Meet the new Tommies - Brian Soso

From the Tommies' official website:
Brian Soso joins the Tommies for the 2008-09 season, after a five year junior career in Ontario. Brian is a big strong right winger that has the ability to score, as well as play an aggressive style of game. This past season with the Newmarket Hurricanes Brian had 33 goals and 30 assists in 42 games. Brian played four seasons in the OHL, his last one with the Kitchener Rangers in 06-07 under new Florida Panthers coach Peter DeBoer.
Brian was drafted into the OHL in the 2nd round, 37th overall of the 2003 Midget Draft by the Windsor Spitfires (the Tommies' Jason Cassidy was drafted 76th overall in the same draft by the Brampton Battalion) after playing his minor hockey with the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League. Brian spent his overage season with Newmarket of the OHA (JrA) where he demonstrated his scoring touch with 33 goals in just 42 games.

As an example of Brian's potential entering the Ontario Hockey League, he was drafted ahead of the Edmonton Oilers' Andrew Cogliano (54th), the Boston Bruins' Phil Kessel (62nd), the Ottawa Senators' Nick Foligno (84th), and fellow AUS newcomers Jhase Sniderman of UPEI (85th) and St. F-X's Phil Mangan (120th). Cause for optimism, indeed.

No stranger to the rough stuff, Brian racked up 341 PIM's in 135 GP in his final two OHL seasons. This being the AUS, we may not see much pugilism from Brian, but here's an example of him acquitting himself well against Jared Boll. Yes, that Jared Boll, who led the NHL in fighting majors last season:

Welcome to the Tommies, Brian and Good Luck!

Meet the new Tommies - Mitch Price

From the official Tommies' site:
Mitch comes to the Tommies by way of the Woodstock Slammers in the MJAHL. This past season Mitch played 56 games and had 28 goals and 25 assists for 53 points. He is a good skater with a lot of upside. The Tommies are looking forward to having Mitch wear the "Green and Gold".
Fredericton hockey fans will be familiar with Mitch, having skated in the local system eventually starring with the Fredericton Midget AAA Canadiens. Mitch is listed as a 6 ft 187 lb right winger who will be 21 when the season gets underway. Mitch broke into the junior ranks as the property of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan (QMJHL) getiing into one game before being claimed in the 2005 expansion draft by the Saint John Sea Dogs. He got a look from the Sea Dogs, but found his place in the MJAHL where he scored 66 goals over 3 seasons with the Woodstock Slammers.
Interesting Fact: Mitch holds the NBPEIMMHL (Midget AAA) record for most game winning goals in a single season, with 8.
Welcome to the Tommies, Mitch, and Good Luck!

...the kind of example an athlete should strive to be...

From Bill Hunt in today's Daily Gleaner regarding the hiring of Mike Eagles as STU (interim) athletic director. Specifically...

It's been an exhausting round of "Work. Sleep. Repeat" over the last couple of weeks, but while spending too much time in the office, I have observed:

That the hiring of Mike Eagles as athletic director at STU was, and will turn out to be, a good move. And by the standards of academia, which usually moves at glacier-like speed in the decision-making process, a quick one.

The Tommies program needs someone to have their hand on the tiller as they steer into a new season. And Eagles is a smart man and a hard-working man and the kind of example an athlete should strive to be.

There's more interesting stuff there, including some wise counsel regarding the future home of the Tommies, so check out the full story.

2008 - 2009 Schedules Released

The countdown to next season has officially begun with the release of the 2008 - 2009 hockey schedules.
Of note:
  • The Men's squad open their season on the road Friday, October 17th at Moncton, while the home opener will be Saturday, October 18th as the UPEI Panthers come to town. The Men wrap up their regular season by visiting the Panthers in Charlottetown Saturday, February 14th. How many relationships will be put at risk that night with potentially important matchups?
  • The Lady Tommies host the Aigles Bleu for their season opener on Thursday, October 16th. The women will finish the regular season on Saturday, February 28th at Mount Allison. This year's championship tourney takes place March 6th - 8th at UPEI.
  • The Lou Chabot Memorial Game will take place on Wednesday, February 4th, 7:00 pm at the LBR.
Also, nice to see the AUS has corrected the nonsensical playoff format on the men's side. The last two seasons, the quarterfinals were best-of-3, followed by a best-of-5 semifinal, then reverting back to a best-of-3 final. This season, both the quarterfinals and semifinals will be a best-of-3 format, with the AUS champion determined by a best-of-5 final series.

See the complete AUS Hockey Schedules for the Men's and Women's teams.

Still no word on a broadcaster for the upcoming season.

Eagles takes over as head of STU athletics

What better way to kick off the new site than with some big Tommies news? Men's Hockey head coach Mike Eagles has been named interim athletic director at St. Thomas University, replacing the departed Jennifer Myers who leaves to assume the AD position at York University. Eagles will remain as head coach of the Tommies men.
The Daily Gleaner's Bill Hunt has the complete story.

2007 - 2008 Season Recap

FROM THE ORIGINAL STUTOMMIES.COM ARCHIVES
Editor's Note: External Links are no longer active in this post.

June 14th, 2008. DISAPPOINTING! Bowers moving on early.

Tommie fans had heard the rumors but today it was confirmed. Justin Bowers has signed a deal in the ECHL for 08-09 and won’t be back with the team. A great guy on and off the ice he will certainly be missed. Good luck with your new endeavors Justin, you’ll be missed. DG Article

May 28th, 2008. New recruits coming.

Sorry for the extended absence but I have been away and haven’t been minding the fort. Most of you probably already know that the Tommies have landed forward Mitch Price and goalie Ben MacFarlane from the Woodstock Slammers of the MJAHL. You can rest assured that Coach Eagles is out there pounding the pavement looking for other high end talents for the upcoming year.

Positive Hits is no longer the official broadcaster for Tommies hockey but don’t worry folks we’ll be listening to Tommies hockey this fall. Have faith, just because one radio station has no long term vision of success it doesn’t mean another won’t.

April 4th, 2008. Lady Tommies announce new recruits.

Coach Murphy has announced a couple of new recruits for the 2008-2009 season. Included in the group is FHS standout Kayla Blackmore and former UNB player Alexis Laird. STORY Ha ha UNB dropped women’s hockey, isn’t that just great. This is truly UNBlievable, I have always preached they were Squirrels and this proves it. There are no bigger sneaks in this world then a Squirrel. I really feel for the Ladies that lost there place to play but I don’t expect UNB to bring back the Ladies game because the so called “men” who made the decision have brains the size of an acorn. Dumb ass Squirrels.

Tommies 07/08 in review by Bill Hunt.

March 12th, 2008. Three Tommies get AUS All-Star nod.

Matt Davis, Anthony Butera and Justin Bowers were selected to the 2007-08 AUS 2nd team all-stars. All three had tremendous seasons and were huge contributors to the overall success of the team. Someone else who deserves a little credit is Jeff Bateman. He led the Tommies with an amazing 1.8 PPG this season scoring 23 points in just 13 games and also +/- with a +11. To all our all-stars, thanks and congratulations. AUS Story.

March 2nd, 2008. Squirrels bring Tommies season to a close.
Tommies 1 - Squirrels 5. Game 3 AUS Semi Finals.

The big red rodent machine was to much of a force this year and the Tommies had to concede defeat to their bitter rivals. Wave after wave of tree rats exacted a toll on the lunch pail workers from St Thomas.

The Squirrels had built a 3 - 0 lead by the mid way point of the first period as they sucked the life from STU like the meat from an acorn. Late in the period Corey Banfield came close as he rang one off the post on a clear cut breakaway.

As the second period started the Tommies pulled Matt Davis for Guillaume Miszczak hoping to find a spark. It worked for a time as Justin Roy salted one behind the UNB netminder at 4:22 with assists to Jeremy Turgeon and Ryan Card. The Tommies would get no closer on this night as UNB scored one late in the second and another in the third.

While there is little solace in losing to the tree rats the Tommies dedication and hard work didn’t go unnoticed. It was an exciting year of Tommies hockey and the team has so much to build from for next season. To all the graduating players a HUGE round of thanks goes out to you. To Mike Eagles and his staff a job well done, your hard work was noted and appreciated. To all the behind the scene folks that chipped in, who bleed Green and Gold all year, thanks for everything. Extra special thanks to Randy Corey at Positive Hits 96.5 FM for carrying all the games and the dedication you showed to St. Thomas. DG Story 03/03

THANK YOU TOMMIE FANS, IT’S BEEN A GREAT 07-08. IT GOES BY SO QUICKLY.

February 29th, 2008. Tommies shall continue to fight the evil Tree Rats.
Tommies 4 - Squirrels 5. Game 2 AUS Semi Finals.

Heart I tell you, all heart. If you leave it out there on the ice there will be no complaints about it, and the
St. Thomas Tommies gave the Squirrels a run for their money. Lucky for our UNB friends they had a UNB alumnus refereeing the game tonight, how convenient. With a strong team like UNB you don’t have to give them breaks but if you do, it will cost...oh it will cost.

Tonight at a well packed LBR the Squirrels were first on the board with a PP marker at 8:17. The Tommies replied on their own man advantage over two minutes later when Justin Bowers tallied from Giallonardo and Butera. Ryan Murphy pushed STU ahead at 13:51 on a breakaway just as a penalty to Justin Roy expired with the only assist going to Jean Bourbeau. The lead would be short lived as Erick Tremblay took a bizarre penalty for interference (interference, what the $@%# ??? ) and of course UNB scored. 2 -2 tie after one.

In the second frame nobody scored and UNB certainly held the territorial advantage but Matt Davis was up to the task of keeping them at bay. The third started out on a powerplay for STU but soon turned into an advantage for the Squirrels, as the Tommies found themselves two men short. The Squirrels scored on the 5 on 3 and the following 5 on 4 to take a 4 to 2 lead. Things were looking bleak but Justin Bowers, who played one heck of a gutsy game, rushed in and scored a beauty from Jean Bourbeau at 10:14. The Squirrel netminder didn’t like that much and gave Justin the butt end of his goalie stick as a reward that cost him a 4 minute penalty. The Tommies scored early in the PP to tie the game at 4 and bring full life back into the crowd. Giallonardo from Seymour and Chamberland teamed up on the goal at 10:45. As the last minute ticked away on the third period a UNB defenseman jumped up into the play and fired a screamer past a shocked Matt Davis for the eventual winner. Try as they might in the last 45 seconds, the Tommies were not able to get the equalizer. It was a gutsy effort tonight and it was a fun game. Thanks. The Tommies are down to a one game at a time series now and will face-off against UNB Sunday night at the Aitken Centre. 7 PM start time. DG Article 03/01

February 28th, 2008. Today in Tommies History.

Kyle McAlister scored the winning goal in overtime against UNB to send the AUS Semi-Final to a third and deciding game. The final score was 2 to 1. This is the last time that the Tommies defeated UNB at the Aitken Centre. The date was February 28th, 2003. 02/29 DG Articles

DAVE RITCHIE ARTICLE FEB. 26TH, 2008. READ FIRST BEFORE CONTINUING.

Let’s start this editorial by saying that AUS hockey fans in Fredericton are lucky to have quality print media guys like Dave Ritchie, Bill Hunt and Bruce Hallihan. Whether you like what they write is irrelevant, it’s the fact that we have it to read in the first place that’s important. Not many CIS hockey programs get the local media attention that UNB and STU receive, so count your blessings. I for one am very thankful to the Gleaner staff as they certainly augment this website with material and my pitiful attempts at writing.

In Dave’s recent column he speaks about how the Battle of the Hill has lost the intensity it once had. Well let’s be honest, Fredericton fans are either a fickle bunch or very discriminating. They want a winner at all costs and a hard working, lunch pail toting, .500 team doesn’t suit their fancy.

Nobody was complaining in November of 2006 when the 10 and 2 Tommies rolled into the Aitken Centre to face the 8 and 4 UNB Team. There was buzz and the place sold out. They came to watch local boys like Matt Seymour and St Nick Theriault play against local kids like Josh Hepditch and Rob Pearce. The Squirrels worked their home ice advantage to perfection and spilled Tommie blood to the tune of 3 to 0 that night. I’ll be the first to admit the current year Tommies do not have the so called “skill” of last year but they make up for it in heart. To bad that doesn’t sell here because only wins will do that.

The rivalry will never be dead (I’m not insinuating that anyone said that either) but it will fade from time to time as each team is in different stages of building. It certainly won’t take much to spark interest in it at any given point. If STU is able to do the unthinkable and beat the Squirrels the next two games, the luster will be renewed and both sets of fans will flock back like crazy. Hey, I’m not STUpid….Squirrels are!

February 26th, 2008. Squirrels draw first blood, down Tommies.
Tommies 1 - Squirrels 5. Game 1 AUS Semi Finals.

They weren’t ranked number one in the country all season by accident and tonight proved nothing that wasn’t already known, the Squirrels are big, fast, and good. That being said, the bigger they are - the harder they fall. Nobody on this side of the battle field is giving in and the battle will continue on Friday.

Tonight at the cesspool known as the Aitken Centre, the Tommies fell victims to a solid group of Squirrels. UNB jumped out to 2 - 0 lead in the first period. Justin Bowers came close to cutting the lead in half late in the period on a 2 man advantage but fanned on the puck at the side of the net.

The Tommies did score next at 4:04 of the second when Jean Bourbeau deflected a Justin Bowers shot past the UNB goaltender. Matt Seymour collected the other assist. The Squirrels scored one more in the period to regain the 2 goal cushion and would add 2 more in the third to pull away. Jean Bourbeau got hit in the head by a rising puck and for awhile it look serious but Jean was back for his next shift. That’s Tommie toughness right there. In the third period Jean drew the assignment of shadowing the Squirrel’s top point guy and when Bourbs checked him, he went down in a heap and was able to draw a bogus penalty, plus a game misconduct to end Jean’s night.

Final shots on goal favoured the Squirrels 49 to 18. Matt Davis was strong in goal and kept STU in it. The Battle switches to the LBR on Friday night at 7 PM. Come out and cheer on our Tommies. DG STORY 02/27

UPDATE: DG STORIES 02/26

February 24th, 2008. Bring on the Squirrels, Tommies blank X.
Tommies 4 - X-Men 0. Game 3 AUS Quarter Finals.

With the help of some timely goal scoring and Matt Davis standing huge in net, the Tommies are heading to a semifinal showdown with UNB. STU built a 2 - 0 lead in the first period that the team would never relinquish. The game was chippy by times but St. Thomas stayed composed with their eyes firmly on the prize of winning tonight’s game.

Matt Seymour played an awesome game and started the scoring at 2:05 of the first period from Bowers and Crossman It was Matt’s first of three points on the night and for a second it looked like he juggled the pass but he regained control just in time to roof it passed the X goalie. With less than 2 minutes to play in the period, Matt got goal number 2 from Bourbeau and Bowers. This set X off in the wrong direction and shortly thereafter one of their players would take a 5 minute match penalty that would haunt them early in the next period.

The Tommies started off the second frame on a 4 on 3 disadvantage but were able to kill it off and get their own man advantage from the left over time on the 5 minute match. Corey Banfield made X pay on the PP with a nifty pass by none other than Matt Seymour with Ryan Lehr collecting the other helper.

STU really threw a wrench into ST FX’s comeback hopes at the 57 second mark of the third when Jason Cassidy made a beautiful rush and collected the goal with assists to Keith Wynn and Ryan Card. Speaking of Ryan Card, he played a tremendous game especially on the PK. The ref tried to help X back into the game by calling three successive penalties on STU, resulting in an extended 5 on 3, but the PK unit and Matt Davis were up to the call. Matt made 39 saves for the shutout win, many while shorthanded. STU fired 30 at X. The Tommies will now faceoff against UNB on Tuesday night at the AUC. Game time 7 PM. DG ARTICLE Schedule and tickets.

February 22nd, 2008. Tommies come home for Game #3.
Tommies 2 - X-Men 4. Game 2 AUS Quarter Finals.

The tale of the tape this evening was the Tommies ineffectiveness on the powerplay going 0 for 8 with the man advantage. With 4 PP opportunities in the third period alone and being down only a goal, STU was unable to capitalize.

The X-Men scored first at 5:20 of the opening period and out shot the Tommies 15 to 3. Anthony Butera tied the game at 3:09 of the second frame with assists to Ryan Card and Jason Cassidy. X reclaimed the lead with less than 50 seconds to play in second with the Tommies holding the shot advantage in the period 10 to 9.

The Tommies were foiled on 4 attempts on the PP before St FX took a 2 goal advantage at 15:25 of the third period. STU fought back when Paul Giallonardo fired the puck passed the X goalie to breathe life back into the team at 17:31. With Matt Davis looking to go to the bench for the extra man, X came down and fired one passed him at 18:36. Final shots on net were 30 to 25 favouring St Francis. The Tommies will head back to the LBR on Sunday night at 7PM looking to end the series at home. HCH Article

In other AUS action Moncton downed Acadia 7 to 2 setting up a Moncton/St. Mary’s semi final match with the winner of ST FX/STU taking on UNB starting Tuesday night.

The Lady Tommies lost a heartbreaker to Dalhousie 3 to 2 in women’s quarter final action at SMU.

February 20th, 2008. Tommies rock X in overtime.
Tommies 2 - X-Men 1. OT. Game 1 AUS Quarter Finals.

UPDATE: Matt Davis article.

STU started the AUS playoffs in fine fashion tonight with the ever so important home ice win. Mind you it wasn’t easy and the Tommies had a gut check between the third period and overtime. St. Thomas started things off well by scoring the first goal at 3:34 of period one on a perfect shot by Matt Seymour, assists to Bowers and Banfield. STU had several other near misses in the first and played well.

In the second period nobody scored but the territorial play favoured St FX. The one goal lead stood until 5:59 of the third period. With X pressing the Tommies coughed up the puck in their own zone leading to a hard shot that Matt Davis got a piece of but the bounce went high and just dropped over the goal line before Matt could get to it. The tie stood and forced the game to OT.

The team must have rallied in the short 3 minute intermission because the overtime was controlled by STU. Just before the goal was scored Matt Seymour made a nice play behind the net and was able to get out front for a shot. The X-Men goaltender saved it for a faceoff. Justin Bowers took the draw and won it back to Keith Wynn who sent a great pass to Erick Tremblay. Erick wound up and fired through traffic and BANG it was over. Tommies win. Matt Davis was solid in net getting the win while facing 37 shots. The Tommies fired 29 the other way.

The Tommies head to Antigonish on Friday night and will try to end it in enemy territory. Game time is 7 PM on Positive Hits 96.5. DG STORY

February 16th, 2008. Tommies roll passed Panthers into playoffs.
Tommies 6 - Panthers 5.

The Tommies did something tonight that many said couldn’t be done at the start of the season, home ice advantage in the 1st round of the AUS playoffs. So Tommie fans when these same people predict less than positive results in the playoffs, we know that our team can do it. Do STU believe in Miracles?

With the win tonight the Tommies clinch 4th place with 28 points, tied with ST FX. We have a better head to head record with 3 wins and one O/T loss versus the X-Men and hence we start the playoff quest on Wednesday night, 7PM at the LBR. In Charlottetown this evening it was deja vous from last night when the Panthers raced out to an early one nothing lead less then 30 seconds into the game. Once again the Tommies came back and scored three goals Max Chamberland (Bourbeau, Lobb), Matt Seymour (Cassidy, Bowers), and Anthony Butera (Cassidy, Roy) scored in the first.

PEI slimmed the margin to one early in second frame but Corey Banfield scored at 4:12 from Bowers and Seymour. Bowers actually started this play behind the Tommies net, making some nice moves in the neutral zone, before making a great pass and Corey making a beautiful deke for the goal. The Panthers scored shorthanded mid way through the period but STU replied on a 2 man advantage when Max Chamberland scored goal number 2 from Giallonardo and Butera.

STU began the third period on the PP and Matt Seymour got his second of the night at 1:01 from Butera and Giallonardo. (box score doesn’t say this but those are the 2 guys that passed the puck to Matt). UPEI scored 2 more times to make the score close but too little too late on this night. Matt Davis faced 35 shots for the win, while St. Thomas fired 28 the other way. As mentioned earlier, the Tommies come back to the LBR on Wednesday night to take on the St FX X-Men in game one of the 2007-08 AUS quarter finals. AUS Roundup from HCH.

n Ladies action from PEI, the Tommies completed the road sweep by beating the Panthers 4 to 3 in OT. The Ladies also finish in 4th and will face the Dalhousie Tigers in a one game playoff next Friday night, February 22nd at SMU.

February 15th, 2008. Overtime continues to be unlucky for Tommies.
Tommies 4 - Aigles Bleus 5. O/T

The 07-08 Tommies started the season off on the right foot in overtime against Acadia back in October but since that time have gone 0 - 6 in the extra frame or shoot-out. STU forced overtime again tonight against 8th ranked Moncton and gained an important point but were not able to get the 2nd. As a matter of fact the number 2 wasn’t friendly at all tonight. The Tommies had a 2 goal lead but the 2nd period saw Moncton score 3 goals to erase the advantage.

Moncton actually scored less then a minute into the game to stun the crowd and make them wonder if it was going to be a long night. But the Tommies got rolling at 2:06 when David Crossman made a nice rush into the Moncton end, shot the puck at the net and had a lucky bounce off the Moncton defender go in. Roy and Cassidy with assists. A few minutes later Max Chamberland charged up ice and made no mistake burying the puck unassisted. Matt Seymour wanted some action shortly there after on an odd man rush and when the passing lanes got clogged, Matt fired a top shelf goal for the 2 goal cushion with assists to Banfield and Butera.

The second frame saw the Tommies come close on more than one occasion but it was Moncton doing all the scoring with 3 goals including one with less than 25 seconds left in the period. The Tommies came out hungry in the third period and tied it up off the stick of Ryan Card. This was his second goal of the season, both being of the huge variety. Although Moncton scored the OT winner on a seeing eye wrist shot, Matt Davis played strong in goal and stopped a 3 on 1 shorthanded break by Moncton in the 3rd. Final shots on goal favoured U de M 44 to 38.

In other AUS action X beat Dalhousie 3 to 1 and Acadia downed SMU 4 - 3 in a shootout. The Tommies are tied with the X-Men for 4th and sit one point up on Acadia for 6th. If the Tommies want to start the playoffs at home they need to win tomorrow night in PEI. The Panthers were officially eliminated from playoff contention tonight for the 3rd straight year. Please remember that tomorrow’s game begins at 7:30 PM and can be heard live on Positive Hits

or you can watch the game on the free webcast from Panther TV. DG ARTICLE AUS ROUNDUP

February 14th, 2008. Squirrels rebound to sink STU in O/T.
Tommies 5 - Squirrels 6. O/T Shootout.

The Lady Tommies handed over one to their rivals last night on a silver platter. Up two goals with less then 5 minutes to play in the third, the Squirrels roared (OK, chirped) back with two goals in 28 seconds to tie and eventually scored the win in a shootout. Scoring for the Tommies were Dominique Bernier with 3, Nicole Ernst, and Michelle Goguen. Liette Arseneault suffered the loss facing 26 shots. The O/T point moves STU ahead of Dalhousie for 4th in the AUS, as the Tigers lost to X 4 to 1. DG Article

In men’s action last night, UNB defeated UPEI 4 to 3. This has secured a playoff birth for the Tommies as the Panthers sit 3 points behind STU with only one game left. Tonight the Tommies take on Moncton at 7 PM, at the LBR
AUS preview..

February 13th, 2008. Tommies versus Moncton postponed.

Make up game - U de M versus STU, Friday night, 7 PM LBR. Live on Positive Hits 96.5.

Southern New Brunswick’s weather is to blame for the postponement of tonight’s Tommies game against Les Aigles Bleus. It is very likely to be made up either on Friday or Sunday night as the playoffs officially begin next Wednesday. Tomorrow night UNB will be at the LBR to face off against the Lady Tommies, while up the hill the UPEI Panthers will take on the Squirrels with a big two points on the line and playoff implications. Ryan Card article.

February 10th, 2008. Tigers defeat STU.
Tommies 1 - Tigers 2.

In Ladies action from Sunday afternoon, the Tigers were able to hold on to the slimmest of leads to trump the Tommies. Renee Edison from Rebekah Thompson opened the scoring early in the second frame but Dalhousie roared back with two consecutive goals which proved to be enough for the win. Liette Arseneault got the hard loss facing 37 shots. STU managed 18 the other way. These two teams sit tied for fourth each with 18 points and 2 games remaining. Dal will have the tougher challenge as they face the X-Women and Huskies while the Tommies finish off against the Squirrels and Panthers.

February 9th, 2008. Tommies lose to bitter Huskies.
Tommies 3 - Huskies 4.

Rudisuela out of commission.

The Tommies fought second place SMU to the bitter end....literally. While the Huskies left town with the win they certainly didn’t make any friends in Tommieland with their post game antics. Before we get to the end lets tell you that the Tommies had a 2 - 0 lead at the end of the first on goals by Corey Banfield (Seymour, Bowers) and Jean Bourbeau (Chamberland, Murphy). In the second penalty trouble resulted in 2 SMU goals.

Early in the third period St Mary’s scored two goals before the half way mark but the Tommies replied off the stick of Max Chamberlad on the PP. Assist to Justin Bowers. Late in the period Jean Bourbeau creamed Dan Rudisuela with a clean check but the Huskies bench cried foul. There was no penalty as the hit was clean. As the siren sounded to end the game SMU became a tad unglued and several started throwing punches. Andrew Hotham threw a few at Justin Bowers and some SMU player brought Paul Giallonardo close enough to their bench where Paul received a few extras from players not on the ice. All and all nothing happened too serious but the Huskies sure looked like a team that had nothing to lose this late in the season trying to suck in a team that has everything to lose. In my mind that’s cheap.

The Tommies remain in 4th spot. In other action X defeated PEI 8 to 5, UNB downed Acadia 7 to 3. STU is up on X by a point, two on Acadia, and three on PEI. Next game for the Tommies is versus Moncton, 7PM on Wednesday.

In Ladies action the Tommies lost to ST FX 2 to 1. Scoring for STU was Catherine Boudreau. Mia Leander faced 31 shots in the loss while STU could only manage 6 shots the other way.

February 8th, 2008. X = 2 points for Tommies.
Tommies 4 - X-Men 1.

In another must win game for the Tommies the men in Green and Gold came up big tonight at the LBR. In a very entertaining game the X-Men were the first on the scoreboard with a power play marker at 6:21. The Tommies rebounded at 13:32 when Matt Seymour made no mistake in front of the net on a nice feed from Justin Bowers and Corey Banfield. The game remained tied until late in the second period when Ryan Card was Tommie on the spot at the side of the net and potted his first goal of the season. It was a big goal for Ryan and the entire team was excited by his contribution. Aaron Lobb and Justin Roy got the assists.

With STU hanging on to the one goal lead in the third, penalty trouble threatened to tie the game but the PK unit fought off two extended 5 on 3 disadvantages. Justin Bowers would end up scoring at 17:04 unassisted when he broke in alone, picked up his own rebound and scored the cushion goal. Jean Bourbeau scored into the empty net to salt this one away. The Tommies fired 31 shots at X and Matt Davis faced 27 for the win.

St. Thomas faces St. Mary’s tomorrow night at 7PM. SMU lost in O/T to PEI tonight, Acadia lost in a shoot out to Moncton, so the Tommies sit 2 points up on Acadia for 4th and 3 points up on X and PEI for the final playoff birth. AUS Standings. DG Story HH League round up..

Tommies 2 - Aigles Bleues 3.

The Lady Tommies came up on the wrong side of a 3 to 2 game last night in Moncton. STU was down 1 to 0 after one period but tied the score when Sarah Sollows scored. Moncton went ahead by 2 before Dominique Bernier scored late in the third to finish out the scoring. Liette Arsenault faced 23 shots in the loss. DG Article.

February 2nd, 2008. Huskies knock down Tommies.
Tommies 1 - Huskies 5 .

After a big victory in Antigonish last night the Tommies were hoping to keep the momentum rolling in Halifax. It didn’t start well when St. Mary’s scored at 6:03 of the first but Aaron Lobb made a nice play on a blocked shot, skated in and sent a nice pass to Jason Cassidy who potted the goal to tie the game. The game remained tied going into the second period but there was a disallowed SMU goal late when the puck went in but the net came off the moorings first.

In the middle frame the Huskies started to pull away with 2 goals and once again a late penalty to STU cost them early in the third when the Huskies scored at the 58 second mark to go ahead by three. They got one more at 8:24 and that would eventually chase Matt Davis in net. Guy Miszczak came on and stopped everything that came his way. The good news tonight is the Squirrels downed Acadia 6 to 5 and St FX downed PEI 5 to 2. The Tommies remain in 4th place, one point up on both X and Acadia with PEI trailing by three.

February 1st, 2008. Tommies fight passed X.
Tommies 2 - X-Men 1.

It took a late third period power play goal but the Tommies muscled out a much needed win in Antigonish. With only one point separating the 4th place Tommies from the tied for 5th place X-Men, tonight’s game could be considered crucial. STU got off on the right foot when they scored a first period power play marker from Matt Seymour with assists to Bowers and Chamberland. The CIS game sheet says Max Chamberland scored it but Randy Corey and Harold DeCourcey say otherwise. I’ll stick to the Positive Hits team’s analysis. The goal was scored on a 5 on 3 PP.

In the second period neither team was able to dent the twine and both teams were only able to muster 7 shots on goal combined. St Thomas started the third period shorthanded and X made them pay by scoring a goal in the first minute. Momentum continued on St FX’s side as they pounded Matt Davis with shots but Matt stood tall and held the fort until Anthony Butera scored the game winner with 2:44 left in the third. The goal was on the PP with assists going to Giallonardo and Bowers. In total Matt faced 24 shots for the win, while the Tommies fired 21 the other way. This was a huge 2 points for St. Thomas as Acadia was able to beat Moncton tonight while UPEI lost to St. Mary’s. Tomorrow night the Tommies head to Halifax to take on the high flying Huskies. Tune in at 7 PM on Positive Hits.

January 30th, 2008. Tommies brush off Squirrels.
Tommies 4 - Squirrels 3.

The Lady Tommies gave UNB an acorn of hope last night but it was short lived. STU lead by 2 goals after two periods but allowed UNB 3 straight goals in the third for the lead. It was just enough to tease the pesky Doe Squirrels as the gals turned right back up ice and tied it off the stick of Catherine Boudreau. Amy MacLennan and Ashley Duguay with the goals in the second frame. Ashley Duguay, with her second of the night, closed the lid on the game with 1:28 left. UNB was not able to come back. Liette Arsenault got the win facing 20 shots.

January 27th, 2008. Panthers show claws, dump Tommies.
Tommies 1 - Panthers 4.

In a pivotal match up between two teams that needed the points, UPEI came out on top. The game tonight was a make up game from December 1st when the Panthers were confined to the Island due to weather. UPEI was first on the score sheet in the first but the Tommies were able to tie the game late in the period. Jean Bourbeau whacked one home with the helpers going to Ryan Murphy and Max Chamberland.

The second period would be the Tommies ultimate undoing when the Panthers scored three goals including one shorthanded. That proved to be to much to overcome on this night as Matt Davis faced 26 shots in the loss. STU fired 29 shots the other way. Next up for the Tommies is Friday night in Antigonish when they take on the X-Men. You can catch the game live on Positive Hits 96.5.

In Ladies action yesterday the Tommies lost 7 to 1 versus Moncton. Catherine Boudreau scored the lone goal and Mia Leander was tagged with the Loss.

January 25th, 2008. Tommies get nipped by Squirrels. #26 Retired.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 4.

The Tommies celebrated the 14th annual Lou Chabot Memorial game by “officially” retiring his number 26 tonight at the LBR. A beautiful banner will hang with pride as a permanent reminder of Lou. Thank you to all those involved in organizing tonight’s festivities, Mrs. Pauline Chabot and Lou’s former teammates for marking this important piece of Tommies history.

On the hockey side of things UNB got the final goal early in the third period and was able to make it stand as the winner. UNB scored first just after a STU penalty had elapsed but the Tommies would come back 2 minutes later when Corey Banfield scored on the PP from Chamberland and Lehr. The Squirrels scored the next two goals later in the period and the Green and Gold found themselves in the hole heading to the second frame.

The second period saw the Tommies tie the game with two big goals. Justin Roy from Turgeon and Murphy slimmed the margin and Justin Bowers tied it up with helpers to Roy and Butera. STU ended the period on the PK and early in the third received another one to put them down 2 men. The Squirrels capitalized on their power play with the eventual game winner, 56 seconds in. The Tommies could not recover on this night. Matt Davis made more than a few big stops and kept his team in it. He faced 40 shots, while the Tommies took 25.

Next game is Sunday night versus PEI, 7PM start time at the LBR.

January 23rd, 2008. Squirrels terrorize Tommies.
Tommies 1 - Squirrels 6.

Just like any other evening at the Aitken Centre, the Squirrels came up all aces against STU. The Tommies held the fast flying Squirrels close for over half the game but two quick goals at the end of the second period helped to put STU away. You have to give the rodents credit they are elusive little buggers.

The Tommies got on the board early in the third period on the PP when Jean Bourbeau banged one home on the doorstep with helpers going to Matt Seymour and Paul Giallonardo. It would be all the guys would get on this night as Matt Davis was left out to dry several times but made some impressive saves facing 35 in total.

These two teams meet again on Friday night at the LBR in the 14th annual Lou Chabot Memorial Game. Lou’s number 26 will be officially retired by St. Thomas. Let’s wish our Tommies the best of luck and continue to cheer on our team loud and proud! DG Article

January 19th, 2008. Tommies go blank vs. Acadia.
Tommies 0 - Axemen 1.

The Acadia Axemen were desperate for a win and it showed tonight against STU. The Tommies could only muster 15 shots on the Axemen goal tender and never effectively got going. Acadia played a great defensive game and limited the Tommies opportunities 5 on 5 and on seven power play attempts. Jean Bourbeau on a breakaway and Matt Seymour in close on the PP had the best chances to score. Matt Davis faced 30 shots and only a second period PP marker eluded him. The Tommies come back to Fredericton and face the Squirrels on Wednesday and Friday night

In Ladies play, the Tommies beat Mount Allison 4 to 2. Scoring for STU in the first period were Rebekah Thompson from Josey Chamberlain and Ashley Duguay from Jessica Holt. January 18th, 2008. Tommies tune Tigers.
Tommies 6 - Tigers 3.

With the Tommies looking to make up ground on the top teams in the league, the Tigers were doing the same but hoping to make ground on a playoff spot. STU flew out of the gate when Kyle Gailey scored 13 seconds into the game from Seymour and Butera. Just over a minute later the new recruits teamed up for goal when Erick Tremblay scored his first as a Tommie from Jason Cassidy. The Tigers narrowed the margin half way through the period but Max Chamberland from Bourbeau and Lehr scored with under a minute left to regain the 2 goal lead.

Dalhousie came out ready in the second and took it to the Tommies. Dal. scored a shorthanded marker and a PP goal to tie the game. They out shot STU 15 to 6 in the period. In the third, St. Thomas woke up but it took until 8:53 when Jermey Turgeon got the eventual game winner from Cassidy and Lehr. Corey Banfield drove the nail in the coffin when he scored his first goal as a Tommie on the PP from Bourbeau and Butera at 16:44. As the Tigers tried to come back by pulling their goalie early, Matt Seymour scored into the empty net with the only assist going to Ryan Card at 18:06. Matt Davis gets the win facing 23 shots and the Tommies returned fire with 29. STU heads to Wolfville tomorrow night to play the Acadia Axemen at 7:30 PM and you can listen live on Positive Hits 96.5

January 12th, 2008. Moncton squeaks by Tommies.
Tommies 2 - Aigles Bleus 3.

In front of 4100 fans at the Moncton Coliseum, the home team was able to eek out a hard fought win. STU held period leads in the first and second intermissions but Moncton took the third and the game. The Tommies were first on the score sheet when Maxime Chamberland scored a short handed beauty at 16:31 from Seymour and Giallonardo. STU out shot Moncton 12 -10 in the period.

Les Aigles Bleus came back early in the second to tie the game but Moncton took 2 consecutive 4 minute double minors and Paul Giallonardo from Butera and Chamberland regained the Tommies lead. In the third period Moncton tied the game about 3 minutes in and took the lead when a penalized player stepped out of the box, went in one on one with our defenceman, deked him out, and slid the puck between Matt Davis’s legs for the game winner. Matt was solid in net and faced 34 U de M shots. The Tommies zipped 31 the other way.

In women’s action Moncton defeated STU 5 - 2. Moncton scored the first four goals before the Tommies answered with 2 from Amy MacLennan and Ashley Duguay. Liette Arsenault faced 29 shots on goal. January 8th, 2008. Tommies chalk up another win versus Panthers.
Tommies 4 - Panthers 2.

With fourth place on the line tonight at the LBR the Tommies found a way to win. As with the last game against Acadia, the first period was owned by PEI. The Panthers scored first at 8:28 and out shot STU 16 to 7. It didn’t take long for the Tommies to tie it up in the second. 32 seconds in Kyle Gailey scored on a pretty re-direct from Seymour and Giallonardo, that went right threw the goalie’s five hole. PEI scored the next one to regain the lead but they ended up taking two consecutive penalties and Paul Giallonardo tied it up on the two man PP from Butera and Chamberland. Speaking of Butera, he made a fantastic play with less than a minute remaining in the period by sliding to take the puck away from a breaking Panther player. The ref charged him with a penalty but if there was ever one to take, it was a good one.

STU started the third period out shorthanded but Matt Seymour (unassisted) scored the Tommies first SH goal of the season on a pretty breakaway. Matt made no mistake and roofed it on a pretty deke. Justin Bowers less than a minute later was sent in on his own breakaway, set up by Matt Seymour, and he scored the insurance. The Panthers tried to come back but it was to much of a task as Matt Davis shut them down in the third. He faced 40 shots for his fourth win in a row and the Tommies fired 26. Next game for the green and gold is at Moncton on Saturday night. 7 PM start time on Positive Hits 96.5. DG Story.

January 5th, 2008. Axemen put down on the “Matt”.
Tommies 3 - Axemen 0.

UPDATE: Daily Gleaner Article - Dec 1st game vs. PEI rescheduled to Sunday January 27th at the LBR.

With the Tommies receiving some disappointing news today, they received a big effort from Matt Davis in net. The first period was controlled, for the most part, by Acadia. The Tommies were left reeling being out shot 14 to 4 but Matt was up to the task and the two teams remained at zeros heading into the second.

STU picked up the pace in the middle frame and had several near misses in the Acadia end. The highlight of the period came at 5:54 when Aaron Lobb and David Lomas for the Axemen had a fight. It started off when Lomas took exception to a clean hit by David Crossman in the Tommies corner. He chirped Crossman for an extended period of time before Aaron asked him if he cared to dance. He obliged and it wasn’t long before his jersey was up over his head and received a few good upper cuts to his melon. DECISION....LOBB!!! The game resumed and just before the period ended Jean Bourbeau sent Max Chamberland in on a breakaway. Max made no mistake and gave the Tommies the lead heading to the third.

Kyle Gailey increased the lead to two at 5:11 with the only assist going to Matt Davis. Acadia pressed hard but when they pulled their goalie with two minutes left in the game, Devan Praught was “Tommie” on the spot and got his first goal of the season into the yawning cage from Max Chamberland. Matt Davis picks up the shut out and faced 48 shots for the win. The Tommies returned fire with 23.

Noticeably absent from the lineup tonight was Patrick Bordeleau. Rumour around the LBR was he secured another pro offer in the ECHL and is heading back down south to play hockey. Sorry to see him go but that’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. Good luck in your future. The Tommies return to action on Tuesday at the LBR versus the UPEI Panthers. Game time is 7 PM and you can catch the action on Positive Hits 96.5. DG Article

In Ladies exhibition action, STU lost 5 to 1 in Halifax vs. SMU.

January 4th, 2008. Tommies trample chirpy Tigers.
Tommies 7 - Tigers 4.

St. Thomas came out tonight in fine fashion and started off the second half of the AUS regular season in style. The old faithful and newcomers pulled together and got the job tonight against a tough, sometimes mouthy, Dalhousie Tigers team. One of STU’s new recruits got the game off to a good start 33 seconds into it. Jason Cassidy, filling in for an injured Jeff Bateman on the first line, potted one on a nifty pass from Justin Bowers and Paul Giallonardo. Just over 3 minutes later the Tommies were up two when Justin Roy, from Ryan Murphy and Ryan Card was finally able to bang it by the Dal. goalie after several chances in front of the net.

The second period belonged to the Tigers as they rattled off 3 power play markers and 18 shots on goal. Dal scored the first goal of the third period on the PP as well and took the lead 4 to 2. That goal woke up the sleeping soldiers and the rest of the game was owned by STU. Paul Giallonardo scored his first of the season from Bowers and Seymour on the PP to bring them within a goal and then Max Chamberland tied it 4 minutes later from Bowers and Butera. Ryan Lehr got the game winner, and also his first goal of the season, on the PP at 10:59 from Bourbeau and Cassidy and then Jason Cassidy picked up his 2nd goal and 3rd point on the night from Giallonardo and Butera. Kyle Gailey rounded out the scoring at 16:09 from Murphy and Lobb. After the game was out of reach the Tigers started running their mouths and tried to antagonize the Tommies but in the end they got their just dessert. Matt Davis picked up the win facing 32 shots and STU shot 34 pucks the other way. Next game is tomorrow night vs. Acadia at 7 PM at the LBR. The game is live on Positive Hits 96.5, click the links for the web-cast. DG Article 20080105

January 3rd, 2008. Tommies a surprise in first half? Not really.

Just read an article in the Halifax Daily News that stated the Tommies were the surprise of the first half in the AUS. While the pundits had dismissed STU as playoff long shots, the Tommies faithful knew there was more. It starts with the Coach, who in my opinion, has built a philosophy around work ethic and getting the job done. It is followed by a 2007-08 Tommies team that has bought into their coaches concept and has worked their butts off each night and have been rewarded more often than not. You can’t forget the play of Matt Davis, that’s for sure, or the offensive productivity of the first line.

With four new players to bolster the ranks, Coach Eagles must have been a really good boy last year for Santa to deliver that sort of quality and quantity in one Christmas break. I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to the second half of the AUS season. It begins tomorrow night at 7 PM at the LBR vs. Dalhousie and continues Saturday night vs. Acadia. Both games can be heard live on Positive Hits 96.5. DG Article.

December 30th, 2007. Tommies get axed.
Tommies 5 - Axemen 7. Exh. Game 3 Pete Kelly Cup.

The Tommies faced AUS rival Acadia in today’s consolation final of the Pete Kelly Cup. STU started off strong and scored 2:10 into the game when Aaron Lobb pulled the trigger from Devan Praught and Justin Roy. Acadia came back with a vengeance and scored the next four goals including a shorthanded tally to take a 3 goal lead. Matt Seymour slimmed that margin on the PP with assists to Bowers and Crossman.

In the second frame Justin Bowers narrowed the lead on a two man advantage from Seymour and Chamberland but Acadia responed with another shorthanded marker seconds later to recapture the 2 goal cushion. With 2 seconds left in the period and STU on the PP, Matt Seymour potted one from Bowers and newcomer Jason Cassidy.

With the new found momentum the Tommies came out ready in the third but a horrible giveaway in the offensive zone led to an Acadia breakaway and Matt Davis was unable to stop it. Once again Justin Bowers on the PP narrowed the lead with assists to Seymour and Butera but Acadia iced it with under a minute to play into the empty net. Matt Davis faced 29 Acadia shots while the Tommies fired 27 the other way. Next game for the Tommies is next Friday night at the LBR vs. Dalhousie.

Here is little more information on the new recruits for the Tommies. UPDATE: Tommies vs.Union Story Box

December 29th, 2007. STU busted by Union.
Tommies 1 - Dutchmen 3. Exh. Game 1 Pete Kelly Cup.

A very fast and organized Union College hockey team took care of the revamped Tommies at the Aitken Centre tonight. With 4 new faces in the lineup the Tommies looked a little “off” at times and may have been suffering the effects of turkey hangover. Guiillaume Miszczak got the start in net and played excellent facing 23 shots in the first period. The Tommies got things rolling early in the second period when Justin Bowers from Butera and Seymour scored on their first power play of the afternoon. In the middle of the second frame STU killed off an extended 2 man disadvantage to hold the lead but Union tied the game just after the mid point of the period.

The Dutchmen took the lead for good early in the third. While the goal was fine the Tommies were disorganized because of a “non-call” by the referee and never recovered. Justin Bowers took a 10 minute misconduct penalty when he told the ref, in some form, that he blew the call. The goal stood and Union would score one more to seal the win. Final shots on goal were 38-11. Guy Miszczak was great in net. The Tommies are back in action tomorrow at 1 PM vs. the Acadia Axemen.

The Tommies new recruits are as follows; Erick Tremblay, D #17. Keith Wynn D #20. Jason Cassidy F #23. Patrick Bordeleau F #71. I’ll list more information later.

December 20th, 2007. Season’s Greetings.

Wow, where does the time go? The first half and exams have drawn to a close and it’s time to spend special moments with the ones you love and cherish. To all of you out there in Tommies Nation, Merry Christmas and have a bright, productive New Year.

The final game of the first half versus UPEI was postponed due to weather condition on the Island. The game has not been reschedule but it should be announced sometime early in the New Year.

The Tommies next game will be an exhibition game against Union College Dutchmen of Schenectady NY. The game is part of the Pete Kelly Cup being held at UNB and starts at 4 PM December 29th at the Aitken University Centre.

November 24th, 2007. Tommies fly high over Aigles Bleus.
Tommies 5 - Aigles Bleus 3.

The Tommies played an inspired game against a strong Moncton club and Justin Bowers added the mustard to top things off for STU. The tone for the game was set early when Justin scored 30 seconds into the game assisted by Bateman and Seymour. Moncton evened it up before the game was five minutes old but Bowers scored #2 with 35 seconds left in the period on the power play with the helpers going to the same guys, Bateman and Seymour.

Matt Davis held the Tommies fort strong in the second frame but Moncton was able to tie the score on the PP. Just 1:30 into the third period Matt Davis possibly saved the game when he made a larcenous stop on Moncton, coming across the crease to make the save. STU responded and scored at 3:24 on the powerplay when Matt Seymour connected on the two man advantage with assists to Bowers and Bateman. Moncton was able to tie one more time but Justin Bowers got his hat trick when he intercepted the puck in the Eagles zone and roofed it for the unassisted tally. Moncton pressed and when STU took a penalty with 2:34 remaining, things got a little tense. The Tommies fought it off and when Moncton got called for a late penalty Jean Bourbeau salted the game away when Jeff Bateman slid a nice pass over to him all alone in the slot with 23 seconds to play. Matt Davis gets the big win facing 40 shots, while STU replied with 36. Great work!! Bowers 4 points, Bateman 4 points, Seymour 3 points. DG Article

In Ladies action the Tommies shut out Mt Allison 3 to 0. No word on the goal scorers or who picked up the shut out.

November 23rd, 2007. Tommies get shut out in Halifax.
Tommies 0 - Huskies 4.

Sorry Tommie fans, its another short summary tonight for the Ladies. Despite having almost equal shots on goal, St Mary’s was able to convert on 4 of them and that was the difference. Shots favoured SMU 34 to 33. Mia Leander took the loss in net. The Tommies head to Sackville this evening to end their first half versus the Mounties. The men are at home and will take on the powerful Aigles Bleus at 7 PM. Moncton is coming off a huge shoot out victory versus the Squirrels that destroyed their perfect season to date. Expect a huge effort tonight from our St. Thomas soldiers. GO TOMMIES!

November 21st, 2007. Panthers scratch by Tommies.
Tommies 2 - Panthers 3.

Things didn’t start well tonight for St. Thomas and they didn’t end well either. Anthony Butera was not in the line up tonight and his presence on the blue line was missed but the team played well regardless. In an important game versus a close rival, the Panthers scored 14 seconds into the first. The Tommies battled back and scored a power play goal at 4:17 by Justin Bowers from Chamberland and Giallonardo. STU took the lead at 14:47 when Kyle Gailey scored his second of the season from Jean Bourbeau and Matt Foster.

UPEI scored 2 power play goals in the second period to take the lead which they would not relinquish. They held on for the big 2 point win and leap frog the Tommies and are now tied with ST FX for 4th place. Matt Davis played well in net facing 28 shots and gets tagged with the loss. The Tommies fired 33. Next game for STU is Saturday night versus Moncton at the LBR.

November 19th, 2007. FREE Webcast vs. UPEI on Wednesday.

After an excellent effort on Friday night vs. the Squirrels, St. Thomas heads off to PEI to tangle with the Panthers on Wednesday night. The game begins at 7 PM with live video/audio feeds courtesy of Panther TV and Aliant. If you want to watch the game please follow this PANTHER TV LINK. The game will also have audio by STU’s broadcaster Positive Hits 96.5. I’m not sure if you can mute the Panther broadcast and listen to our feed while watching but it’s worth a try.

This is a big game for both clubs as there is only one point that separates the two teams in the standings. Two points currently separate 4th in the league from two teams tied for the sixth playoff spot. ST FX has 12 points and an extra game, followed by STU with 11. Dalhousie and UPEI both have 10 points. This will be the first regular season match up this year. UPEI beat the Tommies in exhibition play back on September 30th. The score was 6 - 5 in OT.

November 16th, 2007. Tommies push Squirrels to shoot-out.
Tommies 2 - Squirrels 3. OT, shoot-out.

I know that close only counts in horse shoes but folks it was so close. That arrogant little smirk, that little patronizing look those Squirrels have, so close to being wiped off their faces. You have to give the Tommies credit and I’m incredibly proud of them. The whole team, top to bottom, kudos to you.

The rodents were first on the board tonight in the first period when they scored a power play goal. Matt Davis made more than a few big saves and would come up big all night. In the second period the BBC turned on and Chamberland up to Bateman, who slid a great pass over to Bowers, and that knotted it up for STU.

The third period saw the Squirrels surge ahead on a PP that never should have been but the Tommies remained vigilant and didn’t give up. Half way through Justin Bowers got his second of the evening from Mr. Bateman and Ryan Lehr to tie it up. The high powered offense of UNB pushed the rest of the way but Matt Davis assured that the Tommies would go to overtime for the 5th Friday in a row. In OT the Tommies didn’t officially get a shot but Ryan Murphy undressed a Squirrel defenseman and fired the puck high for a close call. Jeff Bateman got kicked out of the game with 20 odd seconds to play and was not eligible for the shoot-out festivities.

In the shoot out, UNB scored first, Justin Bowers replied for STU. Squirrels scored again, Max Chamberland missed. Matt Davis made a great save on Squirrel #3 and Jeremy Turgeon missed on his opportunity to tie. Matt Davis faced 45 shots and was once again brilliant. The Tommies fired 22. Next game for the Tommies is Wednesday at PEI.

November 11th, 2007. Tommies get X-ploded at LBR.
Tommies 0 - X-Women 8.

No good news to report this Sunday for the Ladies. While the Tommies did increase their shot count in their second game vs. X, the end result was a little less flattering with no goals to report. STU was out shot 37 - 19 and allowed 5 goals in the third period. Liette Arsenault was tagged for the loss. St. Thomas has next weekend off and won’t see action again until Friday Nov. 23rd vs. SMU in Halifax. Men’s & Women’s DG Articles.

November 10th, 2007. Huskies “interfere” with Tommies overtime plans.
Tommies 2 - Huskies 3. OT.

Once again the strong willed and no quit Tommies were edged in overtime but this time it was followed by a little controversy. Before the game reached OT it was an interesting affair with STU taking the lead late in the first period on a goal by Kyle Gailey with assists to Jeremy Turgeon and Jeff Bateman. The lead stood until the third when SMU scored 2 goals and took the lead. St. Mary’s certainly earned both goals and it looked liked the Tommies had run out of gas. Well you don’t count out the 2007-08 Tommies that easy and through grit & guts Matt Seymour tied the game with 1:22 to play with the assists going to Card and Lehr. For the second night in a row and for the 3rd time in 4 games, STU was heading to OT.

Early in the OT period St Thomas came “oh so close” but Justin Bowers shot the puck over the net. The Huskies came down a little later and last years AUS MVP shoots the puck at Matt Davis, who makes the save, but continues into our goalie and clearly interfered with him. Matt was powerless on the rebound as he and Rudisuela were in the back of the net. Justin Bowers argued the refs decision but the goal stood and the Tommies get one point. Matt Davis was totally solid tonight and faced 42 shots with period totals of 9, 18, 14, 1. STU shot 23 the other way.

In Ladies action from this afternoon the Ladies got roughed up by Dalhousie 6 to 1. While the Tommies out shot the Tigers, their only goal was scored by Ashley Duguay from Dominique Bernier. Mia Leander took the loss in net. Tomorrow afternoon the Tommies take on perennial favourite St FX. 2 PM start time at the LBR..

November 9th,2007. Shoot-out show down shuts down STU.
Tommies 2 - X-Men 3. OT, shoot out.

The Tommies played in their first regular season AUS shoot out this evening against ST FX. The X- Men were the winners but STU is showing fire in their belly and playing like a true team against tough competition. In their 4th Friday overtime game in as many weeks, the Tommies kept grinding and working hard and got a well deserved point.

X scored the only goal of the first to take an early lead while the shots on goal were even at 11 in the period. The Tommies knotted the affair mid way through the second on Jeff Bateman’s sixth of the season on a pretty feed from Justin Bowers. X was able to surge ahead before the period was done on the PP. If not for Matt Davis the lead could have been large as the X-Men out shot the Tommies 14 to 8.

STU came out ready in the third and Ryan Murphy tied the game at 12:25 with his first goal for the Tommies in regular season play. Jean Bourbeau got the only assist. It was a big goal for the team and for Ryan, who was able to get that monkey off his back. The line of Chamberland, Seymour, and Murphy will continue to be heard from.

Overtime solved nothing and the game went to the shoot out. Bowers, Bateman, and Chamberland missed their shots but Bowers, with a nifty move, just missed getting one. The X shooters were 1 of 2 but that was enough. Matt Davis had another strong night and faced 41 shots in total. STU fired 33 the other way. Tomorrow the Lady Tommies face Dalhousie and the men face St Mary’s, both at the LBR. DG 20071110 Ryan Lehr Article.

November 4th, 2007. Tommies shut out Doe Squirrels.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 0.

Whatever lucky charm the Lady Tommies have versus the Doe Squirrels, I wish they could share with the guys. The Ladies shut down their rivals today at the Aitken Centre and Mia Leander picked up her first AUS shut out. It’s not that STU didn’t give the Squirrels a chance but when the third period came the girls dropped the nice girl attitude and took it up a notch. At the 39 second mark of the third Catherine Boudreau potted the eventual game winner from Bernier and Duguay. Ashley Duguay got a power play goal at 9:11 to increase the Squirrels headaches and Catherine Boudreau, with goal #2, pounded the point home with 18 seconds left to play, shorthanded. Ashley Duguay picked up an assist for her third point of the night. The Tommies find themselves in second place in the AUS standings and very possibly, come Tuesday, nationally ranked FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!! IT’S NOT THE WAY YOU ROCK, IT’S THE WAY THAT YOU ROLL!!! KEEP ON ROLLIN’. DG Story 05/11

November 3rd, 2007. Productive day for STU hockey.
Tommies 3 - X-Men 1.

The Tommies continue to get points from their top line and get big efforts from the whole team. In Antigonish tonight the Tommies’ BBC line (Bateman from Bowers and Chamberland) teamed up to stake the team to an early lead at 3:06 of the first period. The next goal was scored at 9:44 of the second when Anthony Butera from Bowers and Bateman scored on the PP. The game was very even going into the third.

The X-men came out gunning in the third and scored early at 3:44 to cut the lead in half but the strong work of the Hammer line of Roy, Praught, and Lobb banged one home at 11:44 to regain the 2 goal cushion. Matt Davis did the rest in net and stopped 34 of 35 shots including 15 in the third as St FX pressed hard. The Tommies fired 20 in total with period totals of 6, 10, and 4. STU returns home from Nova Scotia with 3 of a possible 4 points from the weekend. Next game is Friday night versus X at the LBR.

In women’s action the Ladies improved to 4 and 1 with a 4 to 3 win against PEI. Jessica Holt made her Tommies debut and got a goal, while firing 6 shots. Other STU goal scorers were Catherine Boudreau, Caroline Hammerheim, and Lucrece Nussbaum (1 g, 1 a) while Rene Edison had 2 helpers. Mia Leander picked up the win in net facing 23 Panther shots. The Tommies head across campus tomorrow afternoon to take on the Doe Squirrels at 2 PM. Should be a good contest at the Aitken Centre. GO TOMMIES!!!

November 2nd, 2007. Huskies bite Tommies in OT.
Tommies 2 - Huskies 3. OT.

Another Friday night and another game goes into overtime for St. Thomas. While the players in Green and Gold weren’t able to get the win, they were very apt in keeping up with a strong St. Mary’s team. There was no scoring in the first period but the Tommies lost an important player when Matt Seymour was ejected for hitting from behind.

STU was first on the score sheet at 1:13 of the 2nd period when the BBC [Bowers from Bateman and Chamberland] scored on the power play. The lead stood until later in the period when SMU nailed two goals 1:09 apart. In the third period both teams had chances but the Tommies replied with under 6 minutes to play when Jeff Bateman from Justin Bowers and Paul Giallonardo scored just as a Huskies penalty had expired. Justin Roy made a fine play with less than 2 minutes to play. SMU had an odd man rush but Justin was able to lift the players stick to take away the chance and guarantee 1 point.

In overtime Anthony Butera had a good chance early to end it but it wasn’t to be and St Mary’s buried their chance 2 minutes into the extra frame. Matt Davis was back in net and was charged with the tough loss facing 40 shots while STU had 23. The Tommies head to Antigonish tomorrow night to tangle with the X-Men. November 2nd, 2007. Tommies to “Battle” this weekend.

The Lady Tommies fire up the war machine on Sunday as they head across campus to take on the Squirrels at the Aitken Centre starting at 2 PM. Jessica Holt will make her STU debut this weekend on defense after patiently sitting out to regain eligibility after playing for Boston College. The Tommies will also face off against UPEI on Saturday afternoon at the LBR starting at 2 PM. DG Article - Josey Chamberlain

The men will take to the ice versus St Mary’s on Friday and St. FX on Saturday. Game times are 7 PM and you can hear the action live on Positive Hits 96.5 FM or on the web at www.positivehits.ca .

October 31th, 2007. Tricky Squirrels treat on Tommies.
Tommies 3 - Squirrels 8.

On a night for ghoulish outcasts and weird creatures the Squirrels didn’t disappoint and were their normal ugly selves. They lived up to their national #1 status and creamed the Tommies. UNB jumped out to a 5 goal lead before STU potted two quick ones from Justin Bowers (Bateman, Giallonardo) and Jeff Bateman (Butera, Chamberland) in the second period. The Squirrels scored the next 3 goals before Jeremy Turgeon from Anthony Butera scored late in the third period to finish off the scoring. Matt Davis started in net but was pulled after 5 goals and Guillaume Miszczak came in to replace him mid way through the second.

Although you’ll read all the Squirrel clichés in tomorrow’s Gleaner about their win tonight, the truth of their arrogance you will probably never hear. I think the most interesting was “that we [UNB} should hold an inquiry to find out how STU scored 3 goals on us.” That was really said but the sad thing is, we whole heartily agree. The #1 team in the country should do better, for goodness sake you’re better than that. We salute you Squirrels and wish you better luck next time. DG Story 11/01.

October 28th, 2007. Tommies K.O. Huskies in OT.
Tommies 3 - Huskies 2. OT.

The Lady Tommies continue to push their way up the AUS standings with a big victory over favoured St. Mary’s. The dogs scored the only goal of the first period but were out shot by STU 10 to 7. The Tommies came back in the second frame and tied it up at one on a goal by Josey Chamberlain. Ashley Duguay looked like she had won the game at 17:20 of the third when she scored on a break away but SMU was able to score 40 seconds later to send the game to OT. In the extra frame Catherine Boudreau from Michelle Goguen lit the lamp for the 2 points. Liette Arsenault faced 26 Huskies’ shots for the win while the STU offense replied with 33. The Lady Tommies sit all alone in 3rd place with the 4 point weekend. The Tommies next game is Saturday vs. UPEI, 2 PM start time at the LBR.

October 27th, 2007. Tommies get “Max” offense, down Tigers.
Tommies 8 - Tigers 5.

Led by a six point night from Maxime Chamberland the Tommies defeated the high flying Tigers tonight in Halifax. Jeff Bateman and Justin Bowers each had five points on the night. Matt Seymour from Bourbeau and Bateman started the scoring at 3:19 and the Tommies didn’t look back. Max Chamberland was next on the score card from Bowers and Card but Dalhousie cut the lead in half shortly after. The next three belong to the Tommies, Bowers (Bateman, Chamberland) on the PP, Matt Seymour (Chamberland, Crossman) with his second and Chamberland (Seymour, Murphy) with his second finished off the first period with STU up by 4 goals.

The Tigers were first on the board in the second period but Jeremy Turgeon (Bowers, Bateman) got a sweet rebound to regain the 4 goal cushion and go into the third with a hefty lead. Dal. scored first again before Max Chamberland (Bowers, Bateman) got his hat trick on the PP. The Tigers got 2 more late goals before Jeff Bateman (Chamberland, Bowers) ended any chance of a come back into the empty net. Matt Davis played his 5th strait game and looked sharp facing 40 Tiger shots for the win. The Tommies fired 40. After a successful 3 point weekend in N.S., next up for St. Thomas is a big home game on Wednesday night against our old pals from the other part of the hill, the UNB Squirrels. Let’s hope for a little treat against those tricky rodents.

In women’s action the Ladies defeated Mt Allison 5 to 2. Renee Edison led the way for the Tommies with 2 goals and singles going to Nussbaum, Boudreau, and Wilson. Sarah Sollows and Ashley Duguay had 2 assists each. STU out shot the Mounties 27 to 12. Mia Leander got the win in net. The Tommies face off tomorrow afternoon against the St Marys Huskies.

October 26th, 2007. Tommies axed down in overtime.
Tommies 3 - Axemen 4. OT.

For the second week in a row the Tommies and Axemen needed overtime to settle things. The home side proved to be the victorious one on this night even though STU out chanced and out shot Acadia. The game was scoreless after the first where the Tommies held the shot advantage 12 to 7 but Acadia was first on the board early in second frame. STU came right back when Justin Bowers from Card and Bateman tied it up at 4:54. St. Thomas took the lead when hard working Jeremy Turgeon fought for the puck in the corner and fed Jeff Bateman who made a pretty pass out to Bowers for his second goal of the night.

Acadia didn’t quit and scored the next two goals before Anothy Butera took a Justin Bowers faceoff draw and floated one by the Acadia goaltender to tie the game. The final 5 minutes of regulation and the first 5 minutes of overtime belonged to STU as far as territorial play was concerned but at 6:08 the Axemen took advantage of an opportunity and ended the game. Matt Davis took the hard loss and faced 25 pucks while the Tommies fired 38 the other way. Tomorrow night the Tommies invade Dalhousie and try to get back on the winning trail. Game time is 7 PM on Positive Hits 96.5 FM. DG Article

October 21st, 2007. Tommies roughed up in Antigonish.
Tommies 0 - X-women 6.

Coming off an opening night win the Tommies were hoping for a repeat of last year’s playoff defeat of X. No such luck on this day as the X-women shut down STU. The Tommies could only muster 9 shots on goal, 3 in each period. Liette Arseneault got the call today in net and faced 33 shots. St Thomas has their home opener next Saturday afternoon against Mt. Allison.

October 20th, 2007. Tigers get first win at STU.
Tommies 2 - Tigers 4.

The Tommies were never out of this game and if a few bounces in the second period could have gone their way, the tale of the tape would have been different. Dalhousie started the scoring just over a minute into the game but two of the reunited Killer B’s tied it up at 1 when Jean Bourbeau took a nifty pass from Jeff Bateman. Dal scored next on a hard slap shot that eluded Matt Davis but the Tommies stormed right back when spark plug Jeremy Turgeon scored his first goal as a Tommie from Butera and Praught.

The second period held chances for both teams but the game remained tied at 2. The Tommies successfully killed off two extended 2 man disadvantages while Matt Davis stopped 11 shots just on Dal’s power plays. Early in the third Dalhousie moved ahead for good when a defensive miscue led to a couple of opportunities in front of the Tommies net the Tigers third try finally went in. They would score one more late to put the nail in STU’s casket. Matt Davis had a great night in net and faced 41 shots while being named the player of the game. STU fired 34 shots. Next weekend the Tommies turn around and do it again with games in NS. Listen live to both on Positive Hits 96.5. DG20071022

In Ladies action, the Tommies start off their regular season in style with a 6 -2 win over Dalhousie. The first three goals were scored by the Tommies. Sarah Sollows (Bourdreau) started things off early then Catherine Boudreau (Duguay, Bernier) replied and Caroline Hammerheim (Thompson) with goal number 3. Dalhousie scored the next two goals “bang bang” in the second but that would be it. STU scored the next 3 from Wilson, Duguay and Bernier to bury the Tigers. Shots on goal were 27 to 27 and Mia Leander picked up the win. The Tommies play tomorrow against a tough ST FX team.

October 19th, 2007. Axemen fall to Tommies in OT.
Tommies 3 - Axemen 2. OT

The home opener was a success but STU played a gracious host and let the Axeman score the first two goals on this night. Acadia took a 2 - 0 lead in the first period but the no quit Tommies came back with a goal in period 2 by Jean Bourbeau. Jean’s goal was scored on a Penalty Shot after he was interfered with on a shorthanded break away. He made no mistake and buried it up top. The Tommies pressed hard in the third period for the equalizer and Justin Bowers from Chamberland and Butera got it with just under 8 minutes to go. You could just tell that the home fans were ready for the win. In overtime Bourbeau struck again with assists to Bowers and Butera to send the fans home happy. Matt Davis faced 17 shots for the win and the final shots on goal favoured STU 27 - 17. DG Article.

Tomorrow evening the Tommies host a much improved Dalhousie squad hungry for their first win of the season. Remember immediately following the game the Tommies will be hosting a meet the players night at the canteen.

October 19th, 2007. Tommies home opener tonight.

The Tommies get down to business tonight in their 2007-08 home opener vs. Acadia. It’s a chance for you to come out and see the new faces at STU. Also make note that after tomorrow night’s game vs. Dalhousie the Tommies will be having a “meet and greet” for fans to get to know this year’s players. This will be immediately following the game at the Canteen area of the LBR. Come on out and say hello. Maxime Chamberland article.

Also this weekend the Lady Tommies take to the ice in their season debut. Both games are on the road in Nova Scotia against Dalhousie on Saturday and ST FX on Sunday afternoon. Good luck!

October 13th, 2007. Tommies downed by Moncton.
Tommies 1 - Aigles Bleus 5.

The Tommies open up the regular season with a loss to a tough Moncton team. The Blue Eagles scored on the power play at 6:53 of the first period and never looked back. They scored two more PP markers in the second period to pull away and two at even strength in the third. Jeff Bateman from Anthony Butera scored at 14:07 of the third period for the Tommies lone goal. Matt Davis played solid in net and faced 42 shots. The Tommies were able to muster 25 shots on goal, 16 of them in the final frame. STU hosts their home opener on Friday night October 19th against Acadia.

October 12th, 2007. Squirrels dump Tommies in OT.
Tommies 2 - Squirrels 3. OT Exh.

Ashley Duguay scored both Tommies goals including a late third period marker to tie the game. The Doe Squirrels ended it early in overtime. Liette Arseneault got the start in net and faced 21 UNB shots. STU fired 34 at the Squirrel net minders. DG STORY 2007 10 13.

The men’s team start their regular season tonight in Moncton. Game time is 7 PM on Positive Hits 96.5.

October 6th, 2007. Squirrels to much for STU.
Tommies 2 - Squirrels 5. Exh. Game 4 UNB Fall Classic.

Tonight’s update will be short and sweet due to the old adage that if you don’t have anything good to say, shut the hell up. There is nothing good to say about Squirrels, never has been, never will be. They are evil, vile creatures that should be trapped and shipped to a deserted island. I digress. The Tommies opened the scoring tonight when Jean Bourbeau from Leitner and Butera completed a pretty passing play. The score was tied at one after the first.

The Squirrels took a 4 to 1 lead before Devan Praught from Matt Seymour and Jean Bourbeau replied in the third period. Matt Davis played in net and faced 40 shots, while the Squirrel net minder faced 21. There were a few chippy moments in this game and there isn’t much love between these two teams. The Tommies next game will be their first regular season contest at Moncton next Saturday.

October 5th, 2007. Tommies start off Strong against X.
Tommies 4 - X-Men 1. Exh. Game 1 UNB Fall Classic.

The Tommies rode a great game by Matt Davis to their first victory of 2007-08 at the LBR this evening. With the win STU moves on to the championship game tomorrow against either Laurier or UNB. Tonight, Jean Bourbeau got the Tommies rolling early in the first with an unassisted goal. Before the period was over STU was up 2 when Ryan Lehr scored on the PP from Bateman and Bowers. The Tommies kept pressing in the second frame and Anthony Butera increased the lead to 3 from Bowers and Chamberland. In the third period X scored on a two man advantage to cut STU’s lead but the Tommies would not be denied their first win of the season and Maxime Chamberland from Bowers and Bateman cemented the game late. Matt Davis was stellar in goal and earned player of game honors. Shots on goal were 4-12 in the first, 13-19 in the second, and 19-32 overall in favour or X. I guess Tommie fans have something new to watch in 07-08 it’s called the “BBC”. Bowers, Bateman and Chamberland, 7 points tonight.

October 3rd, 2007. New recruits announced at STU.

The AUS hockey season is almost set to get underway and Coach Eagles has announced his new recruits on the Official Tommies home page. Here is a little more information on the new Green and Gold soldiers.

Ryan Lehr - A big defenseman with good puck handling abilities and has a mean streak. This guy led the Bulldogs last year in scoring...as a defenseman and Antigonish had a pretty good team!! He was 15th overall in league scoring and his leadership abilities will be a welcome addition at STU. Ryan Lehr

Matt Foster - He has tons of potential and if this guy can put it all together the sky is the limit. If he can adjust to the increased tempo in the AUS quickly you will see more and more of Matt. He lead his team in scoring last year and was tied for 11th overall in MJAHL scoring with 37 goals and 37 assists. Matt Foster.

Jeremy Turgeon - If you follow senior baseball at all you know that Jeremy won’t back down from a fight. He is a year removed from playing junior hockey and played senior hockey in Fredericton last year. If this guy wants it bad enough, he’ll make the most of his opportunities.

Scott Judson - A rugged little defender this guy will be a great addition to the Tommies rear line. He played last year in Moncton for the Beavers and was called up several times to the Q by the Moncton Wildcats. He isn’t afraid to work and go into the corners to get the puck. Scott Judson.

David Crossman - This guy can rock and was another solid pick-up on the Tommies blueline. One source said “Last year he played the max amount of games as an affiliate in the Q and never missed a game in the MJ.” Well folks here is another guy you don’t want to under estimate. David Crossman.

Corey Banfield - I know what your thinking, he’s to small to play in this league. That’s exactly what they said about Gretzky, nuff said? If he makes up in heart what he lacks in size, he’s all right in my books. Besides he was 3rd overall in MJAHL scoring last year with 44 goals and 51 assists and that isn’t to shabby. Corey Banfield.

Maxime Chamberland - You don’t think that this guy can light the lamp? Wrong! If he continues to play with Bateman and Bowers he is sure to rack up some points. He was scoring so much in Quebec Junior A last year, they called him up to play in St. John’s...in his overage year. How much was he scoring? Almost 3 points a game and combine that with almost a point a game with the Fog Devils, that isn’t bad at all. Maxime Chamberland.

Devan Praught - Wearing #19 for the Tommies has to come with some kind of responsibility. Devan is going to be a leader on this team in years to come. Right now he is able to throw a few hits and hopefully get a few goals. He spent most of last year with the Rocket before going to Summerside. He helped lead his team to the MJAHL finals.

Coach Eagles 2007-08 Tommies Outlook.

September 30th, 2007. Overtime does Tommies in again.
Tommies 5 - Panthers 6 OT (Exh)

You know the old saying, “Close only counts in horse shoes, hand grenades, and exhibition play.” Tonight on the Island was another good showing for the Tommies but the final result wasn’t perfect. Maxim Chamberland started the scoring for the Tommies in the first period, this was his first in STU colours. With the score tied at one going into the second, Jean Bourbeau scored 2 and David Crossman got one more to keep the game tied heading to the third. Justin Bowers scored the Tommies fifth goal in the third period to send the game to OT. The Panthers capitalized in overtime to keep the Tommies off the win column in the preseason. Guillaume Miszczak played the entire game and faced 32 PEI shots. The Tommies fired 21 shots at Dayne Davis. The Tommies face off against ST FX next Friday evening, 5 PM at the LBR in game 1 of the UNB Fall Classic Tournament.

September 28th, 2007. Ravens clip Tommies in OT.
Tommies 2 - Ravens 3 OT (EXH)

In the confines of the new first year Northside arena the OUA first year Carleton Ravens found a little luck in defeating the Tommies. Carleton scored twice in the first period period to take an early 2 - 0 lead over STU. The home team replied with 2 of their own bang bang mid way through the second frame on the PP when Justin Bowers, from Jeff Bateman and Anthony Butera, blew the water bottle off the back of the net. Then only seconds later Paul Giallonardo tied it up from Maxime Chamberland and Jeff Bateman.

Just before the final seconds ticked away in the third period the Tommies came oh so close to winning but the goal post for Carleton had different plans. In OT defenceman Ryan Lehr made a beautiful end to end rush with the puck and it ended up lying in the crease but the follow up Tommie couldn’t poke it home. The Ravens scored with 28 seconds to go on a top shelf goal past Matt Davis. Matt played the entire game and looked sharp. The Tommies look for their first win in exhibition action Sunday afternoon against UPEI in Charlottetown. Gleaner Story.

September 27th, 2007. Bell ringing in Phoenix this year.

Thatcher Bell has signed on to be a Phoenix Roadrunner for the 2007-08 season. Well “meep meep” Thatcher and best of luck in Arizona. PRR Story.

Schedule Correction. I just noticed this evening that changes have been made to the Tommies regular season schedule.

The Tommies first game of the season was suppose to take place at Moncton on Wednesday October 10th. This has been rescheduled for Saturday October 13th at Moncton. The regular scheduled game for Friday October 10th against PEI at the LBR has been moved to Saturday December 1st. This was probably done at the request of PEI to facilitate their trip to play NCAA schools that weekend. It also means that Tommie fans can trek to Moncton on Saturday evening to catch a great hockey game.

Just a quick note to you fans out there. In a web site cleaning effort, if there is a specific news story from last year that you’re interested in on the site, please feel free to copy them. I will be deleting some archival stories soon. I will also be deleting Tommies News as the stories have typically ended up on the front page. Tommies vs. Ravens.

September 23rd, 2007. Lady Tommies ready for new season.

The Lady Tommies started off their 2007-08 pre-season in Antigonish on Saturday night. With X still stinging from last years huge upset in the play-offs against STU, you knew they would seek a little pay back in this game. The ladies started off strong early in the first when Caroline Hammerheim potted one from Boudreau and Walls. The next four were X’s and that is how the game ended 4 to 1. The rookies got a taste for what it will take to beat one of the AUS power houses. Today’s scheduled exhibition game against the Doe Squirrels was cancelled but no big deal because we’ll see our old friends next week.

Ashley Duguay, Nicole Ernst, and Shana Noseworthy were all scratches from the X game. Ernst and Noseworthy with injury while Duguay was visiting her father in the hospital. We wish Mitch Duguay a speedy recovery, as his presence at the game was missed.

The new bodies in 07-08 roster are as follows: Mia Leander, goaltender, from the Swedish Elite league. She stopped 37 of 41 shots in the start against X. Stephanie Wilson, forward, from Leo Hayes High, Fredericton NB. She was playing D in high school but with her size and shot she’ll make a difference up front. The most recent addition is Jessica Holt of Woodstock NB. This hard working Carleton County kid comes to us from Boston University and is not eligible to play defence for the Tommies until the end of October. Dominique Bernier is another defender from Edmonton Alberta. She played for Notre Dame Prep School last year and is looking forward to the competitive AUS this year. Last but certainly not least is Josey Chamberlain and Kathleen Boyle both of whom we introduced you to a few months ago. Welcome all and here is to a spectacular season.

Don’t forget that the Ladies Tommies Media Night is this Friday September 28th. Tickets are available from the Athletics office.

Jennifer Botterill is guest speaker, local MLA and STU alumnus Kelly Lamrock will be the MC and Mr.Trevor Doyle will be handling the auction. Up for bids at the auction will be two jerseys, one a signed Team Canada jersey from this year's World Champion winning Canadian Team and also a STU game jersey. So for all those STU fans who would love to have an authentic jersey, come early and bid often.

September 21st, 2007. Squirrels to much for Tommies.
Tommies 1 - Squirrels 8. Exh.

If I said it was close for the first 30 minutes would any one care? Probably not, so I will tell you that Jean Bourbeau from Devan Praught was the lone STU goal scorer. Matt Davis and Guillaume Miszczak shared the goal tending duties. Devan Praught and Ryan Lehr both looked strong in their Tommies debut. In a note to other AUS teams, the Squirrel Nest has been replenished with ample tree rats to make life a little more miserable for all.

September 20th, 2007. Presidents Cup tomorrow.

The best rivalry in CIS hockey begins anew tomorrow evening at 7PM when our St. Thomas Tommies travel across campus to play UNB. The 2nd annual Presidents Cup will be at stake when the 2007-08 editions of both teams take to the ice. The Squirrels will take on a determined young Tommies team that will be more than willing to take a few cracks at the defending CIS champions. Good luck gentlemen.

August 27th, 2007. New recruits heading for STU.

As published on the official Tommies website, big defenceman Ryan Lehr and forward Devan Praught are suiting up with the Green and Gold. Rumours around the circuit also have forward Maxime Chamberland and defenceman Guillaume Veilleux joining the Tommies. Other MJAHL recruits have also been mentioned in possible signings.
