Register Today for the LeRoy Washburn Golf Classic - August 14th

From the STU website:

Connect with old friends, raise money for student athletes, and show off your golf swing at the fourth annual LeRoy Washburn Golf Classic.

The tournament takes place on August 14 at the Mactaquac Provincial Park. The shotgun start is at 8 am. The day ends with a meal and awards banquet hosted at the Mactaquac Lodge.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to St. Thomas’ Millennium Bursary Fund, and will directly assist student athletes in financial need.

“It’s an excellent event,” said athletics director Mike Eagles. “The tournament brings the whole athletics department, alumni, supporters and sponsors together for a great day of golf and socializing.”

The tournament honours LeRoy Washburn, a longstanding athletics director at St. Thomas who continues to work on behalf of young athletes as a dedicated community volunteer. “LeRoy’s contributions to STU’s athletics programmes have been outstanding, and we are pleased to honour and thank him,” Eagles said.

Washburn said he’s pleased to be involved in the tournament. “It keeps our alumni together,” he said. “Alumni from other universities are also participating. A number of them played against each other when they were at university, and they’re now in the city working. The golf classic gives them a chance to spend a few hours with each other.”

St. Thomas Tommies' coach Mike Eagles, determined to rebound his program from a non-playoff season a year ago, is also looking south.

He echoes MacDougall's sentiments of the team-building aspect. "Players get to know one another when they're on the road and you want that heading into the season,'' says Eagles. "It's also about getting good competition early on.''
We also learn the date of this year's President cup game versus UNB.
As part of their exhibition schedule that begins playing UNB in the fourth annual President's Cup Game on Sept. 15

Swing and a miss with Beljo

Some very disheartening news in today's Daily Gleaner. Little else to add.
Left winger Jadran Beljo, announced in April as a top recruit and "the type of quality player and person that the Tommies are looking for," has had a change of heart and will pursue a job in the ECHL next season.

Tommies' coach Mike Eagles said he called Beljo Tuesday night to urge the 22-year-old sniper to consider course selections. That's when Beljo told him he had changed his mind.
