Pre-season: Tommies fall to $quirrels

The Tommies got off to a good start tonight in Woodstock, but couldn't hold back a $quirrel surge, dropping a 10-4 decision in the "Battle for Abby" game.

STU jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of a pair of goals by Brad Gallant. Jason Rinzler added his second goal of the pre-season. But the $quirrels would charge back with 3 goals of their own against starting netminder Ben Macfarlane to tie things up 3-3 after the first 20 minutes of play.

The $quirrels controlled the action in the 2nd period, taking the lead which they would not relinquish. Matt Foster scored for the Tommies, but it was 6-4 $quirrels after 2 periods. Matt Davis took over between the pipes for Macfarlane midway through the middle frame.

In the 3rd period the Tommies ran into penalty trouble and the $quirrels are potent with the man advantage. 4 unanswered goals in the third period sent the Tommies back home, suffering the loss by a final score of 10-4

  9. it was a good game overall, its only exhibiton so no need to jump on or off the bandwagon. The game showed the Tommies that they cant make stupid mistakes against a team like UNB. But all in all, UNB isint as powerful as they were last year. They wont run the table and go 26-1-1 again in the season. Plus the game was for a good cause and the 2 teams had dinner together afterwards.

  10. I agree, the Squirrels are not the team they were last year but as a couple of Acorn eaters mentioned to me last night, they don't have Todd or other possible recruits in the line-up yet.

The Tommies have lots to work on but they are heading in the right direction.

  11. Although any team regardless of talent would be hard pressed to repeat a 26-1-1 season, on paper this UNB team, is looking good for the long run.

Their defense will be much much improved this year with depth, talent and strength.

and theyre forwards are going to be fine as any year. The biggest lost of course being Hennigar, but they got a big Talent in Daine Todd coming this way, who if healthy will score 30+ if not 40pts this year, and a potential (secret) recruit, who had 90 something points in major junior last year, if he gets a contact offer decent enough he will stay pro if not hes coming to UNB, an he will be a good one

  12. MacFarlane looked good, it'll be nice having two decent goalies for a change. Soso looked slow, but I have a feeling the Tommies will be very tough to play in their own, small rink.

As for the Squirrels...They look even better this year. What they lost in Hennigar, they've added in depth. Clendenning and Cuddihy, are both top line talent in this league. They look bigger and tougher too. Guys like Bailey, Hodgson, and Henderson give them both the forward size they've never had in years past, and speed and skill to boot. Those 3 should build on strong rookies years and can only improve. Net result, Squirrel forwards are a bit stronger this year.

The big difference for them, their D looks about 30% better with 2 real nice pickups in Harty and Stamler. Wonder what they cost? Quite the upgrade over that rat Hepditch and deSouza who probably should never have made that team.

Yeomans and Fullerton aren't Ouzas, but their damn close. Fullerton was suppose to be the guy at Acadia I heard.

Wish I was wrong, but they look better to me this year. Won't win as many games, and won't blow out as many teams, but they're a tougher team now, 4 lines deep, with a good, not just average defence now. Built to play high-skilled teams.

If they land that Todd guy or another ringer, they're set.

As for STU - I think they can finish 5th this year, and I finally think they're building something for the long-term.

  13. I think STU would do better this year playing for the Senior League !!

  14. Harty and Stamler are both nice pickups by the Reds...Harty has some grit and jumps into the play well; Stamler is a great skater and puck mover...think an AUS version of Nick Lidstrom.

  15. I'm callin' him So-Slow Soso!

These Tommies will definitely be underdogs this season and hopefully they embrace the challenge and make the playoffs ...
