Panthers scratch away at Tommies playoff hopes

With a play off position slowly slipping from their grasp the Tommies couldn't get the needed W on PEI. The Panthers took the game 5 to 2.

The only goal in the first period was scored on the PP at 9:22 by Chad Locke. Corey Banfield rang one off the post during a PP but STU could not capitalize on three man advantages in the period. Shots were 11 to 7 for UPEI.

Matt Carter scored early in the 2nd period on the PP and Thomas Waugh at 16:47 for a 3 to 0 Panthers lead. Brad Gallant narrowed the lead 21 seconds later on a nice pass from Wes Welcher and Andrew Estey. Shots on goal were 13 to 12 for UPEI.

The third period saw Corey Banfield, who was back in the line-up for the first time since before Christmas, score at 17:30 to reduce the deficit to one. Trying to tie the game late, STU pulled Charles Lavigne, and it back fired with 2 empty netters by UPEI at 18:26 and 19:58.

St. Thomas still have a chance to catch Dalhousie but the task does not get any easier as Acadia and Saint Mary's are in town this weekend. Daily Gleaner: Tommies hopes take a hit

  1. Done. Finished. Over. Dead Men Skating.

I am a season pass holder and STU alumnus and have supported this team for a number of years. However, I have decided to join many of my fellow past supporters and I will not return until Mike Eagles is let go or resigns his post.

Thank you Mr. Eagles for all of your hard work over the past 8 years. Your effort and commitment to STU has been undeniable. However, it is apparent that you are no longer the person to lead and grow the program.

  2. Season isint over yet, but losing isint an option. Easier said than done with a home and home weekends with 2 nationally ranked teams. Luckily, SMU and Acadia have struggled recently, so if there is a time, the time is now. I havent given up hope for this squad until its mathematically unable too. I hope everyone does the same, but probably not.

On the plus side, Dietrich is back this weekend.

  6. The fallacy here is that those who dare to be critical aren't fans of the team. We aren't trying to bring down the program. We're hoping for a solution after years of mediocrity. We're critical because we love this team, our school. We are PROUD TOMMIES and refuse to sit by silently while the reputation of OUR school is tarnished. We believe that a hockey, or any other, program that is worth having is worth equipping with the tools to pursue excellence. It is a slap in the face to those who have worn the jersey with pride in years gone by to allow the status quo to remain.

  8. In 1987/88 UNB was 3-22-1. I never thought the team would ever be successful again. Then Mike Johnston came to town, followed by Mike Kelly, Tom Coolan and now Gardiner. Each year it got better to what we have now.

I agree that these changes came from having new coaches at the healm, but I have no comment or suggestion as to Mike's coaching. My point is, programs can turn around.

Being a UNB fan I would love to see STU return to the competative ranks. There were some great games in the 90s.

  9. im sure UNB would love to have everyone forget how futile they once were.

I heard a great comment the other day on ESPN sports radio talking about the Nets and Raptors game, and the one analyst says "we all knew Toronto was going to win, but thats why you play the game, to see if one team can beat the other team"

So what if the Tommies are 4 points back, thats why you play the game to see if they can get there.
