter in the May 1 edition of the Gleaner.

I realize everyone has the right to express their own opinion which is why there is freedom of speech and this newspaper to do so.

He made a couple of statements that I question and misquoted me.

I wonder why he was so astonished with my letter since he said in his that I am a superfan of St. Thomas University. I am sure there are many happy University of New Brunswick fans and others as well, but there are also those who would not be happy at the opposing team winning the championship.

I said in my letter I had no problem with the mayor declaring a day for UNB [AKA Squirrels*] to mark their victory. My problem was with him assuming everyone is proud.

I commend fans such as El-Khoury who can cheer for both UNB [AKA Squirrels*] and STU, but my allegiance is with STU, and I am not alone.

March 12th, 2007. Good Soldiers Fall to ST FX.
Tommies 2 - X-men 4. Consolation Final.

Good soldiers die where they fell and the 2006-07 Tommies fought to the bitter end before they did. STU scored 2 goals in the third to make it close, both to Kyle McAllister in his swan song for the Green and Gold. Aaron Molnar made 31 saves in the loss and St. Nick Theriault played injured in an attempt to keep the season alive. DG Story by Bill Hunt

Thank you to Kyle McAllister, Thatcher Bell, Chris Cook, Aaron Molnar, and St Nick for your dedicated years of service. Best of luck in all your endeavors.

March 10th, 2007. Tommies “X”ecuted in Antigonish.
Tommies 2 - X-men 8. Consolation Final.

The Tommies got a couple of the walking wounded back tonight just in time to play Game 1 of the Consolation Final versus ST FX. Matt Seymour and Aaron Molnar played for the first time in weeks but they couldn’t make the difference for the Green and Gold.

The X-men jumped out to an early first period lead only to have the Tommies respond playing 4 on 4 when Justin Bowers from Bell and Bateman tied it. X scored again but back came STU on the PP with Miguel Delisle scoring from Ian Turner and Kyle McAllister.

The second period started off alright but when Anthony Butera was kicked out of the game for checking from behind, the short staffed Tommies suffered. It may not have been on the Butera power play but the team seemed to deflate soon after. The banged up and bruised defence corps could not afford to lose one of their key guys. X rattled off 2 goals mid way through the period and a heart breaker late. The 5th goal for X appeared to be caught by Aaron Molnar but the X forward was close enough to the crease to bang it in. I defy anyone to tell me that the loss of St. Nick Theriault doesn’t hurt. The intangibles this guy brings are immense.

The third period got worse and with only 6 minutes gone the Tommies were down 5 goals. With no quarter back on the PP and the big hitting Bourbeau and St Nick out, ST FX cruised to the win and into our goalie one to many times. The Tommies come home on Monday night and will try to rebound at 7 PM and force game 3. Come out and support our Tommies.

March 4th, 2007. Tommies Wait For Another Chance.
Tommies 3 - Aigles Bleus 6. AUS Semi-finals.

It wasn’t meant to be this year against Moncton. A strong first period led to more trouble in the second and third, which the Tommies were unable to deal with. St. Thomas will now wait for the loser of UNB vs. ST. FX for another chance at Nationals.

STU started strong this evening and scored the first two goals. Justin McCutcheon from Jeff Bateman got things rolling at 3:21 and then less then a minute later Miguel Delisle scored on the PP from McAllister and Butera. Penalties cost the Tommies when Moncton scored late in the first to cut the deficit in half.

The 2nd period was owned by U de M as they scored 2 more to take the lead. Things got really bad half way through the period when Ian Turner got kicked out for a “Hit to the Head” call that the Moncton player truly embellished. The poor guy needed to be helped from the ice but didn’t seem any worse for wear in the third when he returned to the game. Shortly after Ian left, Ryan Card was helped off the ice with an injury. 3 regular defencemen left and down by a goal. Not good. It didn’t get better and Moncton rattled off 3 more goals in third before Chris Cook from McCutcheon and Bell scored the 3rd Tommies goal, to little, to late. Guilllaume Miszczak got the call in nets and looked really good facing 39 Moncton shots. We wait to see who we play next. DG Article

March 3rd, 2007. Tommies Quest Ends at Finals.
Tommies 0 - Aigles Bleues 4. AUS Finals.

The Tommies were good soldiers today and did their best to bring the AUS women’s championship to St. Thomas but they ran into a flock of hungry birds. The Tommies strong goaltending was there but the you can’t win a hockey game from behind your own blue line and Moncton did a phenomenal job of playing in STU’s end.

Moncton had period leads of 1-0 and 4-0 and shut the door in the third. Emily Hobbs did all she could stopping 37 of 41 shots while her opposition only faced 9. A very good crowd turned out at the LBR to cheer on the Ladies. It may not have been the result they wanted but nevertheless here is a huge well done and thanks. You guys are amazing, we are all very proud of you. DG Article

Congratulations to U de M and best of luck at Nationals. Do the AUS proud. Bon Chance.

March 2nd, 2007. TOMMIES WIN! STU IN FINALS!!
Tommies 3 - X-Women 2. AUS Semi-fianls.

In what can only be called a STUnning upset, the upstart Lady Tommies defeat first place ST FX. If memory serves correctly, this will be the first AUS women’s finals without St Mary’s or ST FX participating. In today’s game Emily Hobbs made 44 saves and the Tommies made the most of their opportunities to pull out the HUGE win. The Tommies will face U de M in the finals tomorrow afternoon at the LBR. You’d be crazy to miss it!!

St FX was first on the board with a power play goal a little over 4 minutes in. Amy MacLennan scored on the PP at 18:26 from Lucrece Nussbaum to keep the game knotted heading to the second period. The Tommies kept the 1st ranked X-Women off the score sheet in the second, thanks in large part to Emily’s great play.

Malin Storas got things rolling in the third at 4:38 unassisted. The Ladies would never look back and Caroline Hammerheim from Amy MacLennan at 14:55 scored the eventual game winner. X narrowed the margin to 1 with 22 seconds left but a STUnned St FX bench was left to ponder what just hit them. It was the Tommies Train. CONGRATULATIONS on this huge win and see you tomorrow afternoon at the LBR!!! DG Article

In men’s action this evening from Moncton, the Tommies were hit with a 6 - 0 loss to U de M. Matt Davis took the loss in nets. Ian Tuner left the game in the second period and did not return. The Tommies come back to the LBR on Sunday night at 7 PM and will show Moncton a good time. DG

March 1st, 2007. Tommies Trounce Tigers.
Tommies 8 - Tigers 1. AUS Quarter-finals.

As I watched the game this afternoon, the first thing that came to mind was Charity Walls comments during the Men’s game 3 at SMU. Shaun McKenzie asked her about her thoughts on their up coming playoff game vs.Dalhousie. Charity didn’t hesitate, we are going to beat them. Her confidence was so immense that it couldn’t help but hit you. I think it almost knocked poor Shaun over. Well folks, it was well founded and Charity backed it up by having a 2 point game. The Tommies avenged last years heart breaking 3 O/T loss to Dal in the playoffs, then some.

The game never seemed to be in doubt as the Tommies rolled to victory. Ashley Duguay and Hannah Muir each had 2 goals, with singles going to Matthews, Sollows, Ernst, and Storas. The Ladies had period leads of 4 - 1, 7 -1, and your final 8 -1. 1st team All-star Emily Hobbs faced 29 shots for the win. CIS BOX SCORE. DG ARTICLE. TT ARTICLE Men’s

Earlier in the day it was the SMU Huskies defeating the UNB Squirrels 4 -2. This sets up a SMU vs. UdeM semi-final and #1 ST FX vs. the Tommies at 4 PM tomorrow afternoon. GOOD LUCK LADIES, GO GET ‘EM.

February 28th, 2007. Tommies Fall “Short” at Moncton.
Tommies 3 - Aigles Bleus 4. Game 1 AUS Semi-finals.

Two shorthanded goals by Moncton ended up being the difference between a big win and a tough loss. The final score may not be in our favour but the positives to be taken from this game are many. Some great penalty killing, strong play on the puck, and great goaltending by Matt Davis are a just a few.

The Tommies came out hard in the first period but were unable to score a goal. Moncton scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of the period to hold the advantage going into the next period.

Coach Eagles must have rallied the troops during the intermission as Justin Bowers (McCutcheon, Bateman) scored at 1:04 to cut the lead to 1. Moncton regained the 2 goal cushion shorthanded when Matt Davis misplayed the puck, recovered to make a miraculous save, only to have it rebound to a Blue Eagle, who promptly buried it into the net. Ian Turner cut the lead on the PP not long after from Miguel Delisle and Justin Bowers. Matt Davis held the margin by making an outstanding save shortly thereafter. The Tommies got another PP opportunity and Jeff Bateman broke in alone, stopped up and passed to a streaking Miguel Delisle for a pretty tying goal. Turner with the other assist.

With the game tied early in the third the Tommies found themselves on the PP but they lost the puck at the point and Moncton raced in on a golden break to score. This ended up being the winning goal but the Tommies didn’t quit. With the Tommies down 2 men, for over 2 minutes late in third, they were able to keep Moncton at bay. Kyle McAllister just missed tying the game after he came out of the box but it wasn’t in the cards and he just missed. Matt Davis was solid and stopped 41 of 45 shots. Next game is Friday night 7 PM in Moncton and will be live on 96.5 JOY FM. DG STORY

The Lady Tommies begin their playoffs tomorrow at 3:30 PM vs, Dalhousie at the LBR.
They will be back stopped by their AUS 1st team all-star Emily Hobbs. Congrats to Emily and LET’s GO TOMMIES!! DG Article.

HCH AUS Women’s report.

February 25th, 2007. Huskies “Bowers” Out to Tommies.
Tommies 7 - Huskies 6. Game 3 AUS Quarter Finals.

Good bye Halifax, hello Moncton! If Tommie fans needed reminding there is an old saying “All good things to those who wait,” or as Guns N’ Roses sang “Patience”. Either way the Tommies pulled out a huge win late in the third period against a resilient Huskies team to win the best of three AUS quarter final 2 games to 1.

In a back and forth battle all night SMU was on the board first 29 seconds into opening period. The lead was short lived as Kyle McAllister (Delisle, Bell) tied it less than 2 minutes later. Justin McCutcheon, unassisted, gave STU their first lead at 15:36 shorthanded. SMU rallied and netted 2 before the period was over to take back the lead going to the intermission.

In the second frame, the Huskies couldn’t wait to hit the ice and took a 2 goal lead 49 seconds in while they were shorthanded. This is where Kyle McAllister’s words came to mind, “You've got to work hard every night in this league to win. But guys who are able to step up and guys who aren't expected to score bury some chances that we're getting." Cue Aaron Lobb. After taking 2 penalties in the first, he shows up in the second and scores 2 goals to tie the game at 4. The first one from Chris Cook and his second goal from Bowers and Butera. Miguel Delisle staked the Tommies to another one goal lead on the PP from Bateman and McAllister at 13:02. Again, before the period is done, St Mary’s comes back to tie the game at 5 with under 3 minutes to go.

While the Huskies didn’t score in the first minute this time, they did score to take a 6 to 5 lead with 12 minutes to play. Rally the Tommies again. This time Paul Giallonardo (box score says McAllister) ties it with a blast from the point with 8 minutes left. Box score says McAllister from Butera and Delisle but Sean MacKenzie of JOY FM says it was Paul from Big Mac. Sounds good to me.

Time for the late game heroics and up pops the rookie Justin Bowers. Justion deflected the Anthony Butera shot past the SMU goalie at 18:47 to push the Tommies through, as he also got the game winning goal in game one. His Killer B line mate Jeff Bateman got the other assist. WOW!!! Now it was up to the defence and Matt Davis to close the door and keep the dogs out. That’s exactly what happened to end the see-saw game. Matt made 26 saves for the win. Jeff Bateman, Miguel Delisle, and the Captain all added 3 point on the night. Next game is probably going to be Wednesday in Moncton. Just a quick FYI, the game was never in doubt. I updated the broadcast/schedule page last night and put Moncton next on the list!!
LET’S GO TOMMIES ! ! !! ! That’s it for tonight. CIS BOX. DG.

February 24th, 2007. Tommies Shot Down by Moncton.
Tommies 3 - Aigles Bleues 4.

In the final game of the regular season the Tommies took the Nationally ranked Moncton team to a shoot out. While the game may not have been important in the standing to STU, a good game against Les Aigles would by a moral booster heading to the playoffs.

The first period was scoreless but the Tommies got the ball rolling late in the second when Michelle Goguen fired the point shot past the screened Moncton goalie, converting on the Caroline Hammerheim pass. Before the period was over U de M tied it up.

In the third things got interesting. Karlee Shields (Muir) potted a goal off the post from a virtually impossible angle to regain the lead. Penalty trouble gave Moncton a chance to tie the game before things went from bad to worse. With 7:04 to go, Ashley Duguay gets a roughing call and runs into another player heading to the bench. BAM, out of no where’s she gets assessed a 5 minute major for cross checking. Thus the Tommies have to play out the game shorthanded. Moncton scores on the lengthy PP to take their first lead and have the opportunity to protect it one women up for the rest of the game. Enter Caroline Hammerhiem. Down 1 goal, shorthanded, the Tommies get the puck deep into the opposing zone off the face off. Sweet Caroline digs in, intercepts the poor clearing attempt and buries the goal to tie the game shorthanded. Can you say “Clutch”? The penalty kill held and Emily Hobbs, as usual, held the fort through the rest of the third and overtime for a hard earned point. In the shoot out Moncton converted on both chances to collect the win. The Tommies will now come home to host the AUS championship next week and will face the Dalhousie Tigers at 3:30 PM on Thursday. GO TOMMIES!

February 23rd, 2007. Overtime Forces Game 3.
Tommies 4 - Huskies 5. OT Game 2 AUS Quarter Finals.

Well folks its back to Halifax on Sunday for game 3. The Tommies played a tough game this evening but an early overtime marker by St. Mary’s forced this series to the limit.

It was SMU on the board first half way through the opening period but Chris Cook (Giallonardo, Bateman) tied it on the PP at the 15:00 minute mark. With the period winding down Ian Turner (Bowers, Bell) put the Tommies ahead by one at 19:39.

You could tell St. Mary’s was desperate and they came out hard in the 2nd. They penned the Tommies up for extended periods in their own zone and STU’s inability to clear the puck cost them. The Huskies scored early in the second on the PP and took the lead at 14:43. St. Thomas stormed right back as Jeff Bateman, from in close, passed over to a wide open Justin McCutcheon who buried it in the yawning cage. Justin Bowers got the other assist.

In the third SMU scored at 14:54 to take another lead but again STU stormed right back and scored 15 seconds later. Justin Roy from Kyle Gailey and Chris Cook forced overtime. In OT, the Huskies pushed the puck into STU’s end right off the face off and then fought hard behind the net. The puck eventually squirted right out to a wide open Scott Hotham, who promptly deposited the gift top shelf past a helpless Matt Davis. With that SMU forces game 3 back in Halifax, Sunday at 8 PM. The game will be live on 96.5 JOY FM as the Tommies fight for their playoff lives. DG Article

February 22nd, 2007. Tommies Shut out Squirrels.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 0.

It is a good night any time you can shut out your cross town rivals and tonight was a good one. Emily Hobbs made 35 saves and Amy McLennan’s unassisted goal in the first minute was enough to down the Squirrels.

The Tommies kept the momentum going in the second period when Caroline Hammerhiem scored shorthanded 25 seconds into the second period. The young Swede has wheels galore and can really put the peddle to the medal. Hannah Muir rounded out the scoring mid way through the 2nd frame with assists to Nussbaum and Thompson. The Squirrels tried in vain to get back into the game in the third but Emily Hobbs shut the door. The Ladies head to Moncton to play their final game of the 2006-07 regular season. The Tommies will finish in 4th place and will finish with at least a .500 record.

February 21st, 2007. Big Win For Tommies.
Tommies 5 - Huskies 3. Game 1 AUS Quarter Finals.

Game #1 of the AUS playoffs started off on the right foot for the Green and Gold. With a 4 point night by Jeff Bateman, the return of rear guard Ryan Card, and outstanding relief goaltending by Matt Davis the Tommies head home Friday night with a 1 game lead.

St. Thomas started the scoring early in the first when Miguel Delisle rushed in on a short handed 2 on 1 with Jeff Bateman and converted. Ryan Card earned the other assist. Shortly thereafter Chris Cook laid a big hit on a SMU D-man to set a physical tone. The Huskies, in a recurring theme all evening, crashed the net to tie the game and take out starting goaltender Aaron Molnar. Matt Davis was called into action. Before the 1st ended Ian Turner clinked one of the cross bar.

Early in the 2nd period Miguel Delisle hit the goal post only to have St Mary’s grab the puck, bring it all the way back to the Tommies end, and score. Justin McCutcheon (Bateman, Bowers) tied it up just before the 10 minute mark. A minute later STU regained the lead on the PP when Kyle McAllister (Bowers, Turner) converted. Justin Bowers (Turner, Bateman) scored on a huge effort when he dove to connect on the Ian Turner pass that was just ahead of him. Jeff Bateman, with his fourth point of the night, rounded out the scoring for STU with just over a minute to go in the period from McCutcheon and Giallonardo.

The Huskies scored in the third by crashing into the Tommies goalie again but they would get no closer. SMU fired 32 shots at Molnar and Davis. Molnar’s injury was reported to be lower body. No word on his condition. This win marks the first time the Tommies have won a game, since the arrival of
St. Nick Theriault in 2004-05, when he is not in the line-up. STU was a combined 0 - 8 over 3 seasons with out St. Nick and had been outscored 41 to 14 in those games. Tonight’s win was a good way to break that streak but it emphasized how other teams play the Tommies without St Nick to keep them honest. So no matter what opposing coaches say and I certainly don’t care what Squirrel fans say, St. Nick delivered. Tonight other players stepped forward to carry the presents. GREAT JOB!

February 19th, 2007. Tommies Begin Play-off Quest on Wednesday.

UPDATE: DG ARTICLE. GOOD LUCK IN HALIFAX! GO TOMMIES!

The second season begins Wednesday night in Halifax for the Tommies and our battle worn troops will march against the SMU Huskies in a best of three series. It will certainly test the teams physical and mental endurance as many of STU’s key players will be out due to injury.

While the season series between the two teams favoured the Tommies 3 games to 1, we all know the regular season can be thrown right out the window. That being said, it was St Mary’s who knocked STU out last year in the playoffs, after they had amassed a 3-0-1 record in the regular season. Draw on the positives.

In today’s edition (Feb. 19th) of the Daily Gleaner, Kyle McAllister was quoted as saying

"It's going to take guys realizing that it's not just going to take hard work, it's going to take guys who have been stuck in a role all year who are going to have to take on a new role. We're working hard, but hard work isn't all that's going to win in the playoffs. Hard work is a given. You've got to work hard every night in this league to win. But guys who are able to step up and guys who aren't expected to score bury some chances that we're getting."

Bang on Kyle. Step up and move on. One shift, one period, one game, one series at a time. Relentless on the puck with no surrender. Nobody said it was easy but nothing worth fighting for is. Fight on Tommies, Fight on.

Game time on Wednesday night is 7 PM and the game will be live on 96.5 JOY FM. Friday’s home game will be at 8:00 PM. Tickets will not go on sale until 6:30 PM at the LBR box office the night of the game. DG Article.

February 17th, 2007. Tommies Score Late, Beat Tigers.
Tommies 4 - Tigers 3.

The Lady Tommies added a little breathing room between themselves and Dalhousie for 4th place in the AUS this afternoon at the LBR. It took a late goal to do it but STU finds themselves 3 points up on Dalhousie with 2 games to go, plus a playoff birth, plus no lower in the standings than 5th. What this all means is STU will, more than likely, be playing Dal. in the playoffs Thursday, March 1st at the LBR.

In this afternoon’s game, it was the Tigers who took a 2 goal lead deep into the second period before the Tommies woke up. At 18:30, Hannah Muir squeaked one by the the Dal. goalie with assists to Duguay and Ernst. Then, just over a minute later, and time running out on the clock, the Tommies tied it on the PP when Kelley Hogg floated one past the Tiger keeper. Assist to Edison and Boudreau.

The Ladies kept coming in the 3rd when Caroline Hammerheim from Duguay and Gogren scored one on a carry over penalty from the second at 1:31. It was their first lead but it dissolved when the Tigers tied it on the PP just over half way through the 3rd. The heroin on this night was rookie Shana Noseworthy who scored with just over a minute and a half to play. Assists to Storas and Walls. Emily Hobbs got the win facing 32 pucks. Next game for the Tommies is next Thursday night against the Squirrels at the LBR. 7 PM start.

In men’s action, the Tommies were bombed by Moncton 8 to 1. Scoring for the Tommies in the 3rd period was Thatcher Bell from Butera and McAllister. Aaron Molnar and Matt Davis shared the net this evening. STU was without the services of St. Nick Theriault, Matt Seymour, Ryan Card, Aaron Lobb, and lost Jean Bourbeau in the first period. The Tommies head to Halifax on Wednesday night for Game 1 of their quarter final match up against St. Mary’s. The next home game is Saturday night at the LBR.

February 16th, 2007. Tommies Lose Round 4.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 5.

It was a tough night all the way around for the Tommies. The Men went up the hill to fight the Squirrels and the Ladies were down the hill fighting the X-women. Both games had less than positive results.

At the AUC the Tommies raced out to a 2 to 0 lead in the first period but in the second period the Squirrels woke up and bombed STU with all 5 goals. The third period was a bust for the Tommies and lacked intensity. Scoring for STU were Jean Bourbeau (Butera and Gailey), Ian Turner (McAllister) and Jeff Bateman (Bourbeau and Turner). Aaron Molnar made some great saves in net this evening and faced 33 shots. All the playoff positions have been determined now and here is the match ups. Acadia will play St FX, STU will play SMU, while UNB and Moncton will receive the first round byes. I believe the Tommies will be in Halifax on Tuesday night to start the playoffs.

In Ladies action, the Tommies were downed by first place St FX 4 -1. Scoring the lone goal for STU in the second period was Nicole Ernst from Waite and Shields. Lindsay Coghlan made 40 saves in the loss. The Tommies remain in 4th spot as Dalhousie lost to PEI 1 – 0. The Tigers will be in town tomorrow afternoon with the game beginning at 3 PM. The men play Moncton at 7 PM and it will be live on 96.5 JOY FM. Men’s & Women’s DG Stories

February 14th, 2007. Tommie Christened “St. Nick”.

Last week UNB’s paper, “The Brunswickan,” had a little article in their sports section and the title was “STU player a classic hockey villain”. I’m not going to get into a battle with the Squirrel newspaper but needless to say I found it….annoying at best. The jest of the article was Nick Theriault was bad and the poor Squirrels had to deal with this horrible Tommie. They called him more than a few names and told us how much Squirrel fans hate him. It was completely one sided, as one might expect an opposition media source to be. So we are on the other side, so think about this.

Is there not an old saying that goes “It is better to give than to receive”? If that is the case than it may be appropriate to look at Nick Theriault from a Tommies point of view. Let’s think about this for a minute. What does Nick do best, he gives. He gives great hits, he gives great rushes, he gives Tommies fans great joy, and he gives opposing teams something to think about. How about this, from now on he will only be referred to as “Saint Nick” because he is always giving. Perhaps we should see about getting him canonized and make the title official?

Let the Squirrels boo and chant the ever so original “Tearrr e ooo”. I wonder who thought that one up anyways? Brilliant. I bet you he loves it though. I guess it is important to say that Tommie fans stick up for their own. Don’t listen to the poisonous rants coming from the other side of the hill. In the end I truly hope that St. Nick gets an opportunity to get one last crack at the Squirrels before his AUS career is complete. Here’s to the Tommies St. Nick! GO TOMMIES!!

UPDATE: DG Article: Shana has nose for the net.

February 10th, 2007. Tommies A-Line Swamp Axemen.
Tommies 6 - Axemen 2.

Well hello Miguel Delisle, it is a pleasure doing business with you and your friends Mr Cook and Mr McAllister. What else can you say when the A-line gets 13 points combined? 2 goals and 3 assists for Miguel, a goal and 3 assists for Chris, and a goal and 3 assists for Kyle. Super duper.

The Tommies held period advantages of 3 -1 after one, 5 – 1 after two, and your final 6-2. Also scoring tonight was Anthony Butera with his first of the season and the OKB’s Justin Bowers. Acadia got into penalty trouble early and fell behind 3 to 0. It would be the Tommies turn next to feel the wrath of the Official but the only damage came late in the first on a 2 man disadvantage and late in the third when the game was out of reach.

Miguel looked really good tonight and his hard work and effort was rewarded. He was solid on the PP but was equally impressive on the PK and really worked his butt off. Aaron Molnar looked sharp in net and made 34 saves for the win. Acadia really peppered him in the third with 21 shots. Many of those had Aaron coming up large. Next game for the men is next Friday against the Squirrels in the 15th Annual Mark Jeffery Memorial game. In lady’s action this afternoon, the Tommies took care of PEI 4 to 1. Scoring for STU was Karlee Shields with 2, Kelly Mathews, and Rebekah Thompson. Lindsay Coghlan made 18 saves for the win. The Tommies solidify their hold on a playoff birth as MT A. lost to St Mary’s. They leap frog Dalhousie for 4th in the league with the Tigers having a game in hand and remain 4 points up on the Squirrels who kept pace with an impressive win over first place Moncton. Next game for STU is at home on the 16th against ST FX.

February 9th, 2007. Tommies Out Bite Huskies.
Tommies 6 - Huskies 4.

It was a battle between two Saint’s tonight at the LBR and it was the Tommies who got the win. A couple of names that haven’t been on the score sheet that often this year and a reuniting of the OKB’s (Original Killer B’s) propelled STU to their second win in a row and a clinched playoff birth. Not to mention a few points closer to a better playoff seeding.

On this night, SMU scored first on the PP but the Tommies came right back with a goal by the OKB’s Jeff Bateman from linemates Bourbeau and Bowers. Miguel Delisle (Bowers, Turner) put the Tommies ahead by a goal heading into the second.

SMU tied it half way through the second but Aaron Lobb, with his second of the season, was able to knock one home on a goal mouth scramble after Anthony Butera carried the puck from the board to the front of the net. Sean Turner had the other assist. SMU rallied again and scored to knot the game at 3 before the period ended. The Huskies scored in the third to take a 4 – 3 lead. Aaron Lobb then went from being a zero, to being a hero. Aaron took a high sticking penalty and while he was in the box Justin McCutcheon got caught for hooking with just under a minute left in the other penalty. The Tommies fought off the 5 on 3 and when Aaron stepped out of the box, he followed the play into the St Mary’s zone and riffled a one timer, short handed, past the opposition goalie.

The goal seemed to pump up the crowd a bit and with just over 4 minutes remaining the OCB’s, Bateman and Bowers, feed Ian Turner who unleashed a bullet that went right by the SMU tender. Miguel Delisle with #2 on the night salted the game away late with an empty netter and the unselfish assist to Kyle McAllister. Aaron Molnar got the win in nets and faced 31 shots, including a few big stops in the third. Great finish gents. DG STORY..

February 8th, 2007. Tommies Tame Doe Squirrels.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 1.

A “Battle of the Hill” always adds to a hockey game but tonight’s STU/UNB contest had a little more on the line. Heading into crunch time for a playoff spot in the AUS means that any win is huge but playing your rival, who happens to be 2 points behind you in the standings, makes it even larger. The Lady Tommies didn’t disappoint and now sit 4 points up on UNB for fifth. Mt. Allison remains 1 point behind UNB for the final playoff spot.

The Tommies started the scoring in the second when Karlee Shields converted a Marianne Waite shot past UNB’s goalie. The Doe Squirrels answered back in the third to tie but the Ladies took over from there. Shana Noseworthy from Ashley Duguay scored the game winner with less than six minutes to go in the period. It was a power play marker. Karlee Shields scored her 2nd of the night from Amy MacLennan and Nicole Ernst to give the home side a little breathing room. Emily Hobbs played great in net and stopped 23 shots. The Tommies out shot the Squirrels 45 -24. DG Story.

February 4th, 2007. Tommies Climb Over Mt. Allison
Tommies 4 - Mounties 1.

UPDATE: DG STORY - Karlee Shields

A very successful weekend indeed for the Lady Tommies and it is coming at the right time. This afternoon the Tommies seized their opportunities and rolled through Sackville on their way back to Fredericton. Charity Walls started the scoring in the 1st period unassisted. In the second period the Ladies started pulling away with 2 goals, one unassisted by Karlee Shields and the other by Sarah Sollows from Shana Noseworthy.

In the third period the Tommies salted it away early when Malin Storas from Noseworthy and Duguay scored to make it 4 to 0. Emily Hobbs shut out bid was foiled with less than 40 seconds to play. In all Emily stopped 26 pucks for the win. STU takes a 2 point lead over the Doe Squirrels for 5th in the standings and will take on their arch rivals Thursday evening 7 PM at the LBR. BE THERE!!

February 3rd, 2007. Tommies Find Way to Win at Acadia.
Tommies 3 - Axemen 2.

Things started off well again tonight for the Tommies but a late 2nd period melt down let Acadia back in the game. Good teams respond and that’s exactly what St. Thomas did, respond. With the threat of falling 2 games below the .500 mark, plus being tied for the last playoff spot with the Axemen, the Tommies found a way to win.

STU scored first on a nice goal by Jean Bourbeau from McCutcheon and Turner. The one goal lead held up until late in the second period when Acadia rattled off 2 goals, including one with 3 seconds left in the period. That could have been the turning point in the entire season right there. Either the team found a way to move forward or remain stuck in neutral. Forward would be the direction in the third.

With the team on the man advantage Paul Giallonardo picked a great time to get his first of the season from Bateman and McAllister. The game appeared destined for overtime but the Tommies were relentless in their attack and scored with less than 2 minutes to play. Justin McCutcheon from McAllister and Butera put the Tommies back into the win column. Acadia did press in the final 30 seconds but could not solve Aaron Molnar when they needed to. He played a great game in net and the team really responded. Next game for the Tommies is next Friday night against SMU at the LBR. Daily Gleaner Article.

In AUS women’s action, the Tommies gained an important, hard fought, point in Halifax. The Ladies fought the Huskies to a 2 -2 tie through regulation and overtime but lost in the shootout. Scoring for the Tommies was Shana Noseworthy from Sarah Sollows and Ashley Duguay at 3:55 of the second period on the PP. Hanah Muir from Nicole Ernst and Charity Walls at 10:12 pushed the ladies ahead 2 to 1. SMU tied it up before the second period was over. Liette Arseneault held the fort and faced 54 shots in the shootout loss.

February 2nd, 2007. Huskies Outlast Tommies.
Tommies 2 - Huskies 3.

The Tommies came out strong and hard in the 1st but the Huskies showed patience and came back to win. Matt Seymour started the scoring at 28 seconds, when Nick Theriault held the puck in at the blue line, fired the shot, and Matt picked up the rebound. McCutcheon got the other assist. Justin McCutcheon put the Tommies up by 2 shorthanded unassisted 6 minutes later. St. Mary’s scored 2 to tie the game before the first was over.

The Huskies scored the only goal in the second period to take the lead heading into the third. STU thought they had tied the game half way through the 3rd when they raced in on a 3 on 1. The goal judge turned on the light, the ref signaled a goal but the linesman waved it off. No consultation with the goal judge and the tying goal was called back. A last gasp effort in the final seconds proved futile for the Tommies. Matt Davis took the loss in net on this night. St. Thomas travels to Acadia tomorrow night to play the Axemen at 7:30 PM, live on 96.5 JOY FM.

January 31st, 2007. Squirrels Rain on Tommies Parade.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 4. LCMG.

The 13th annual Lou Chabot Memorial game didn’t quite go as scripted tonight at the LBR. Of course the script is suppose to read Tommies Win and Squirrels...well quite frankly you can add your own verb in there, depending on the emotion you are feeling. Mine would be fall, die, spontaneously combust. They all fit.

On this night it was the Tommies on the wrong side of a 4 -3 game. The Squirrels started the scoring on the PP in the first period. This was shortly after Nick Theriault made a gorgeous save to keep the game scoreless, at that point, and help out Aaron Molnar. Nick just threw himself in front of the puck to keep it out. That is the dedication that will win you championships. Sometimes you have to pay the price and it may not pay off immediately but it will. It was Nick who tied the game in the second period on the PP when a lose puck bounced out to him and he shot it through the Squirrel netminder. UNB scored the next two goals but the Killer B’s replied when Jeff Bateman from Bowers and Bell shrunk the lead heading to the third.

The Tommies tied the game at 12:05 when Jeff Bateman scored his second of the night from Justin Bowers. UNB got their 4th goal with less than 6 minutes remaining on one that Aaron Molnar would love to have back. On a weak shot from the side of the net the puck appeared to deflect off something, or just plain elude Aaron and rolled in the net. The sad part of the story was the Tommies inability to capitalize on their power plays late in the third, including a 1:30 five on three. The Tommies out shot UNB 38 - 22.

Before the game started, a standing ovation was given to the 8 players from both teams that brought back gold from the University Games in Torino, Italy. Congratulations to all of you. It was also a pleasure to see Mrs Chabot drop the ceremonial first puck. She comes every year from Ottawa to be part of the dedication to Lou. Thank you. DG STORY

January 28th, 2007. Lou Chabot Memorial.

It is with the utmost of respect to Louis Chabot, his family, and friends that we present an on-line memorial to his memory. On Wednesday January 31st, 2007 the 13th annual Lou Chabot Memorial Game will be held in his honour at the LBR. Many of us did not know this young man and did not even know what he looked like. Hopefully now people can put his face with his name and go back to see why he is held in such high regard to Tommies and fans. We would also like to give a huge thank you to Lou’s brother Luc and Mom, Pauline, for their assistance and information. To everyone else who contributed, THANK YOU, I know that Lou and his family appreciate it. Go Tommies!

Tommies 1 - X-men 2.

The Tommies showed a lot of heart and determination tonight at the LBR but were on the wrong side of a 2-1 loss. STU fought off and extended 5 on 3 PK in the first to keep the score tied going to the second. X was first on the board but the Tommies replied on the PP when Justin Bowers, from his Killer B linemates Bell and Bateman, knotted the game at one. However the tie was short lived as X picked a corner before the period ended.

The Tommies were unable to get the tying goal in the third. A few near misses in the final minute certainly sent chills down the ST FX bench but there was no saving grace on this night for the Tommies. Matt Davis took the loss in net. Despite the loss the Tommies looked more organized than a week ago against Dalhousie. While the whole team but in a valiant effort, special note was taken of the ice time Nick Theriault put in and the offense pressure the Killer B line was able to generate. Looking forward to the Lou Chabot game when our triumphant Team Canada members return from Italy.

Team Canada heads into the medal round undefeated at the University games in Torino, Italy. Kyle McAllister scored Canada’s second goal early in the first on the PP. Russia needed two third period goals, one on the power play with less than 5 minutes left, to tie the game. Even though Canada and Russia both have 7 points in the standings, Canada will finish first in Pool B based on goals for/against. The Canadians have 29 compared to Russia’s 19. January 21st, 2007. Tommies Out Match Mounties.
Tommies 4 - Mounties 3.

This afternoon’s game with Mt Allison was literally a four point affair and the team that came out on top would be closer to a playoff birth. After a tough game yesterday afternoon the Ladies pulled together and came up with a huge team effort. Sarah Sollows (Goguen Assist) started the scoring just before the 10 minute of the first period on the power play. Shortly after Mt A. tied the scored. They would take the lead in the second period short handed with what proved to be the only goal of the period. The Tommies headed to the third down a goal and something had to give.

The Ladies obviously found something between periods and came out gunning. They rattled off 3 straight tallies and were up 4 - 2 with 8 minutes to play. Scoring for STU were Amy MacLennan (Thompson), Marianne Waite pp (Goguen), and Lucrece Nussbaum pp (Goguen). With five minutes left the Mounties scored a PP goal but the Tommies were up to the task and Emily Hobbs shut them down. The whole team deserves a big pat on the back. WELL DONE!! With the win the Tommies leap frog the Squirrels and find themselves in fifth, 1 point up on UNB and 2 on MT A. A quick shout out to John Sheilds, HAPPY BIRTHDAY from everyone here back east! We hope your birthday wishes comes true!

January 20th, 2007. Tough Times Continue for Tommies.
Tommies 4 - Tigers 6.

Talk about your tough nights, tonight was one of those for the Tommies. Three first period goals by Dalhousie, the first on a neutral zone turnover leading to a breakaway, the second a short handed marker and the third a PP goal, put STU in a hole they would never recover from. With two defensemen in Torino playing for Team Canada and Ryan Card leaving the game early in the first with an injury, the Tommies usually stellar defence was left with only 3 regulars. Justin Roy and Jean Bourbeau came back to play D and try to fill some big skates.

As mentioned Dalhousie came out and scored three quick ones in the first. It was apparent that the Tigers needed this win too and jumping on the Tommies early was part on the game plan. Kudos to them for executing but through it all the Tommies kept coming. In the second frame Dal scored early to increase the lead to 4 – 0. Matt Davis was pulled and Guillaume Miszczak, in his first regular season appearance, came on in relief. It seemed to work as STU came “ringing” back with Thatcher Bell scoring a natural hat trick. Thatcher had two helpers from Justin Bowers and singles from Joel Leitner, Nick Theriault, Miguel Delisle, and Jeff Bateman. The Tommies were down 1 going into the third and more or less owned the second period.

In the third period the Tommies looked like they were going to tie it early but the fourth goal proved elusive. A reprieve of sorts or perhaps a second chance was given when Dalhousie appeared to have scored but the goal was waved off because they had too many men on the ice. It proved to be irrelevant as a tired Tommies team took a few to many penalties and the Tigers capitalized twice including a nice shot that just snuck in under the cross bar and a bang bang play on a five on three advantage. Matt Seymour from Bateman and Leitner would pot one on a pretty shot with under a minute to play to end the scoring. Final shots on goal were 37- 30 for STU.

In AUS women’s action, the Tommies were dumped by St Mary’s 5 to 1. Scoring late in the third was Michelle Goguen from Nussbaum and Hammerheim on the PP. Lindsay Coghlan had a strong game in net stopping many quality SMU shots. The Ladies play tomorrow afternoon at 3 PM against Mt Allison. This is a big game for the Tommies so come out and cheer them on. Team Canada also plays tomorrow in Turin against Korea.

January 18th, 2007. Team Canada Blanks Americans 5 to 0.

GO CANADA. Update: Tommies News 01/19/07.

January 13th, 2007. No Luck in Moncton.
Tommies 4 - Aigles Bleus 7.

U de M raced out of the gate and took a 2 goal lead in the first and the Tommies could not fight all the way back. It seemed every time STU scored a goal, Moncton would come right back and score. With the win tonight the Aigles Bleus clinch a playoff birth, as neither Acadia or PEI can make up the spread.

Moncton was up 2 - 0 by the 10 minute mark of the first period before Kyle McAllister scored one on the PP to shrink the lead. Just over a minute later U de M regained the 2 goal cushion. In the second period Moncton scored first to increase the lead but Miguel Delisle closed the gap on the PP only to have U de M widen it again shortly there after.

The third period saw the Tommies get close again when Justin Bowers scored on the PP 2 minutes in. STU pressed in the early going before stupid penalties got them 2 men down and eventually, because of that, 3 goals behind. Chris Cook cut the lead to 6 - 4 on the PP but Moncton came right back and salted it away. Aaron Molnar took the loss and faced 36 Moncton shots. Kyle McAllister paced the Tommies with 3 points and Miguel Delisle had 2 assists. The next game is a week from tonight against Dalhousie.

In AUS ladies action this afternoon the Tommies were downed by visiting Moncton. Scoring for STU was Shana Noseworthy and Nicole Ernst. It took a third period goal for Moncton to pull out the win. Emily Hobbs face 34 shots in the loss.

January 12th, 2007. It’s Over, Tommies Win.
Tommies 7 - Panthers 2.

In a game where the Tommies had to win, they took it up a notch and dominated. The Panthers were able to keep it close until the first intermission and then STU began to light it up. A really big boost which we hope can propel the team up the play-off standings.

Captain McAllister got the Tommies on the board with a short handed tally mid way through the first. He now leads the AUS with three. Aaron Molnar made a couple of key saves to keep the Panthers off the board. In the second frame the goals came early and often. The Tommies jumped out to a 4 to 0 lead before UPEI got one back but STU immediately replied to regain the four goal cushion. Scoring in the second period were Matt Seymour, Justin Bowers with 2, and McAllister with his 2nd.

The Panthers cut the lead to three again early in the third but the Tommies replied with 2 more to close it out. Jean Bourbeau with a beauty and Justin Roy rounded out the scoring. Jeff Bateman had 3 helpers, while Thatcher Bell and Nick Theriault added 2 apiece. Aaron Molnar made 25 saves for the win. The Tommies fired 50 shots at the UPEI net.

With the win the Tommies magic number falls to 5 games for a play-off birth but more importantly gives them 2 points to keep up with the teams above them in the standings. The Tommies head to Moncton tomorrow night to take on the Aigles Bleus at the Moncton Coliseum. Game time is 7 PM and can be heard live on 96.5 JOY FM. The Ladies start their second half tomorrow afternoon at 3 PM against Moncton. Good luck to both teams and GO TOMMIES GO!!! DG & T&T Article

January 11th, 2007. Tommies Look to End Funk.

Tomorrow evenings game against the UPEI Panthers, 7 PM at the LBR, figures to be a big one for the Tommies. With their magic number sitting at 7 for both Acadia and UPEI, the game represents 4 points in the standings for STU. More importantly a win gets them back in the hunt for a first round bye in this year’s playoffs or better seeding going into the post season. As usual, the game can be heard live on

January 6th, 2007. Tigers Sneak By Tommies.
Tommies 5 - Tigers 6.

Tough times continue for STU with a disappointing loss to last place Dalhousie. The Tigers scored 2 late third period goals to eek out their second win of the season. A weak first period for STU resulted in 3 goals for the Tigers. Kyle McAllister replied with a short handed marker from Miguel Delisle to keep it close.

Aaron Molnar replaced Matt Davis in net at the start of the second period. The move seemed to work as the Tommies scored 4 times in the second period including 2 goals from Justin Bowers and 2 from Jeff Bateman. The team went into the third with a 5 - 4 lead.

STU had several near misses in the third period but could not find the back of the net for an insurance goal. They fought off a 2 man disadvantage at the 14 minute mark before the Tigers reeled off 2 straight even strength goals to drive a dagger in the Tommies hopes of ending their losing streak. The Tommies will be at home next Friday night to square off against PEI. Come out and support your Tommies. BOX SCORE

January 5th, 2007. Tommies Fall in Antigonish.
Tommies 2 - X-Men 5.

The Tommies fell in Antigonish tonight when X scored 3 third period goals including an empty netter. The ST FX goalie played well through the third and kept STU at bay. The team played a pretty good game throughout but a few defensive lapses cost them dearly.

The first period was scoreless but only because the PK unit was playing at it’s finest including a minute and a half 5 on 3. The second period started of well when Chris Cook from Ian Turner and Anthony Butera got the first goal early on the power play. The X-men scored the next 2 and took the one goal lead into the 3rd.

The Tommies tied the game early in the third when Chris Cook got his second goal of the night from Kyle McAllister and Jeff Bateman. The rest of the game was owned by STFX and they cruised to the 5 to 2 win. Aaron Molnar took the loss in net and stopped 22 pucks. Tomorrow evening the Tommies will be in Halifax to play the Dal. Tigers and more importantly Nick Theriault and Miguel Delisle will be back in the line up. After hearing Miguel in the first intermission JOY FM interview, look for him to be gunning tomorrow night.

Tommies 1 - Concordia 4. (Exhibition)

Don’t let the score fool you, the Tommies were in this one all the way. A penalty filled first period, including 2 five on three disadvantages leading to 2 goals, were the ultimate undoing of the team on this night. The Ladies were out shot 16 to 8 in the first but nine shots were on the PP.

The Tommies came back hard in the second out shooting the Stingers 11 - 5 but Concordia scored the only goal to make it 3 - zip. STU got on the board at the 10 minute mark of the 3rd when Marlin Storas fired a nice pass to Ashley Duguay for the goal. This was as close as they would get. The Tommies out shot Concordia 25-24 and Emily Hobbs took the loss. The new line of Boudreau, Matthews, and Ernst looked really good in their debut, as did the line of Shields, MacLennan, and Storas. The Ladies play the Carleton Ravens at 12:30 PM (EST) on Saturday. BOX SCORE

Lucrece Nussbaum is still in Europe playing for Switzerland at the Air Canada Cup being held in Germany. Hopefully she has a great tournament and gets picked to represent her country at the World Championship later this year.

Coach Eagles will not be behind the bench this evening in Antigonish. He received an automatic one game suspension for “not controling his players” after the Squirrel game at the Pete Kelly Cup.

Happy New Year to everyone. The Tommies are back in AUS action this weekend with two games in Nova Scotia. On Friday night the Tommies take on ST FX, who are only 2 points behind STU with a game in hand. The team will be without the services of Miguel Delisle and Nick Theriault both of whom will be sitting out the second game of their 2 game suspensions. However, both will be eligible to play against Dalhousie on Saturday night in Halifax. Both games are 7 PM starts and can be heard live on

Meanwhile the Ladies travel to Montreal to participate in the Theresa Humes Tournament. This should be a great experience for STU as there will be some top notch Women’s Hockey Teams involved in this tournament. The Tommies start at 7 PM (EST) Friday Jan. 5th against host Concordia. Other teams playing are McGill, U of Toronto, Queen’s, Wilfred Laurier, U of Ottawa, and Carleton. Should be some great hockey. GO TOMMIES! THERESA HUMES TOURNAMENT PAGE.

December 31st, 2006. Squirrels Trump Tommies in OT.
Pete Kelly Cup Tommies 2 - Squirrels 3 OT.

Nothing better than a Battle of the Hill to end the year off right. This afternoon at the Aiken Centre was no exception, with a chippy first two periods of play and borderline bench clearing scuffle to end it after the Squirrels had scored the winning goal in overtime.

Ryan Card in the second period and Anthony Butera in the third were the goal scorers for the Tommies. The team had several opportunities to score the winning goal but, as usual at the Aitken Centre, the bounces favoured the home team.

After the winning goal several players from each team had a little talk and embraced for a while with Kyle McAllister losing his cool with Squirrel Willy-wonka Johnston. It was bad enough that Coach Eagles came out to get his Captain out of the scuffle before it went to far. You really have to wonder what sort of tree rat antics old Willy-wonka was up to that actually irritated Kyle so dramatically? So what if you think we’re biased, we are, but do the Squirrels really think they can do what ever they want because their in their own “nest”? You’re going to get called on it every time, Tree Rats, because it might be your nest but it’s our yard too. Squirrel hockey is Squirrel hockey. Box Score. DG Story.

UPDATE: The Tommies will be playing UNB at 3:30 PM tomorrow afternoon in the finals of the Pete Kelly Classic. The Squirrels beat the Huskies in a shoot-out 4 - 3 to advance to the final. See you tomorrow!

If the Tommies were still feeling the affects of to much Christmas Turkey, they sure didn’t show it this afternoon against Manitoba. In fact it looked like they were still hungry for more and had a helping of Buffalo Burgers to boot. The Bisons never really got anything going and the Tommies started the scoring late in the first and added an empty netter late to cement the win. Not to mention a place in the championship game tomorrow afternoon against either AUS foe, SMU Huskies or the UNB Squirrels.

Matt Davis and Aaron Molnar shared the goaltending duties and stopped 16 of 17 shots. The Tommies had 30 shots on Manitoba with Ryan Murphy, Justin McCutcheon, Jeff Bateman, and Kyle Gailey, into the empty net, scoring goals for the Green and Gold Group. December 11th, 2006. Lady Tommies Continue Winning Spirit by Supporting
Our Community.

Most of us Tommies fans see our beloved team fight on the ice for wins but have you ever wondered what is going on off the ice? Take the Ladies team for example; these outstanding girls are out and about in the community supporting things from minor hockey for girls, to helping sick kids in the hospital. There is no fan fair there, just people helping people. Most of us may never know what these young women are doing to help, they may not even recognize it themselves, but the greatest reward is the gift of giving. Giving is the reward in itself. University is a chance at an education but what they learn about themselves and others is worth its weight in gold. Good work Tommies and THANKS!

December 10th, 2006. OPERATION “BEER ON ICE”

Operation “Beer on Ice” has begun. For those of you outside the Fredericton area, the Daily Gleaner published a great article by Bill Hunt on Tommies’ forward Stacy “Kegger” Beer fight against breast cancer and the hope of raising enough money to get her to Fredericton for the AUS championship that will be hosted by STU. December 1st, 2006. Tommies Skid Continues.
Tommies 3 - Panthers 6.

When things go good, they go really good. When things go bad, they go really bad. The Tommies, missing 3 regular players from the line up, did not get the result they wanted tonight in PEI. With any luck the Christmas break will heal the hurt of the past 3 games. Whatever doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

Tonight the Tommies started off strong and potted the first 2 goals. Scoring first for the Tommies was Justin Bowers from Bourbeau and Bateman. Justin was just out of the penalty box when he was sent in on a 2 on 0 with Bourbeau. Ryan Card increased the lead to two goals with assists to Kyle Gailey and Aaron Lobb. The Panthers replied by the end on the first with two power play goals and proceeded to score the next four before Kyle McAllister from McCutcheon and Cook ended the scoring late in the third. Aaron Molnar took the loss in net.

November 28th, 2006. Tommies at Lucky #7 in National Rankings.

The latest national rankings find the Tommies at #7 after a hard weekend on the ice. After a win against St. Thomas, UNB finds themselves at #3 and Moncton remains the top ranked team in the country at #1. These two schools will do battle tomorrow night (November 29th) in Moncton. It should make for an interesting game.

The Tommies finish up the first half of the season on Friday night in PEI. They will be without the services of Miguel Delisle and Nick Theriault. Both guys will be sitting out an automatic one game suspension for the third period ruckus against U de M.

It is understandable to be disappointed over this past weekend’s results but doesn’t adversity build a stronger team? It is much better for the team to have this result late in the first half than in the first 2 games of the finals. You don’t brush it off, you learn from it, because that’s what good teams like the Tommies do. The eight game winning streak was fun, it was great to see so many faithful (and patient) STU fans at the Aitken Centre on Friday, and it was interesting to see…..….Moncton???

November 26th, 2006. Tommies Falter in Moncton.
Tommies 1 - Moncton 6.

The Tommies kept it close for 2 periods but the third did them in. Moncton scored 4 goals while the Ladies tried, in vain, to get back in it.

U de M was first on the board at 7:40 before Ashley Duguay roofed one late in the first. Unfortunately the referee didn’t see it and it didn’t count. In the 2nd Rebecca Thompson let one rip from the point and Caroline Hammerheim was on the door step to bang home the rebound to tie the game. Moncton scored later in the second to make it 2 to 1 going to the third. They scored early on a carry over penalty to make it 3 to 1 and scored 3 more times as the Tommies lightened up on the D to get some offense. Emily Hobbs took the loss in nets on this night.

The Ladies will now regroup and get ready for a post Christmas tournament and the second half. We apologize for our tardiness in updating this game. Tommies News is updated.

November 25th, 2006. Tommies Take Care of Panthers.
Tommies 5 - Panthers 3.

In an afternoon game at the LBR, the Lady Tommies scored two early goals and two goals in the second period to put away PEI. Lindsay Coghlan stopped 14 of 17 shots for the win. Scoring for the Tommies in the first period was Catherine Boudreau (unassisted), Karlee Shields (Thompson, Duguay), and Caroline Hammerheim. The Panthers actually tied the game at 3 before the first was over.

In the second period of play Renee Edison got the game winner at 7:49 from Kelly Matthews and Catherine Boudreau. Sarah Sollows added an insurance goal and Catherine Boudreau, with her third point of the night, got the assist. Lindsay held the fort from there on in. The Ladies travel to Moncton tomorrow and play their final game of the first half.

In Men’s action tonight, the Tommies got spanked by Moncton 7 to 2. The Tommies started off well and scored the first 2 goals of the game. They took a 2 – 0 lead into the second period but the wheels on the bus fell off from there on. Moncton scored 6 unanswered goals in the second to take control and one more in the third. The Tommies goal scorers were Thatcher Bell and Matt Seymour. The Tommies head to the Island next weekend to play their last game of the first half.

November 24th, 2006. Squirrels Show Teeth and Dump Tommies.
Tommies 0 - Squirrels 3.

The theme tonight is to never believe your own hype and know thy enemy. When you’re winning everyone jumps on to enjoy the ride. Never under estimate your opponent, especially one like UNB, would be some more useless drivel for you.

The Tommies were by no means outclassed tonight but the breaks didn’t come our way. The Squirrels got one goal in each period and capitalized on a couple of Tommies mistakes, then played a great trap to seal the deal. UNB’s systems were almost flawless and any mistakes were covered up by their goalie. The win evens the season series at 1 game each.

Aaron Molnar was back in net tonight and stopped 23 of 26. It was good to see him playing. The Tommies PK unit has to be given full marks and continues to be solid. The 8 game winning streak was snapped but hey, nothing last for ever. Great Work Guys. The team will re-group and get ready for tomorrow’s game against Moncton. Game time 7 PM at the LBR. GO TOMMIES GO!

November 21st, 2006. Tommies Upward Trend Continues to #4.

The Tommies continue their swift accent of the CIS national rankings, finding themselves at #4. This comes on the heels of 2 wins at home against Acadia and St. Mary’s. STU has won 8 games in a row. The Moncton Aigles Bleus have claimed the #1 perch in the country after weekend wins in Antigonish and Halifax. Both teams have identical 10 and 2 records. CIS STORY.

The Tommies will be facing number one ranked Moncton Saturday night at the LBR but not before taking on their hated rival the #5 UNB Squirrels, Friday night at the Aitken University Centre. Game time for the 2nd edition of the “Battle of the Hill” is 7 PM. YOU DON”T WANT TO MISS THIS ONE, it is going to be a dandy. The game will be live on 96.5 JOY.FM locally but there will be no internet availability due to broadcast restrictions implemented by UNB.

November 19th, 2006. Tommies Stay Hot by Taming Huskies.
Tommies 5 - Huskies 3.

The scoring started early for the Tommies and the penalty kill unit, with the help of Matt Davis, sealed the win. This is the eighth consecutive win for the team, tenth win overall, and puts them at 20 points for the season. It also gives them a 4 point lead on the Huskies who have been charging hard as of late.

The Tom Cats got it going early when Chris Cook from Matt Seymour and Justin McCutcheon scored 33 seconds into it. By the 5:00 minute mark the Huskies were down three goals thanks to a PP goal by Kyle McAllister and a even strength goal by The Killer B line’s Justin Bowers. The other two B’s, Bourbeau and Bateman got assists on the 3rd goal and Bateman and Delilse on the 2nd. The first period heavily favoured the Tommies.

After 7 penalty calls in the first, the ref mellowed out and only called 4 in the second. The tempo seemed to favour St. Mary’s, who cut the lead by one mid way through, but the Tommies got that one back with 12 seconds left in the period on the power play. Thather Bell from Nick Theriault and Jeff Bateman converted to regain the 3 goal cushion.

The third period saw 6 Tommies penalties to St. Mary’s 1 and generally put STU down 2 men. SMU rallied with a 2 man advantage early in the third but Justin Bowers, with his second goal, got some insurance on a delayed call to the Huskies. SMU got one more but Matt Davis stood tall and shut the door when called upon. Final shots on goal were 40-31 favouring St. Mary’s. In other AUS action, ST FX beat UNB in OT, Moncton squeaked past Dalhousie, and Acadia dumped PEI. After all is said and done Moncton and STU remained tied for first, 2 points up on the Squirrels. It sets up an intense weekend for the Tommies with games against Moncton and UNB. Tommies News Updated.

November 18th, 2006. Tommies Chop Down Axemen.
Tommies 6 - Axemen 1.

Another terrific team effort resulted in another big win for the Tommies, driving their record to an outstanding 9 and 2. Every line contributed points, the defense was at it’s stingy best, and Super Matt Davis was almost perfect. His shut out streak was stopped at 137 minutes when Acadia scored at the 11:17 mark of the third. Our hats off to Matt.

The first period was scoreless with good end to end action and Matt looking really sharp in net. The scoring started when Jeff Bateman’s tenacity to the puck paid off when he didn’t give up and banged home his own rebound for an unassisted PP goal about half way through the second. Next on the score sheet was Kyle McAllister on a beauty shot to the top corner when the team was a man down, assists to Delisle and Card. The Tommies scored 2 late second period goals by Justin McCutcheon and Ian Turner to really drive a stake in Acadia’s heart.

In the third period it was more of the same when Captain Kyle, with his second goal, made it 5 to 0. Assist to Miguel Delisle. Sean Turner of “The Heart Foundation” made it 6 zip with assists to “The Killer B’s” Jean Bourbeau and Jeff Bateman. A great night for the gents. Matt Davis made 26 saves for his second win. Tommies Stats.

In Ladies action tonight from the Aitken Centre, the Tommies got thumped by the Squirrels 5 to 2. It wasn’t their best game of the year but these things happen. Michelle Goguen started things off with a beautiful end to end rush to make it 1 to 0. The Squirrels came back with the next 2 before Caroline Hammerheim knotted the game at 2. Early in the third UNB took control with 2 early goals and never looked back scoring one later in the period. Final shots on goal were 30 - 23 for the Squirrels. Emily Hobbs took the loss in net.

In other AUS news, 4 Tommies will be going to Turin, Italy to represent Team Canada. Congratulations to Aaron Molnar, Ian Turner, Anthony Butera, and Kyle McAllister. You guys earned it, we are VERY PROUD of our Tommies. Actually we think the whole team should go and represent us. The whole team is All-Stars. AUS STORY

November 17th, 2006. STU Tommies.com Picks for Team Canada.

As some of you are probably aware, the AUS will be sending a contingent of men’s hockey players to represent Canada at the up coming FISU University games in Torin, Italy. Each of the 8 AUS schools will be sending at least 2 players to compete for Team Canada. The coaches for Acadia, St. Mary’s, and UNB will be the ultimate judges of who goes but we’ve read several articles from different sports writers speculating on which players will make up the team. Here are our thoughts and ideas on the subject as it relates to the Tommies. As this is being written we have no idea who will or will not be picked.

Aaron Molnar. This guy is a given, a lock, a shoe in. Aaron has amassed the best stats in the AUS this season and has been amazing for the Tommies. He’s not only going to have a CIS Championship this coming year but also a gold medal from Turin hanging around his neck. There is nothing more to say than “Have a great trip Mr. Molnar and apply for you passport right away.”

Nick Theriault. Second team all-star last year and will probably end up with the same honour this year but Nick will be staying in Canada. How can we say that, Nick is great? Yes, he is, but one of the coaches, who will be picking the team, doesn’t care much for him. Maybe one of the others as well. Don’t believe it? Read Bruce Hallihan’s AUS review, do the math and you will probably agree. He should go but we’re not picking the team. If he makes the team we will be extremely surprised. Nick has an “I’ll show you mentality”, so his actions will speak the loudest later on.

Ian Turner. Leads the league in goals scored for defensemen with 5. Ian, Nick, and Patrick Gilbert of Moncton lead the league with a +7. He can log a ton of ice time and although he is a rookie in the AUS, he has 3 years of pro experience under his belt. He should be going.

Anthony Butera. On the AUS rookie team last season and is second on the Tommies in points for D-men. He’s a great competitor and he is our dark horse pick on D.

Kyle McAllister. Well liked and respected across the league, what coach wouldn’t want this guy on their team? They all know he can win face-offs and that is a good commodity to have. We think he’s a lock.

Thatcher Bell. We like the way this guy is playing this year. Maybe the other coaches haven’t seen enough of him but we have. He is one of our outside shots, he might get called to play.

Jeff Bateman. Having a great year on The Killer B line and can only get better. Good size, good play making ability, we will see.

November 14th, 2006. Tommies at #5 and Climbing.

The CIS rankings came out today and the Tommies are at #5. This is the highest the team has been ranked since their last championship in 2000-2001. Other AUS teams in the top ten are U de M at #2 and UNB at #4.

Congratulations to Justin Roy and Lindsay Coghlan this week’s men’s and women’s athletes of the week at STU. We would also like to pass our congratulations on to the women’s hockey team for their historic win against X on the 11th. This was the first ever win for the Ladies in Antigonish.

November 11th, 2006. X = Tommies + Shoot Out Victory.
Tommies 4 - X-Women 3 (Shoot out)

On a day of remembrance the Lady Tommies come up with a BIG victory they won’t soon forget. Three rookies came up with outstanding performances to propel the team to the win over the heavily favoured St FX X-Women.

The Swedish Connection of Malin Storas and “Sweet Caroline” Hammerheim teamed up to get the Tommies rolling on the PP in the first period. It was one of only 4 shots in the first by STU. The
X-Women tied it up with a PP goal of their own before the first was over but Lindsay Coghlan was stellar in net and held the fort by stopping 16 pucks in the opening period..

The Tommies moved ahead in the second frame on goals by Charity Walls from Marianne Waite and then Marianne Waite from Karlee Shields and Lucrece Nussbaum. The Tommies took a 3 to 2 lead into the 3rd but X forced overtime with an early third period goal. From then on Lindsay held the Tommies in it and Karlee Shields got the winning goal in the shoot out. In all the Tommies were outshot 55 to 18. An outstanding performance by the rookie goalkeeper. The win tonight is the Lady’s 3rd in a row. Way To Go!

We have been able to fix some of the site and have updated the following pages. Squirrels, Lady Tommies, and Tommies News.

November 10th, 2006. Tommies Keep on Rolling.
Tommies 6 - Panthers 0.

In a complete 60 minute effort, the Tommies continued to impress with another solid win. All four lines contributed in the scoring and Matt Davis picked up the shutout in his first full AUS outing.

The team started strong early in the first when the fourth line picked up their first points of the season. Justin Roy got his first goal of the season with assists to Sean Turner and Aaron Lobb. A real treat to see Sean get his fist AUS point in his first AUS game. The fourth line was at again later in the second period when Aaron Lobb, from Card and Roy, picked up his first goal of the season and second point of the night.

The Tommies didn’t stop the rest of the night with the other 4 goals being scored by Ian Turner, Nick Theriault, Chris Cook, and Ian Turner with his second. The scoring was distributed throughout the line up with 5 Tommies scoring 2 points including Jean Bourbeau of the Killer B line, Justin Roy, Aaron Lobb, Ian Turner, and Thatcher Bell.

Matt Davis was solid in net and stopped all 20 pucks he faced including some pretty pad saves to preserve the shut out in the third. On a more serious note Paul Giallonardo sustained an upper body injury in the third period. No word on his status for next weekend. With the win this evening the Tommies seize control of first overall in the conference with an 8 and 2 record.

In Ladies action from the Halifax, the Tommies came up with a big 3 -2 overtime win against Dalhousie. Amy MacLennan was the overtime heroin scoring at 5.35 of the extra session. Ashley Duguay set up the win. Dal forced overtime with a powerplay marker with 1:45 to go in the third just after the Tommies had surged ahead 2 to 1 on the pp at 17:36. The goal was scored by Ashley Duguay and assisted by Karlee Shields. Karlee had started the scoring in the first with an unassisted goal. Emily Hobbs got the win and stopped 33 shots in net.

Just a quick issue we would like to clarify to our faithful readers. When we made the comment “Under Rated or Over Achievers?” after the St. Mary’s game, it was not to be taken that we thought the team was Over Achievers, in fact the exact opposite is true. We feel the team was completely under rated by many observers early in the season and the same folks may feel the team is now over achieving. Our comment was meant in that sort of context. We are proud of “our” Tommies win or lose and think their start to the season is absolutely great. If we have offended any Tommie fans we sincerely apologize and hope that in the future you continue to write and let us know what your thinking. THANK YOU!

November 7th, 2006. Tommies Moving Up National Rankings.

Last week #10 and this week #7 with a bullet. After an excellent 3 games on the road, STU makes their triumphant return to the LBR on Friday evening. The UPEI Panthers will be in town to tangle with the Tommies and if you bring a coat for charity, admission is free. Even if you have your season’s pass still bring a coat, it’s for a worthy cause. Game time is 7 PM and is live on 96.5 JOY FM.

November 5th, 2006. Tommies Get First Win, Shut Out Style.
Tommies 2 - Panthers 0.

In a dominate performance this afternoon at the LBR, the Lady Tommies righted the ship somewhat and got their first win of 2006-07. Nicole Ernst from Charity Walls starting things off in the first for the home side. Towards the end of the period Karlee Shields dinged one of the crossbar and looked particularly dangerous. In the second frame, Amy MacLennan sneaked one by the UPEI goaltender while the Tommies had the two woman advantage. Assist to Ashley Duguay. Emily Hobbs got the shut out in net this afternoon and the Ladies heartily out shot their guests 36 to 9.

November 4th, 2006. Tommies March Past Huskies.
Tommies 4 - Huskies 1.

Once again, STU spotted the home team an early lead but stormed back to win with timely scoring and great defensive play. Aaron Molnar and Matt Davis split the goaltending duties and Jeff Bateman scored two goals, including the game winner.

Early in the first period St. Thomas fell 2 men down and surrendered a goal on the disadvantage. The Huskies lead was short lived as Thatcher Bell from Matt Seymour and Ian Turner tied it up. A few minutes after, Jeff Bateman scored the game winner on the PP with assists to Cook and McCutcheon. The Tommies finished the period by fighting off an extended 5 on 3 penalty kill successfully.

Early in the second frame Jeff Bateman was at it again scoring his second powerplay goal of the night with assists to McAllister and Cook. Aaron Molnar held the lead but with 5 minutes left in the period, suffered an injury that pulled him from the game. Matt Davis came in and shut the door for the remaining 25 minutes of play. Matt Seymour from Bell and Butera scored into the empty net to secure the win. The Killer B line of Bowers, Bourbeau, and Bateman “buzzzzzed” around all evening and are proving to be a huge threat for opposing teams.

With the win this evening the Tommies find themselves tied with only Moncton for first place in the league, with UNB just a point back and a game in hand. Moncton, UNB, and Acadia in OT were also victorious on this night. The Tommies should find themselves moving up substantially in the upcoming National rankings on Tuesday. Now that we have played all the AUS teams once, the question is, “STU Tommies, Under Rated or Over Achievers?”

Tomorrow afternoon the Ladies take on UPEI at 2PM, back at the LBR. Come out and support your Tommies. You may have noticed the font change on the home page, well, we experienced a major computer error last night after updating the game. We lost all the text, plus the links. At some point we may disappear off line, we apologize in advance. If the program is stable enough we plan on overhauling all our links and making some minor changes. If we do end up completely ruining things, we’ll do what we can to get back when we can. Thanks to our faithful viewers, it’s been a blast.

November 3rd, 2006. Olympic Sized Win for Tommies.
Tommies 5 - Axeman 2.

The Tommies spotted the home team an early 2 goal lead but not even the Olympic size ice surface was enough of an advantage for Acadia on this night. Jeff Bateman with a huge 4 point night, lead the Tom Cats in the comeback victory.

Seven minutes into the first period Acadia had built a lead on 2 even strength tallies. STU replied with a power play marker with 4 seconds left in the period when Jeff Bateman got his first with assists to McAllister and Bell. Bateman was back at it shorthanded in the second, when he sent Jean Bourbeau in to tie the game at 2. The Tommies would take their first lead, and eventual game winner, when the Killer B line’s Justin Bowers scored on a beauty deke at 14:03. Assists to Bourbeau and Bateman.

Acadia pressed hard in the third but Aaron Molnar kept them at bay and Jeff Bateman scored the insurance goal on the powerplay with less than 6 minutes remaining. McAllister and Bell with assists. Nick Theriault would cap things off with an empty netter courtesy of Kyle McAllister’s defensive zone face-off win. The Tommies stayed tied for first place with St Mary’s and Moncton. Both teams won this evening. This sets up a first place battle tomorrow evening at 7:30 PM from the Alumni Arena on the St. Mary’s campus. Pre game show starts at 7:15 on JOY FM.

November 1st, 2006. Tommies Blank UPEI.
Tommies 4 - Panthers 0.

The Tommies headed to the Island this evening looking for a big win and that’s exactly what they got. With a strong first period showing offensively and Aaron Molnar’s great play, the team heads to Nova Scotia this weekend on a 3 game winning streak.

Miguel Delisle started things off 1:13 into the first period, with the eventual game winner, assists to Ryan Card and Jeff Bateman. Shortly there after Captain McAllister potted 2 consecutive power play goals with assists to McCutcheon and Turner on the first one, Bowers and Theriault on the second one.

The first period was all Tommies but the second and third belonged to the Panthers. STU was constantly on the PK but Ryan Card, with a laser shot, beat the UPEI goaltender at 7:31 of the second unassisted. Aaron Molnar closed the door the rest of the way and made 33 saves in all. St. Thomas only had 9 shots over the final 2 periods to finish with a game total of 21. The penalty killers certainly played a huge role in the win this evening. The Tommies now find themselves in a 3 way tie for first place with 10 points. U de M lost to the Squirrels and SMU beat X in overtime tonight. The Tommies will face Acadia on Friday and SMU on Saturday. Both games on 96.5 JOY-FM. Tommies Boxscores and Stats

October 31st, 2006. Tommies Nationally Ranked at #10.

The CIS national rankings were released today and St. Thomas is at #10. The University of Alberta leads the way at #1 and U de Moncton is a close #2. Other AUS schools in this weeks rankings include #6 UNB and #7 ST FX.

October 29th, 2006. Lady Tommies Get X’ed Out.
Tommies 2 - X-Women 4.

It wasn’t a blow out at the York Arena but it wasn’t the result the Lady Tommies were looking for either. The Lady’s fall to 0 and 4 to start the season after this afternoon’s tough game. The team hung tough and had the lead going into the 3 rd period but X was to strong. Malin Storas (unassisted) started the scoring in the first minute of the second and assisted on Amy MacLennan’s goal mid way through the period to round out the Tommies scoring. Emily Hobbs played well in net and stopped 43 shots. Hang tough Ladies, you will turn it around.

October 28th, 2006. Bell Rings In For Tommies.
Tommies 3 - X-Men 2 (OT).

Thatcher Bell was ringing loud and clear tonight at the York Arena. A huge 3 point performance for Thatcher, including the overtime winner, helped the team to a huge 4 point weekend in the standings
After a scoreless first, ST FX got a goal in the second to open the score. They took that lead into the third before Justin Bowers banged one home early on to tie the game, assists to Bell and Turner. A few minutes later the Tommies took the lead when Bell scored a highlight reel goal. On a pretty rush up ice, he drug the puck past the ST FX d-man and fired one where Mama keeps the Halloween treats......Top Shelf. Justin McCutcheon and Aaron Molnar got the assists.

Just when things seemed to be going the Tommies way the Ref makes a questionable call (in our view) on Chris Cook for high sticking. X ties the game with under five minutes to go and forces OT. The Tommies came out flying in overtime and early into it Justin Bowers made a beautiful pass, second point of the night, out to Bell, who sent the Tommies’ fans home happy. Paul Giallonardo had the other
assist. Outstanding performance by Thatcher this evening. Aaron Molnar picked up his 4th win of the season by stopping 18 pucks tonight. Next game for the men is Wednesday evening at UPEI. 7:30 PM start time and the game can be heard live on 96.5 JOY-FM starting at 7:15 for the pre-game show. GREAT WEEKEND GENTS!!

In Lady’s action this afternoon, the Tommies lost 3 to 1 to Dalhousie. Dal scored first but the Tommies replied before the first period was over when Malin Storas scored with assists to Amy MacLennan and Lucrece Nussbaum. The Tigers scored early in the second by squeaking one through the five hole of Lindsay Coghlan and sealed the deal by scoring in the third. Lindsay took the loss in net in her first regular season action but looked really solid and probably deserved a better fate. The Tommies were 12 for 12 on the PK and barely out shot 34-30. The Ladies face a big challenge tomorrow afternoon when they face perennial favourite ST FX. Game time 2 PM.

October 27th, 2006. Tommies Take Down Tigers.
Tommies 4 - Tigers 2.

The old York Arena certainly seems to have a flair for the dramatic. The Tommies had a 2 goal lead early in the second period but it took Aaron Molnar and a third period goal to seal the win.
Kyle McAllister started things off half way through the first with assists going to Ryan Card and Miguel Delisle. Early in the second Miguel Delisle scored an unassisted power play goal which deflected off a Dalhousie defenceman. The Tigers cut the lead in half midway thorough the second period and tied it up short handed early in the third. The Tommies regained the lead shortly after that.

Dal had a delayed penalty and Molnar was just to the bench when Ian Turner from Jeff Bateman scored the go ahead goal. Then it was a true case of deja vous from last weekend against UNB. A penalty shot was given to the Tigers at 13:05 and Aaron Molnar held the fort by making a big save just like the week before. Jeff Bateman scored an empty netter with seconds left on the clock with the assist going to his childhood buddy Ian Turner. The Tommies outshot the Tigers 38-20.

Tomorrow the Lady Tommies take on the Lady Tigers at 3:00 PM and the men host ST FX at 7:00 PM. Both games at the York Arena. Come out and support your Tommies.

October 22nd, 2006. Lady Tommies Come Up Empty at SMU.
Tommies 0 - Huskies 2.

Another close one against St. Mary’s but to no avail for the Tommies. No goals to report and Emily Hobbs made 36 saves in a losing effort. The Ladies begin the season 0 and 2. In other AUS action, U de M got a surprising 6 to 1 win against Dalhousie and Mt Allison beat UPEI 4 to 1.

October 21st, 2006. Tough Night in Moncton For Tommies.
Tommies 4 - Aigles Bleus 6.

The Tommies played tough in Moncton this evening but weren’t able to beat another top ranked team. The score was 2 to 1 for Moncton after the first period. Chris Cook got a pretty wrap around goal, assisted by Miguel Delisle, half way through the period to cut an early Moncton lead in half. Before the first was over Miguel nailed the post but close doesn’t count in hockey.Moncton scored on a 2 on 0 to regain the two goal cushion but Matt Seymour answered back for STU shortly after, with assists to McCutcheon and Bell. Penalty trouble in the third allowed Les Aigles to pull away with 3 consecutive goals to make it 6 to 2. Kyle McAllister, with assists to Delisle and Bell scored with 5 minutes left. The Killer B line rounded out the scoring with just over a minute left when Jean Bourbeau potted one, with assists to Bowers and Bateman. The Tommies return to the York Arena next Friday night against Dalhousie. Come out and support your St. Thomas Tommies.

In Ladies action, the Tommies lost a tough one in Sackville 3 to 2. Scoring for the Tommies were Charity Walls unassisted in the first to open the scoring and Karlee Shields in the third with an assist to Ashley Duguay to finish it. Liette Arsenault took the loss in nets. Next game for the Tommies is tomorrow afternoon against St Mary’s in Halifax. Go Get’m Tommies.

October 20th, 2006. Mighty Squirrels Slain by STU.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 1.

One battle doesn’t win you the war but it sure can feel that way. The heavily favoured UNB team came into the night’s action undefeated and the buzz around was, they were going to stay that way. In a HUGE team effort the Tommies pulled together and got a big win. The Squirrels scored first in the opening period when the Tommies fell 2 men down. UNB capitalized on the 5 on 3 but it was to be the only goal they would get by Aaron Molnar on this night.

In the second period the Tommies got back on even terms at 7:05 when Jeff Bateman got a beautiful shorthanded goal on a break away. Jean Bourbeau got the assist. Matt Seymour played a SUPER game and got the game winner 2 minutes into the third period with assists going to Thatcher Bell and Justin McCutcheon. With five minutes gone in the period Anthony Butera lost his stick and got called for dragging down a UNB player on a break away. The Tommies were leading 2 to 1 and the top Squirrel shooter get’s a PENALTY SHOT. It was time for Aaron Molnar to come to the rescue and that he
did. The Squirrel player made his move and Aaron followed him, made the save, and the puck dribbled wide. Lead preserved.

A little brew ha ha broke out with 7 minutes to go but that was about it. Justin McCutcheon scored another shorthanded marker into the empty net with 3 seconds to go. Captain McAllister got the only assist by winning a faceoff. A couple of notes. The Killer B line of Bateman, Bourbeau, and Bowers looked really sharp. Matt Seymour looked great and Molsie was on fire. It was a complete team effort and we are proud of the entire team. THANK YOU, GREAT WORK. Good luck tomorrow night in Moncton. In other scores tonight SMU 6 ACA 5, UPEI 2 UdM 0.

October 19th, 2006. Lady Tommies Have Big Hills to Climb.

It seems that every year the Lady Tommies make big strides in improving their hockey club. The
2006-07 year is no different with at least 5 super players coming on board to suit up for the Green and Gold. It’s not going to be an easy season but nothing worth having is ever easy. The Tommies begin their regular season Saturday night against Mt. Allison.

October 16th, 2006. Big Weekend Ahead.

If you haven’t already looked ahead to this weekend’s games, the Tommies will be playing two tough matches against the Squirrels and the Aigles Bleus. Both of these highly touted teams are undefeated heading into weekend action. Although it is early in the year it should be a great barometer of how the Tommies are going to stack up. Tomorrow you will probably find out that either Moncton or UNB will be nationally ranked first in the CIS.

On Friday evening the men will entertain the high flying Squirrels at the Tommies temporary home, the York Arena. UNB has been dubbed the early season favourite’s for the AUS championship by more than a few observers. Even coming from a Squirrel detracting source, such as this site, one can hardly argue that the “Squirrel’s Nest” hasn’t been loaded with some highly skilled rodents. Are they beatable? You’re right they are!! They’re fast and will make you take penalties if you touch them with your stick but if you can lay the body to them, at given opportunities, the defense steers them to the corners, and your goalie is “on” the Squirrels will fall. Discipline, Discipline, Discipline. The Tommies can’t get caught flat footed or else UNB will make them pay. The Squirrels have 3 lines that will do that with every mistake, you better be aware going in, this rodent has teeth, lots of them.

Points in this league are going to be at a premium the entire year. Therefore STU had better learn to turn the other cheek when it comes to retaliatory penalties. We like the gritty hockey but as much as we dislike saying it, the guys are going to have to turn away and be the better hockey players. Especially against UNB and U de M.

It doesn’t get any easier going to Moncton on Saturday night. I can’t remember the exact line that Bruce Hallihan used last year in his AUS review but I believe it was something like “teams enjoy playing in Moncton about as much as a cat enjoys a dog pound.” You get the jest of it; Moncton isn’t an easy place to get wins. That being said, Moncton has one really big line. Shut them down and you’ve got a better shot at winning. They are by no means a one line team but if you neutralize the big one and you outscore the others, it’s a win. The Tommies did it to perfection last year at the LBR and skated away with a 3 to 2 win.

October 15th, 2006. Boudreau STUns Squirrels in Last Minute.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 2

Those pesky Doe Squirrels put up a fight this afternoon at the York Arena but Catherine Boudreau made sure they would go home losers. With 22 seconds left in the third period Ashley Duguay threw the puck over to Boudreau, who shot it passed the helpless Squirrel net minder. It completed a perfect weekend for the Ladies, who went 3 and 0 in exhibition play.

The Doe Squirrels scored 2 third period goals to tie the game but it only served to get their hopes up. Also scoring for the Tommies was Malin Storas and Rebekah Thompson. Liette Arseneault got the start in nets and played the entire game. The Tommies begin their regular season on the road next weekend with games at Mt. Allison and Saint Mary’s. Go Get’m!!

October 14th, 2006. Last Minute Goal Sink Tommies.
Tommies 2 - X-Men 3.

St FX X-Men got a last minute goal to squeak past the Tommies in Antigonish. It was the second game in a row where X went down by 2 goals early, only to fight back and win late. The Tommies started strong with two goals in the first by Justin Bowers and Ian Turner but couldn’t score again on the X goalie. The Tommies heartily out shot the X-men but shots don’t count in this league.

The third goal by X was not without controversy as the goal light failed to come on. Aaron Molnar was incensed with the goal. The referee and linesmen conferred but to no avail for the Tommies. Kyle McAllister and Miguel Delisle buzzed around the X goal late but could not come up with the equalizer. The next game for the Tommies will be next Friday night against the Squirrels, 7 PM at the York Arena.

In Lady’s exhibition action this afternoon the Tommies were 5 - 4 winners over Moncton. Scoring for the Tommies was Lucrece Nussbaum, Malin Storas, Nicole Ernst, and 2 by Karlee Shields. Karlee buzzed around all game and made the UdeM defense look foolish on several occasions. She hit the post late in the first and one early in the second. Emily Hobbs got the call in nets and played the entire game. One miraculous save late in the 3rd prevented overtime. The Lady Tommies play their last game of the exhibition season tomorrow afternoon against the Doe Squirrels. Game time 2 PM at the York Arena. Go Tommies!

October 14th, 2006. AUS Season Review.

Yesterday’s edition of the Fredericton Daily Gleaner had it’s annual AUS review. It has now been posted, in two parts because of size, on the CIS national site. (links below) An interesting read for sure, although we may not agree 100% with the analysis, Bruce Hallihan has done a fabulous job. PART 1 and PART 2.

Here is the Halifax Chronicle Herald story on last nights STU/DAL game. The official box scores have not been posted as of 8:30 this morning. Remember the pre-game show for tonight’s game against X starts at 6:45 on 96.5 JOY FM.

October 13th, 2006. Tommies Start Off Strong in Halifax.
Tommies 6 - Tigers 3.

Friday the 13th proved to be lucky for the Tommies on opening night in Halifax. A four point night by Kyle McAllister, including two PP goals in the first period, powered the team to victory. Also scoring for the Tommies was Chris Cook, Ian Turner, Justin Bowers with his first AUS goal and a pretty marker by Jean Bourbeau to cap things off. Aaron Molnar was strong in net including several dynamite saves late in the second to keep the Tigers at bay. Nick Theriault had a 3 point evening, while Justin Bowers and Miguel Delisle both had 2. The team will travel to Antigonish tomorrow evening to play ST FX. GO TOMMIES!

Shaun MacKenzie did a fabulous job calling the inaugural game by JOY FM. Tomorrow’s game will also start at 6:45. Congratulations all around.

In women’s exhibition action, the Lady Tommies downed the visiting PEI Canada Games Team 2 - 0. Ashley Duguay scored the shorthanded winner on a pretty pass mid way through the third. Caroline Hammerheim scored the insurance goal on some hard fore checking that resulted in her getting a clear shot on net. Lindsay Coghlan was strong in net and got the shut out victory. The Tommies were 0 for 4 on the PP and PEI was 0 for 8. Tomorrow the Ladies take on Moncton, 2 PM at the York arena. Should be a good one as Moncton dumped the Doe Squirrels today 5 to 1.

October 12th, 2006. AUS Men’s Season Starts Tomorrow.

The 2006-07 season kicks off tomorrow evening for all 8 AUS men’s teams. The Tommies will begin their season on the road when they face the Dalhousie Tigers at 7 PM. You can catch all the action live on Joy FM beginning at 6:45 PM when the pre game show begins.

We were fortunate enough to catch Coach Eagles interview this morning on JOY FM around 8:10 AM. Maybe we throw a few to many thank yous out to people but good manners are dirt cheap, you might think more people would have them. A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to Coach Eagles for securing this broadcast partnership. It isn’t enough that this guy has almost every responsibility for the men’s hockey team on his plate. Then goes out and gets this deal. To you fans who read this, I hope you realize how lucky we are. The Coach did this for the team, their families, alumni and YOU! THANK YOU COACH FOR THE COMMITMENT YOU SHOW ST. THOMAS TOMMIES HOCKEY! It is appreciated.

If your interested in some live hockey action tomorrow, you can catch the Lady Tommies in exhibition action, 7:00 PM at the York Arena. They face off against the NB Canada Games Team. Better yet, bring a portable FM radio and follow both the men’s and women’s teams. GO TOMMIES!!

October 8th, 2006. Site Updates.

We took a little time today and updated a few links on the Lady Tommies site. We have also added links to the other 7 teams in AUS women’s hockey.

Is there something you would like to see on STU Tommies.com? Have an idea? Want us to stop teasing the Squirrels? (NOT GOING TO HAPPEN) Get a hold of us! This is a Tommies Hockey clearing house of information. Let us know your thoughts. Thanks again for visiting and GO TOMMIES GO!!

October 7th, 2006. Tommies Battle in Boston.
Tommies 3 - Eagles 5. (EXH)

The NCAA number one ranked Boston College Eagles held on for a win tonight against the Tommies in Boston. The Eagles were leading 3 to 0 after 2 periods before STU pressed to make it interesting in the 3rd. Scoring for the Tommies in the final period was Justin Bowers, Thatcher Bell, and Justin McCutcheon. Nick Theriault had 2 assists. The Eagles scored an empty netter to end STU’s hope of a comeback. Final shots on goal were 30-21 in favour of Boston College. Aaron Molnar got the call in nets and played the whole game. This was the Tommies final preseason game before the AUS regular season opens up next Friday night in Halifax against the Dalhousie Tigers. BOX

October 6th, 2006. Tommies Lose, Captain Returns.
Tommies 0 - Friars 4. (EXH)

STU was in tough this evening against the Providence College Friars of the NCAA Hockey East league. The Tommies were out shot 37 to 20 and surrendered 3 power play goals, 2 of them in the 3rd. All three goalies saw action tonight with Aaron Molnar starting, Matt Davis playing the second period, and Guillaume Miszczak getting the third. Each of them surrendered at least one goal.

The best news of the night is the return of Kyle McAllister to line up. Kyle had 2 shots on goal, even +/-, and 6 minutes in penalty time. Welcome back Captain! Tomorrow evening Kyle will lead the Tommies into battle against the number one ranked Boston College Eagles at 8 PM AST. BOX - RECAP

October 5th, 2006. OH JOY, Tommies Have a Broadcast Partner!

Plenty of news to report on this day. The St Thomas Men’s Tommies have partnered with local radio station, 96.5 Joy FM, to broadcast all 28 regular season games and playoffs. Shaun MacKenzie, station manager at Joy FM, will be the new voice of the Tommies. We have not created any links yet, but you can be sure we will as time permits. STAY TUNED. All the games will be available on the internet, most likely, with the exception of games against UNB at the Aitken Centre. These game will only be available locally on 96.5 JOY FM or for a fee from UNB’s home game webcaster
news-cast.com.

On behalf of Tommie fans we would like to send a sincere THANK YOU to Dave Ritchie for broadcasting St. Thomas games on CHSR for many years. We will miss that distinctive “he Sccccooooorrrrrrrreeeeesssss” announcement after every goal. THANK YOU again, we’ve spent many winter evenings listening to you.

In other news, the Tommies will be playing their first 3 regular season home games at the York Arena. Renovations to the LBR are behind schedule and have prompted the change in venue. The York will play host to the Squirrels on October 20th, Dal on the 27th, and St FX on the 28th.

One more note about the Tommies schedule. Both away games against UPEI will start at 7:30 PM not 7:00 PM as previously noted. This will be updated on our schedule page as soon as possible.

October 3rd, 2006. Tommies Unsuccessful in Sussex.
Tommies 3 - Aigles Bleus 4.

The 2006-07 pre-season didn’t get any better for the Tommies in Coach Eagles home town tonight. A broken sheet of glass delayed the game for a while and when the game started, Moncton eventually held on for a win. Scoring for the Tommies was Miguel Delisle with 2 and Jeff Bateman with the other. Matt Davis and Guillaume Miszczak split the goaltending duties on this night with Matt allowing 3 goals and Miszczak the other.

The Tommies hit the road this weekend to play a couple exhibition games against Hockey East opponents Providence Friars and US College number one ranked Boston College Eagles.

October 1st, 2006. Lady Tommies Fall To Huskies.
Tommies 0 - Huskies 4.

The Lady Tommies found out where their game has to go if they expect to compete for the AUS championship this season. The always strong SMU Huskies were in town for an exhibition match and walked away victorious. Lindsay Coghlan, in her first AUS action, got the start for the Tommies. She allowed 3 goals in the first 2 periods. An impressive first outing for this young puck stopper. Emily Hobbs played the 3rd and surrendered a goal. Look for these two teams to do battle later in the year.

Here is a little more information on the recruiting class of 2006-07. Six new players join the ranks of the Varsity Green and Gold. Hey, why don’t we change our official nick name to the “Varsity Green and Gold”.....nah that would be silly, who would officially call themselves a colour when there are thousands of real nicknames out there? Anyhow, here are the new recruits.

Lucrece Nussbaum from Weinfelden Switzerland. A new body on D. She will bring a fierce determination to the team. She has been to several tryouts with the Swiss National team and hopes to win a spot at Christmas to play for them at the Worlds in March.

Malin Storas from Surahammar Sweden. A country mate of Caroline Hammerheim’s, she will bring a heavy shot to her position at forward. Look for her to get some big goals in the future.

Shana Noseworthy from Goose Bay Labrador. She will be joining the team in January. 5'10" forward who can finish. Played for Team Atlantic at the U18 Nationals in January of 2005.

Local product, Sarah Sollows is back with the team. Sarah had a great game against UNB yesterday in preseason and is going to be a key contributor all year.

Lindsay Coghlan from Okotos Alberta. You’ve probably read about her this summer in the article found below. She is going to be a great addition to the team and played well against SMU today.

Karlee Shields from Edmonton Alberta. This girl is going to be a huge reason why the Tommies are going to contend this year. Great skills and can lift her game up to the next level when the need be. A great addition to the team.

September 30th, 2006. Lady Tommies Start Off Strong.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 1.

In their usual great form, the Lady Tommies dumped the visiting UNB Squirrels at the York Arena this afternoon. In a penalty filled affair, the Tommies scored first on the PP when Hannah Muir picked up her own rebound and put it past the Squirrel netminder. Hannah Muir got goal number 2 when she picked up Sarah Sollows rebound and shot it home before the first period ended.

UNB made it close late in the second period with a tally of their own but Sarah Sollows, on a break away, put the game out of the Squirrels reach early in the third. Liette Arseneault played the first and second periods in net and Emily Hobbs finished things off in the third. Thanks again Ladies!! You just keep doing us proud!!! Tomorrow the SMU Huskies are in town, 2 PM at the York Arena.

In men’s action this evening the Tommies were dumped by a vastly improved UPEI Panther Team, 5 to 2. Scoring for the Tommies were Thatcher Bell and Justin Bowers. Aaron Molnar and Guillaume Miszckak shared the nets.

From Halifax tonight, the STU Old Star Tommies had a great tournament. The Tommies played 3 games against Moncton, Mt Allison, and SMU. Moncton won 3 to 2 in a shoot out. Moncton scored with less than a second left in the third to tie. (Let’s see the video replay of that one!!). Game 2 saw the Tommies win 10 to 3 against Mt. A. Bruce Gillis and Ron Vaive both had hat tricks. Game 3, against perennial powerhouse SMU, was close but the boys bowed out 4 to 3 in a shoot out. A great weekend was had by everyone and Andrew wants you Tommie alumni to make plans NOW to attend next fall where this is an annual event.

The Tommies roster consisted of Andrew Sim, Stu Dunn, Ron Hatfield, Todd Kennedy, Bruce Gillis, Scott Seely, Ron Vaive, Wade Stewart, Mike Couch, and Rob Blackmore. Team MVP for the Tournament was Mr. Ron Vaive. Great work!

September 29th, 2006. Squirrels Win Inaugural President’s Cup.
Squirrels 6 - Tommies 1.

We don’t have much to say. Congratulations to UNB on their victory tonight. :-( Please take notice of the frowning face, an appropriate response after a loss to your most bitter rival. You certainly don’t smile after a loss like that, even if the game is over and it’s your own father shaking your hand. It is one thing to be a sportsman and something entirely else to show your enemy weakness. Preseason or not, a losing effort isn’t the time to smile.

Matt Seymour and Nick Theriault....great game....you guys get it. Not because you got ejected from the game, you just get it. Grab some rookies and explain it!

The Tommies were out shot 29 to 20. Thatcher Bell scored the only goal late in the third from Anthony Butera and Justin McCutcheon. It ruined the shut out for UNB’s goalie. Tomorrow the Lady Tommies take on the Doe Squirrels at 1 PM at the York Arena and then the men take on UPEI at 5:30 PM. ST FX beat UPEI 3 to 2 in the early game this evening.

September 27th, 2006. Tommies Early History.

Stutommies.com is very proud to bring you an early history of Tommies hockey. It is presented on our What’s a Tommie? page and we believe will be a favourite with all our fans. The history has been transcribed from the book “By Force of Circumstance” A History of St. Thomas University by James A. Fraser. We hope you enjoy it.

September 25th, 2006. Pre Season Begins Friday Night.

The 2006-07 AUS pre-season begins Friday night at the Aitken Centre for the Tommies against their long time rivals the UNB Squirrels. The puck is scheduled to drop at 8:30 PM in the inaugural President’s Cup game. The following evening STU plays the winner/loser of ST FX vs. UPEI in the early game, depending on the outcome of the UNB game, at 5:30 PM at the York Arena. St. Thomas will play 3 more pre-season matches against U de M in Sussex on Tuesday, October 3rd and a weekend road trip against NCAA schools Providence and Boston College October 6th & 7th. The regular season begins on October 13th against Dalhousie in Halifax.

A couple of factors going into this season will be the play of key Tommie players. With out question, St. Thomas’s most underrated player for the past 3 years has been Chris Cook. One of our favourite Tommies, Chris comes to play every night and contributes in every possible situation. He scores timely goals, plays against opposing teams’ top lines, plays on both special teams, and is a noted leader by Coach Eagles. Rarely does he get the credit he earns because he is such a low key individual. Don’t expect this “Cookie” to crumble when the going gets tough. 2006-07 should be another great year, just like his past 3.

Jeff Bateman is the pivotal key to Tommie prosperity this season. Compared by some last year to Acadia’s Kevin Baker, Jeff didn’t have a great year. He sustained an injury in the first half that limited his playing time, much the same way Baker had in his rookie season. If the Baker analogies were correct, this will be Jeff’s break out season. Hopefully sustained health and good conditioning will prevail through the entire season.

The Tommies big new recruit is high scoring forward Justin Bowers. The question isn’t whether he has the talent but will he be able to use it in this league. With players 2 or 3 years older in the AUS, as opposed to 2 or 3 years younger in his last year of junior, will his talent show immediately or take time to develop? If the refs call the games with the new rules as they are suppose to, Justin could really benefit immediately and make an impact on the top lines.

Miguel Delisle is set to return for his second season. Here is one of the largest catalyst’s for the entire team, on many different levels. We’re not sure if all Tommie fans really understand this guy’s purpose and/or role on the team. This considering some of you were chirping at him last year during games at the LBR. If there is a problem Coach Eagles will deal with it, otherwise, back off. Miguel knows how to score and does just that, plus more. Don’t quote us but to our recollection he didn’t miss one break away/penalty shot last season and he had several. If he goes in alone, he scores, that’s it. He has attitude galore and that makes it all the more fun. Eccentric, maybe, but the Tommies are a much better TEAM because of him. Go get em’ Miguel.

September 21st, 2006. Tommies Alumni Reminder.

Just a quick reminder that Andrew Sim is still looking for a couple of extra STU players for the Molson Old Stars Tournament. This is going to be a great time for all you former Tommies looking to relive the glory days.

September 13th, 2006. Tommies vs. Squirrels for President Cup.

When the St Thomas Tommies play their arch rival the UNB Squirrels on September 29th, it will be for the bragging rights to a new trophy called the "Presidents Cup." This according to today's edition of the Daily Gleaner. This will add a new dimension to an already heated rivalry between the two teams and should show the new recruits early what the "Battle of the Hill" is all about.

UNB’s Athletics Director summed up the rivalry pretty well when he said, "It means a lot of things to a lot of different people," Dickie said. "To some, it's like the Hatfields and the McCoys. For others, it's just a good healthy sports rivalry." He’s right. You have the die hard fans who loathe the other team and the moderate, sit back and enjoy the game fans. If this site does promote one thing, that one thing is come to the games, support your team, and realize at the end of the night it is just a game. A great game mind you, but nevertheless a game. We will never like the Squirrels but we will always love to hate them.

September 6th, 2006. New Official Tommies Websites Unveiled.

The St Thomas University Tommies have released their new look websites for Men’s and Women’s hockey. All the links on STU Tommies.com have been updated or in the process of being updated. We would like to congratulate the Tommies on their new fresh look site, we think the fans and students are going to love it.

We have also updated links to the new UPEI men’s site, as well as adding links to the official and “non”-official Squirrel sites. Yes, we’re serious, they’ve been added to our Squirrels page for quick access. They already appear on our site, as a courtesy, but had not been added in the most obvious place. Our over sight, duly corrected. While we’re talking about Squirrels, the Saturday September 2nd issue of the Daily Gleaner reported that our most beloved rodent, Craig Mahon, has left the proverbial nest and will be playing for the Port Huron Flags of the UHL. Well Craig, there was no one we loved to hate more. Good Riddance, we hope you have fond memories of your last game against the Tommies....oh what was that score now...10 to 3? Consider it your parting gift.

September 1st, 2006. Where Are They Now?

Former Tommie Brad Woods is playing in France this season for Grenoble MH38.

Derek Campbell is playing for the Manchester Phoenix in England.

Other former AUS standouts are also plying their trade across the pond this year including; Dan Tudin, Chris Stanley, Eric Braff, and Kurt MacSweyn. If you have any information on Tommies Alumni you would like to share e-mail us.

AUGUST 31st, 2006. NHL Rules to Apply to AUS Hockey.

A story in the Halifax Daily News is reporting that Hockey Nova Scotia will be clamping down on “clutch and grab hockey” similar to the NHL last season. Accordingly, the AUS is included. Therefore NB and PEI refs will be calling the games in a similar manner. We all know what this means, both hands on the stick, no sticks on an opposing player, and neutral zone holding are a thing of the past.

AUGUST 24th, 2006. Tommies News.

Kyle McAllister is attending training camp of the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. We want to extend our best wishes hoping our “Captain” gets promoted to “Admiral”. If not, we hope to see Kyle back for his final year.

Coach Eagles has announced one more new recruit for this season. Kyle Gailey is a 6’2” forward from Airdrie, Alberta who played for the Drayton Valley Thunder of the AJHL last season.

Tommies vs. Squirrels on Sept. 29th.

As luck has it, our first game of the 2006-07 season will be against the Squirrels at the Aitken Centre, 7 PM start on September 29th. This will be the second game of the UNB Fall Classic Tournament. UPEI and ST FX will have an eariler start time. Depending on the outcome of the Squirrels game, the Tommies will be playing the winner/loser of UPEI vs. STFX at the York Arena (5:30PM start) on September 30th.

AUGUST 22nd, 2006. Tommies Alumni Wanted.

The Tommies 2005-06 co-MVP Andrew Sim is trying to put together a team for the 2006 Molson Old Stars Tournament September 29-30 at the St. Mary's Alumni Arena in Halifax. He is looking for any former Tommie players that have played at least one year and is interested in having a good time. If your interested you can Register Here and Andrew will get in contact with you. Come on Tommie alumni...GET INVOLVED!

AUGUST 17th, 2006. Tommies Season Outlook.

Lots of new information to report today. The Tommies 2006-07 Season Outlook has been posted on the team’s official website and here is a brief summary. First and foremost there is a chance that Captain Kyle McAllister could be returning for his 5th year. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Kyle decides on coming back, you can't replace a guy like him.

Only four of the seven 05-06 defensemen are returning. Gone from the ranks are Garrett Seymour, Richard Power, and Mike Couch. Sorry to see those guys go. They were all great players. This leaves the Tommies with 3 defense pairings that include the 2 rookies Ian Turner and Joel Leitner. There are no surprises up front with the likes of Bell, Bateman, and Delisle set to return and light the AUS on fire. Ryan Murphy and Justin Bowers should fit right in.

In goal the Tommies will be carrying 3 goalies this year. Aaron Molnar, Matt Davis, and Guillaume Miszczak. Pay attention during the exhibition games this fall and see how each of them do. You can't help but like Molnar and Davis but Miszczak may surprise a few people. His stats look pretty good in the AJHL.

In other news, St. Thomas should be releasing their new look official Men's and Women's hockey web sites in the coming weeks. As soon as they do, you will be notified right here. Stay tuned.

The Tommies competition at the UNB Fall Classic Tourney is shaping up like this. STU, STFX, UPEI, and UNB to date. If there is any other additions we'll let you know. The Christmas tournament will feature STU, SMU and UNB for sure.

AUGUST 14th, 2006. Schedule update.

Unless something changes dramatically, this should be the last schedule update for sometime. The Tommies will be playing an exhibition game against the Boston College Eagles (@ Boston) on Saturday, October 7th. Also, the team will be taking part in the Pete Kelly Classic Tournament held at UNB over the Christmas break and a link has been created to the AVR Network for all broadcasts of STU vs. Acadia games in 06-07.

To all of you die hard Tommie fans and AUS information seekers, we want to say thanks for visiting. It is your support that makes our AUS conference 2nd to none and (in our opinion) the Tommies the best men’s/women’s team in the league. It is your excitement and dedication to your team that makes others want to come and see what the fuss is all about. THANK YOU!

AUGUST 12th, 2006. New Recruit Information.

Matt Davis. Previous teams – Moncton Wildcats, Lewiston MAINEiacs, University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, and Saint John Scorpions. Drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2002, 264th overall. The following is a quote from the article “AUS Season Preview” written by Bruce Hallihan and published October 13, 2005 in the Daily Gleaner. “Goaltender Matt Davis (Ottawa Gee-Gees) will red shirt [for UNB] this season [2005-06].” In a moment of clarity did Matt see that being a Squirrel wasn’t all that appealing after all? Good choice Matt!

Matt’s statistics seem to indicate a good goalie on mediocre teams. His save percentage was typically in the high 800’s and his GAA got better every year in junior. With a good defense core in front of him, which the Tommies certainly have in 2006-07, expect good things from this local boy from Harvey.

Joel Lietner. Previous teams – Charlottetown Abbies and Woodstock Slammers. Joel is another player who progressively got better as his junior career went on. He has good size for a D-man and is coming off an impressive year in Woodstock where he was named to the MJAHL first team all-stars. Without a change to the lineup this season, the defense corps is going to be a hard place to get a steady job. While we don’t know who will be returning this fall for certain, we have heard that Richard Power is not coming back. There is also the option of putting versatile Nick Theriault up front and letting him play the point on the PP, to allow for a couple of defense spots to open up. Nevertheless, Lietner is going to have to work extra hard if he is going to play every night with the likes of Couch, Card, Butera, Giallonardo, Turner, and Theriault capable of playing back.

Justin Bowers. Previous teams – Woodstock Slammers. Justin comes to the Tommies full of promise and accolades. You can’t help but be impressed with his 2005-06 season in Woodstock where he was the league’s top point guy, 1st team all-star, and MVP. If he can carry over that momentum into the AUS short season, we may be looking at a point a game guy. That may be a tall order to fill, especially in his first year, but nobody can say the potential isn’t there.

Ryan Murphy. Previous teams - Lewiston MAINEiacs, Grand Prairie Storm, and Saint John Sea Dogs. According to the Sea Dogs website Ryan was a victim of numbers last fall when he was cut from the QJMHL team. Ryan landed on his feet in Alberta but ended up back in the Maritimes and played 20 games for Saint John. Where ever he goes he appears to be well thought of and liked. His size should be helpful in the AUS and he is a great addition to the team.

Ian Turner. Previous teams – Kingston Frontenacs, London Knights, Richmond Renegades, Reading Royals, and Saint John Scorpions. Ian brings a lot of experience to the Tommies defense. With 3 years of pro hockey under his belt, the change to the AUHC should be an easy transition for this rookie. His stats seem to indicate a defensive defenseman that worries about things in his own end first. This bodes well for the penalty kill and even strength play. We will see how Coach Eagles employs him in offensive situations.

AUGUST 11th, 2006. More New Recruits?

The following was posted yesterday on the Grand Prairie Storms official website.

“Another former Storm goaltender-forward combination has headed even further east.

Forward Kevin Hamel was in the Storm lineup for 57 games last season. He scored 31 goals and added 32 assists while netminder Guillaum Miszczak came to Grande Prairie late in the season taking part in 29 games, recording seven wins, three losses and two ties and a 2.44 goals against average.

Both of them will be playing with the St. Thomas Tommies of the Atlantic University Sport conference in Federiction, N.B. Former Storm Jean Bourbeau (2001-2004) has played with the Tommies the last two seasons.”

In other Tommies news, it has been confirmed that the team will be taking part in the Fall Classic Tournament at UNB on September 29 and 30th. The schedule has been updated accordingly.

AUGUST 10th, 2006. New Recruit...Correction.

We incorrectly reported that Matt Davis was a forward from the London Knights. While that is true, that Matt Davis will not be playing for the Tommies this fall. Matt Davis a goaltender, who played for the Saint John Scorpions last year, will be playing for the Tommies. Welcome Matt!!

JULY 15TH, 2006. TOMMIES 2006-07 SCHEDULE.

Here is the scoop on the Tommies 2006-07 schedule. The only dates that are 100% correct are those against the Squirrels. UNB has listed their 2006-07 schedule on their official web site. From this, we were able to guess all the games against the Nova Scotia AUS teams, based on previous seasons and some common sense. I.e. - Tommies home, Squirrels on the road and vice versa. The games against UPEI and U de M are a little more difficult to decipher, so there is some question as to the accuracy of the dates. PLEASE, DO NOT make plans around the schedule posted here, I am sure there are errors, which will be corrected as the other schools start posting their schedules. With information from UNB website.

MAY 22nd, 2006.

Rumor has it that Coach Eagles has landed a top recruit. The 2005-06 Maritime Jr. A Hockey Leagues’ leading scorer, all-star, and MVP has apparently agreed to play for the Tommies in 2006-07. This has not been confirmed, so it’s only gossip until the Coach releases his new players.

MAY 10th, 2006.

Fresh from the AUS website. http://www.atlanticuniversitysport.com/news/060509.php

New overtime format for men's and women's hockey:

Atlantic University Sport has adopted a new overtime format for both the men's and women's hockey regular season. In men's hockey, teams tied at the end of regulation will play a 10-minute (4-on-4) overtime period, followed by a shoot-out where three players from each team will participate. In women's hockey, the overtime will be a 5-minute period of 4-on-4 play followed by a five-player shootout. In both cases, if the game is still tied following the shootout, a sudden-death shootout will then take place. Teams tied at the end of regulation play will receive a single point in the standings while the winning team will receive the extra point. The overtime format for playoffs remains unchanged.

Men's hockey playoff format for 2006-07 adjusted:

For 2006-07, the men's hockey playoff format will see the semifinals move to a best three-of-five series and the league final will be a best two-of-three series. The 2007 CIS Men's Hockey Championship will be hosted in Moncton and Atlantic University Sport will receive three berths in the championship (Host, conference champion and an assigned rotating berth). With the semifinal winners advancing automatically to the CIS championship, it is expected moving to a five-game series will add to the excitement and generate considerable interest as teams compete to extend their season. Also, should Moncton advance to the league final, a best two-of-three consolation series will take place between the semifinal losers to determine which team will receive the assigned rotating berth.

St. Thomas will host the 2007 women's hockey championship.

MAY 7th, 2006

Well folks a new season of Tommies hockey will be with us in 5 more months. Until then Coach Eagles is actively recruiting the new players which will take the Green and Gold to the promised land. This year 2 spots are available to AUS teams for the CIS Championship in Moncton, of course the Aigles Bleus will have an automatic bye since they are the host team, so 3 teams from the AUHC will compete for the University Cup.

A few teams in the league have started to announce their recruits for 06-07. To date the only known Tommie recruit is Ian Turner. Ian is a defenceman who had to sit out one year to regain his eligibility, after playing several years pro in the ECHL. Ian will bring a big defensive presence to the back end.

WELCOME IAN!
