Tommies finish opening weekend with a split

The Tommies went into Charlottetown looking for a perfect weekend but had to settle for the split after the UPEI Panthers spanked them 9 to 4. The Panthers scored 3 first period goals to chase Charles Lavigne and would show Ben MacFarlane the same treatment scoring 3 more in the second and third periods.

The WWL (Wild West Line) of Dulle, Reich, and Dietrich were on the ice for three of the Tommies four goals. Tyler Dietrich (a great weekend) had 2 goals with Scott Judson (1 G & 1 A) and Max Chamberland picking up the others. Kenton Dulle had three assists with Mike Reich and Corey Banfield each getting one.

UPEI's defenceman Dylan Quale and forward Matthew Carter each had big nights with 5 points a piece.

A little concern late in the third as Tyler Dietrich was caught on the wrong side of an illegal hit (penalty called on the play) and was slow getting up. We hope he is alright. The Tommies played most of the 2nd half of the game down two defencemen as Andrew Andricopoulos and David Crossman were both assessed game misconducts.

In Ladies play from this evening, the Tommies lost 2 to 1 against the Dalhousie Tigers. Scoring STU's lone goal was Jillian Coughlin.

Last night the Ladies fell 5 to 1 to the ST-FX X-Women.

Both Tommies teams will come back to Fredericton and regroup for next weekend's action.

  1. tough loss tonite, but we got a split on the road and there is nothing wrong with coming home with at least 2 points. Especially winning at the JLL, a place with zero history of any wins. Hopefully the boys have a good week at practice and come out guns blazing in the home opening weekend against X and Dal, 2 teams we have had success against.

  2. There is lots of history of wins at the JLL..just from before you and Mike came along...Learn the real STU history.

  3. okay, i should have said recent history. I do know we were good before I came, look at the banners and the team was led by Jason Sands, who is from my hometown.

  4. I'm a little concerned about the UPEI loss. Especially after they got spanked by UNB for 9 goals. The UNB rink is not worth going to. They seem to be in a different league.

  5. Actually, it was 10 goals.

  6. The rink is not worth going to??
Come and take notes, boys. Apparently, you're still on a bit of a learning curve.

  7. all I am saying is that to pay the price to watch UNB hammer two teams like they did to PEI and Moncton is not worth it. Neither one was a hockey game. It is nice to see a local team win, but c'mon. Neither was much more than a father son game, and in that light, i worry that STU guys will need to pick it up after the loss to UPEI.

  8. Yes - the lop-sided wins might keep fans away from the AUC, but you have to put it in perspective. It's early in the season, and I can see a couple of other teams being more competitive than those faced this weekend.

  9. I am glad that this is the first of the season and not the end.
To win the first game and then go to PEI and lose that bad.Hopefully this weekend will be a 4 pointer.

  10. I am really surprised at how Moncton has weakened in their play. I thought they would be in the top three.

  11. Well I certainly didn't think they were going to be the team they were 2 or 3 years ago (or even last year) as, IMO, out of all the teams in the AUS I think they may be the one who improved the least since last year...but I did expect a bit more than what they showed this past weekend...

  12. I wonder when the new rink will come on line for the tommies. I heard a lot of comments that people would sooner watch STU, but the seating made them select season passes for the AUC.
