2012-2013 STU Men's Hockey Schedule

SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS:

The Tommies will open the new season on the road in Squirrel land facing UNB down the hill on Oct. 12th, while the new Grant*Harvey Centre home opener will be the following week hosting Acadia on Oct. 19th. The annual Lou Chabot Memorial game will be played Friday February 1st. The regular season wraps up on the road at UPEI Feb. 8th.

The schedule is a tad wonky this year with 16 games (including 9 home games) in the first half and 12 games in the second half.  This was probably in preparation for the World University games that were to be played early in 2013 but have been pushed forward to December of 2013.

Both the quarter-finals and finals in the AUS this year are Best 2-of-3 with the semi-finals a Best 3-of-5. The CIS championship will be in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and the two AUS finalists will earn a berth.

Tommies add to impressive recruiting class with Kenya Marcelline

The St. Thomas Tommies have announced that another forward will be joining the team for the 2012-13 season. Kenya Marcelline from Whitby, Ontario will be another big addition to the forwards for STU and will join previously recruited Kelty Apperson, Emily Francis, and Emily Ryan up front.

The Tommies, who finished sixth out of seven teams in the AUS last season for goals scored with 59, can certainly use the extra POP in the lineup. Marcelline was seventh in team scoring this past season for the Whitby Wolves of the PWHL, scoring 10 goals and 18 assists in 34 games. You can view her stats HERE.

In the press release by STU Athletics, Coach Murphy had this to say about Marcelline, "“Kenya comes to us from a very strong program in the PWHL. We are always looking to increase our grit and determination. I see Kenya having those characteristics, as well as great speed and a willingness to do what it takes for the team,”

“I was very pleased with everything I saw from her and look forward to seeing her here in September to help take our program to a new level.”

Welcome to St. Thomas Kenya!

Bissonnette moving on, Tommies look for assistant coach

Former Tommies player and current associate coach Eric Bissonnette is moving on.  After a one year stint Eric has decided to move on and focus on his own business.  The news of this happening was in today's Daily Gleaner.  Here is an excerpt.

The team will hire a part-time assistant coach for the upcoming season, who will be paid on a stipend basis.

“We’re very pleased with the progress the team made under Troy (Ryan) and Eric last year,” said Eagles. “We’re glad he’s staying on to continue to develop our junior Tommies program. Going forward, we’re going with a more traditional, stipend type approach for an assistant coach.”

Head coach Troy Ryan said there are no hard feelings, noting Bissonnette’s commitment to his fitness business Bizz Fitness played a role in the decision.

“He has a life, a family and a business to run,” said Ryan. “It’s a tough position, where we practice every afternoon. So he would probably have to hire someone on to run his business while we practice. He’d have to pay to be an assistant coach. It’s a tough situation to juggle them all.”

Ryan will now search for an assistant coach, and hopes to have the role filled as soon as possible.
We would like to wish Eric all the best and thank him sincerely for his time and commitment to the Green and Gold.   Best of luck in all your endeavors!

Tommies add defenseman Marc-Andre Levesque

The St. Thomas Tommies have added another piece to the rebuilding puzzle in the form of 6'2" defenseman Marc-Andre Levesque.  For the past two seasons Levesque has been playing for the PEI Rocket of the QMJHL and also played one year for the Rimouski Oceanic in 2009-10.

He is known as a no non-sense stay at home D-man that takes care of his own end of the ice first.  He was kept as an over-ager this past year to bring a veteran presence to a young hockey team.

With the addition of Marc-Andre and Jordan Thomas to the Tommies line-up this fall, Coach Ryan has filled the two vacancies on the blue line left by graduating seniors Andrew Andricopoulos and Bryan Main.

Welcome to St. Thomas!!

A quote from the Jamie Ross and the June 7th edition of the Daily Gleaner; "Ryan said Tommies forward Jon Bonneau was familiar with Levesque and had a helpful hand in recruiting him.

“A guy like Jon Bonneau, if he, after one year, can speak highly of the program and the city, and how he’s been treated here, and he’s telling a guy who trusts him, that goes a long way. It goes further than if I were trying to oversell it to him.”

Ryan said Levesque is serious about getting an education, and felt the small campus at St. Thomas would suit his interests and somewhat shy personality.

He expects Levesque to have an immediate impact on the Tommies’ back end, saying he will assume a top-four role right away.

He also lauded the 20-year-old’s attitude, saying his lack of ego made him all the more appealing.

“There’s no baggage with him,” Ryan said. “He’s a good person and a good player. He wants to be at school. He’s not sitting around, waiting for a pro team to scoop him up.
