Tommies drop opener to Axemen

A strong effort by Jon Groenheyde wasn't enough for STU as three third period goals propelled the Acadia Axemen past the Tommies 3 to 1.  Two of the three Acadia goals were on the powerplay as time and time again STU was forced to defend shorthanded.

The Tommies struck first as rookie D-man Jordan Moore (Thomas, Childerley) squeaked one past the Acadia goalie at 15:22 of the opening period.  STU had the only power play in the period but were out shot 22 to 11.

In the second frame the refs went to work and awarded 8 minutes of PP time to Acadia.  Jonny G stood his ground and made some amazing saves to keep the game at 1 - 0 heading to the third.  Shots were 21 to 6 in the period.

The third saw the calls continue to go in Acadia's favour.  Brett Thompson would score at 6:13 on the PP and again at 7:17 to see Acadia surge ahead.  Another Acadia PP goal at 18:46 sunk any chance of a STU comeback.  The Tommies finally got their second powerplay of the game with 42 seconds left to play.  Final shots were 58 to 23 for the Axemen.

The Tommies will head to Halifax tomorrow night and tangle with the Dalhousie Tigers at 7PM from the Halifax Forum.  The game can be seen live at www.AUStv.ca
