Tommies on life support after loss to SMU

The Tommies faint playoff hopes took another hit tonight as STU lost to the Saint Mary's Huskies 5-2. With the loss, coupled with Dalhousie's loss to UNB this evening, the Tommies are still mathematically alive but with an extremely weak pulse.

Kenton Dulle opened the scoring at 8:07 with a shorthanded breakaway goal. SMU evened the score on the same powerplay at 8:36. The Huskies out shot the Tommies 14-10 in the first.

The Huskies Patrick O'Keefe scored the only goal of the second period at 5:09. It was 2-1 for SMU after two periods and STU was out shot 14-8.

Things got worse in the third with 3 consecutive Huskies' goals at 3:33, 7:59 and 11:42 to increase the lead to 5-1. Devan Praught gave the Tommies something to cheer about with his goal at 17:03 but it was too little, too late, as St. Thomas dropped the game 5-2. Final shots on goal were 41-27.

The Tommies are four points back of Dalhousie heading into the final weekend with Acadia and Saint Mary's on the road. STU needs four points and needs the Tigers and Les Aigles Bleus to go pointless in their final two games. DG: STU in need of a miracle

  2. Low blow Oilslick...Low Blow.....BUT, at least we are not in the Taylor Hall sweepstakes, we are in the playoffs hunt.

  3. the silly part of all this is that the three pathetic teams at the bottom of the heap, literally only have to win one game in the last five or six to make the play-offs and none of them can do it??? what is sillier still is that STU could win an AUS championship by sliding into six spot and getting hot with goaltending and players stepping up!

    ReplyDelete
  4. here is hoping to slide in and get hot.hot goaltending would be part of the answer, but a power play that went from being out chanced to productive would be a game changer.this team has some individual skill, but they need an adam oates type forward and another defenseman on the pp.

  5. I did not mean that in bad way Video guy.I was just letting you know they were losing.
STU could make it and then surprize everyone in the playoffs.

  8. "That was me," Eagles admitted. "If we're going to take a bench, it better be me."

So, a lack of discipline from the coach is acceptable.... at least according to the coach.

  9. That last quote is a strange contrast to what he said the night before.

Ever see a team quit on a coach? Sure looked like it in the third period Saturday night.

Can't be that undisciplined and expect to win this weekend.

  10. Surley everybody is seeing the real Eagles with his latest comment regarding the taking of penalties, what is good for the goose is,I guess, not good for the gander.
This team has quit on the coach long before thia last weekend and it is not understandable to me that`school authorities have not addressed this matter,it should be evident to everyone that Eagles cannot handle either job and relieving him of just the coaching job will in fact exaserbate the situation even further;Administration is being neglectfull in not addressing this situation ,again Mike Eagles is the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time.

  12. STU Fan, please say something of relevance. Like, about the game. Same old broken record. Learn hockey and team management,

Iceman, like i said in the girls thread, not out of it just yet. i really believe in my heart of hearts that UNB will lose in the CIS finals to Alberta.

  13. Thanks Video Guy. That will inprove STU hockey....UNB losing to Alberta i mean. Doesn't that even mean we suck more at STU. I mean, we can't compete in a league that isn't even the best in the country???? I'll take supid comments for 100 dollars Alex.

  14. just my opinion. No need to flame me. Plus, i already said what i think STU needs to do to improve. I was just trying to stir the UNB people on this site to jump to the defense of their team. hook, line and sinker.

  17. so, i guess the blog post was an attack against video guy. Just another keyboard warrior talking tough because his team was dissed by a lesser team.

  18. I think we need to get real here. I am not a big fan of UNB games, because they are one sided. Stu and UNB used to be an all out war. I had season tickets to both teams, now I pick and choose. STU has to turn around it's program, UNB needs to maintain theirs. UNB cut programs from atheletics, Ladies hockey was one of them. STU is willing to pay huge dollars to maintain varsity hockey, at any cost. STU needs to rebrand their program, thus something new is needed. Some say it is a new AD, some say a new coach, some say both, others say we ned to find that one or two players who can turn it around for them. I think Mike is looking over his shoulder and just now realizing some of his mistakes. The squad and coaches do not have the essence of what it means to be a Tommie in their hearts. Maybe they can win two big games and bring joy to Mudville. Even so, we cannot recruit from the bottom of the pack unless we package a new product. I guess someone will just have to figure it out.

  19. Marketing, marketing, marketing, schmoozing, schmoozing, schmoozing - if they aren't your cup of tea, coaching in CIS is not necessarily the best job for you.

That being said,Eagles himself didn't make Dulle and Dietrich take selfish penalties at critical times on weekend - they did that all by themselves!

    Character wins.

    ReplyDelete
  20. to be honest, Dulle didnt deserve the 10 minute in the Acadia game. He was skating to the bench.

  21. Character wins, but talent gets you to the dance in the first place.

Lack of discipline, selfish penalties, true. One can only wonder whether those players wouldn't maintain composure if they felt like they had something worth playing for, or a coach that didn't berate them at every turn.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't see what is meant that Dulle didn't deserve the penalty, the western warriors have been taking dumb penalties all season and getting a pat on the back by being returned to the ice and never missing a shift, if a UNB player took a penalty like the ones STU players have been taking, they would never see a shift again that game and the rest of the players would suffer at practice.

    ReplyDelete
  23. he didnt deserve it because he didnt say anything to the offical. The one time the WWL is innocent.

One person said that if it happened to UNB, they wouldnt see another shift....they have like a whole other team to take that players spot, STU dosent. Depth dude, depth. Of course there is accountablity that is needed, but its easier with UNB.

  24. Lets be realistic here for a change, having 1 goalie, maybe 2 d-men and 3 forwards does not a team make, too many players are lacking the required talent to compete and are being put in overexpectant positions and then don't measure up are berated by both and coaches, and who has been responsable for the collection of these players, well Mr Eagles exclusively, the Gleaner article this AM points out Eagles lack of ability to meaningfully utilize the resources out there,he alone maked recruiting decisions which by and large have been lacking;therehave been dozens of players who were recruited with highest expectations and failed miserably, overexpectant evaluations by Eagles and then with the accumulation of frustration of finding themselves in that situation overflows with the taking of dumb penalties, that great coaching tool dicipline is applied and from the coach who is responsable for recruiting them in the 1st place.Having NHL experience is not the total answer for being a good AUS coach, the most important is recruitment, recruitment, recruitment,a job that Mike Eagles has clearly documented that he incapable of doing and will not let anybody else do.
The writng has been on the wall for some time and Eagles persists in not getting the job done and has alienated most if not all those who over the years have contributed so much, this long list of failed recruits also have left the program with no degree ,are we not an institution of higher learning? and has not Eagles 8 year leadership been an abject failure?Eagles continues to pusue his failed recruitment strategy to what we now see on the ice ie not enough quality talent and too few who do who are expected to succeed with just not enough talent;Eagles must go and a concentrated recruitment effort by those who know how must get underway immediately,

  25. I don't disagree with the blogger above but there is a larger problem. The team won't play for him, the way they have to, and new players don't want to play for him. How many players have brought friends in recent years? Answer...not enough. Serious trouble in Tommieland folks. Eagles may very well have many good qualities but university hockey coach is not one of them. STU can't wait forever to do something.

  26. I wonder if this period in time will be looked at historically as the "Eagles era" similiar to how UNB looks at its "Nicholchuk era"?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lack of leadership, not just from the administrative side, but also from a player side as well! Dietrich never worked at UNB from what I hear because of attitude and locker room presence. So there are alot of problems here, but the change has to start somewhere, and the fact of the matter is Change will and has to start at the top then down, not from the water boy up.

  28. After reading these posts i thought I would share a review of a past player . I think Mike Eagles is the hardest working coach out there . I beleive that he is a great coach and also doing a great job as AD . Team is improving and they have some great young guys in there this year and lets be serious you can not judge the tommies the same way as UNB. When a team hosts nationals ever couple year they are going to get top notch players. Mike was my coach for 4 years and i have never seen a guy more prepared for games and practices. I hope to see Mike behind the bench at STU for a long time as he is going to be hard to replace with his nhl experience and his work ethic and his drive to make guys better and WIN. Yes I said win , Mike wants to win more then anyone else. STU is lucky to have a coach and AD with Mike Eagles .Ask 99 % of the guys who played for Mike and all will say the same thing about Mike's work ethic , preperaion , and the respect the guys have for him . STU has always been a hard working blue collar team , so I thinkit is crazy not to have a guy who worked so hard for everything he got in hockey . ( 853 career NHL Games ).
