The Tommies lost a big game tonight to Moncton and find themselves on the outside looking in on a play-off spot. With two shorthanded markers in the second period, Moncton cruised to a 6 to 4 win. Dalhousie also won this evening beating St.-FX 5 to 4.
Scoring for the Tommies tonight was Brad Gallant tying the game at one in the first period. U de M scored the next two goals early in the second before Max Chamberland scored on the PP from Jason Cassidy to slim the lead. Moncton would score three more times in the second frame to pull this game out.
Other goal scorers for the Tommies were Devan Praught and Scott Judson with two seconds left in the game. Charles Lavigne suffered the loss allowing all six goals and was pulled with 5:04 remaining in the second period. Ben MacFarlane came on in relief and was brilliant by times, stopping everything thrown his way.
The Tommies had better regroup quickly as they face UPEI Friday night at the LBR. Daily Gleaner: Tommies slip out of playoff position
we need an upset saturday more than ever now. We can beat PEI in our rink. Good to see Juddy and Gallant get a goal in a losing effort. Seems like a quiet night from the WWL

It is now time that Coach Eagles be removed,he no longer seems able to motivate this (his) collection of players and once again seems destined for the basement,it looks like the team no longer responds and have stopped playing for this coach. In both the X and last nights game the team just did not show up and have stopped playing for this coach.
ReplyDeleteEagles is responsable for this collection of players and is responsable for not being able to motivate these players to a better standard,I believe that he has rode his pony( former NHL player) to death and was and has been overrated as a coach and should be removed. How far into the toilet does STU mens hockey have to go before something is done? The fact that he holds the A/D's job is another disgrace and should be corrected by administration asap,it was a mistake and will continue to be so,St.Thomas deserves a properly credentialed experienced Atheletic Director and not some former NHL player with at best dubioue qualifications,it is time to clean house.
Before you get your knickers in a knot Video guy, i did not post the comment above.
ReplyDeleteEagles is doing justice in neither role. I read, some posts ago, where players?fans? are on the case of the female coach also. it seems like two low achieving coaches have formed a good old boys club. I see the girls are doing better this year, but who else in Nb is receuiting any players? UNB is only club and MTA is destined to be club soon. The fans created an opening for eagles and they will most likily have to rid the team of eagles also.
SHGTTM
Good bye chief cook and bottle washer of this current dilema in Mens hockey;Eagles has demonstrated for long enough that his recruiuting philosophies do not work are and are naively held. There are a few players present in the line-up with too many support players with unrealistic expectations to perform and it doesen't look like it's going to get any better, recent team efforts or lack of would indicate that the team is neither good enough nor do they want to play for the current coach.
ReplyDeleteIt was a mistake to appoint this man as A/D and it would be a mistake to let him to continue in either capacity.
We have a #1 goalie,3 d-men who have to babysit the other 3 most nights, maybe,I say maybe 3 top 6 forwards and 15 other 3rd and 4th liners,an overabundance to say the least, and what Eagles cannot escape is that he has built this team and coaches this team and must take full responsability for this. It's not the fans,it's not the mostly hard working players it's Eagles and he is responsable for he has created this mess.
The new president must act in resolving this problem as STU mens hockey cannot get any lower into the toilet.
If the players aren't playing, who's fault is that?
ReplyDeleteIf the players aren't skilled enough to play, who's fault is that?
If you don't have enough skilled players, who's fault is that?
How long is enough?
How long is a sub .500 team acceptable?
Who makes the decisions at STU and when do they act?
In regard to the women, that team has gotten better ever year. Don't see a problem with them.
we slip out of the playoffs but we have still some time to go and we lose 2 in a row and the haters are back. Not surprising. Yeah, lets blame Eagles. You guys just sit in the stands and dont know anything. Im down in the locker rooms between periods and he tries to get his team fired up to play. The team needs a spark and Eagles is doing all he can.
ReplyDeleteI still find it funny when we win a game, no one is saying anything, but when we lose, OMG, everyone is a hater.
Like I also said before, Eagles being AD ALSO has nothing to do with this team. For this team to get into the playoffs, its on the team (PLAYERS and coaches and staff) shoulders, not solely Eagles.
And everyone, paragraphs are your friend. Kinda hard to read a huge rant with spelling mistakes and no paragraphs. Kinda discredits your thoughts.

The answers to the above questions:
ReplyDeleteMike Eagles
Mike Eagles
Mike Eagles
It has been already too long now,he inherited a good team from Coach Smith.
Same as above,it's too long now.
The answer to that is complicated as Eagles is his own Boss( he must be releaased from both jobs.
Womens hockey is doing just fine and this is a Harperian red herring.
The sad thing is that there are more than enough former Tommies strategically placed in the hockey world who Mike for all intents and purposes ignores their council, any number of Frederictonians when describing Eagles use adjectives such as strange,non-communicative and control freak who really is unable for many reasons able to sell the University program to prospects,so why have him recruiting? at the very least he shoulf be relieved of his A/D and recruiting responsabilities and concentrate on coaching the players that are recruited, recruited by someone who can discern which are the best players.
It has been over 8 years since he took over the Team and it has been a steady run to the toilet and thye team is back not even to where it was 8 years ago,a team who for whatever reason is not putting out for the Coach, time for a change? you're not kidding and as soon as possable.
Bottom line, the coach has to take responsibility when a team fails to reach expectations. The Tommies should be better than a 7th place team at this point in the season. Aiming to finish in 6th place really shouldn't be the goal either, but it seems to be with this head coach/athletic director. One of the post talked about how little attention he pays to the diehard STU fans and alumni. Maybe thats why they're only drawing 300 fans a game. How sad is that? This team had a big game last week against St. FX and there were about 300 fans in the rink. People have stopped caring, partly because the team sucks and partly because they see little hope down the road. It's time for a new person to take over and change the culture around here. As for the women's team, Murphy seems to have developed a pretty good program. They have meet the Tommies dinner and stuff like that, so he's trying to sell more than just the team itself. Maybe a new young energic coach is needed on the men's side to breathe some fresh air into what appears to be a decaying program.
ReplyDeletei have been watching this site from a distance now so this is just crazy talk. All i see is the same arguments over and over again. Like, cant anyone else think of a good, legit argument instead of saying eagles this, eagles that. Its not like Mike is wearing the gear and playing 60 minutes a night. I would be very surprised if other stu teams had websites and if they do bad they should release eagles from being A/D as well.
ReplyDeleteCome up with new argument everyone. STU is only a point out of the playoffs, no need for a lynch mob. Too late in the season for any jobs to be lost.
It's the players that play, sure, but Eagles is responsible for not being able to build the team talent wise to compete with the upper echelon of the AUS. Can Eagles recruit the 4-5 TOP LINE players that are required to turn the team into a contender? No more depth 2nd/3rd/4th liners. High end talent is what is needed now. If you are satisfied with mediocrity, good for you.
ReplyDeletewell how about this argument. UNB can recruit because they have a winning program. Forget about course offerings, these people come to play hockey, it is most of what they know. Professional hockey is their goal. If STU had a winnig program, they could also recruit better players. In order to begin a winning program, after having a losing program for years, something has to change up. What might that be? Sorry Video Guy, it has to be the coach. You get rid of all the players and new guys have to be recruited to play for a coach who has done nothing for how many years??? Sorry, they will not come. They need to be recruited under a strong coach who plans to build a program that is strong in the Atlantic division. Coaches know they are hired to be fired. I want to get back to the days when you had to get to the LBR to find a seat. The best products in the rink are the hot dogs, not the team on the ice. I have no comment on the ladies team other than who ever has the most money to play players seems to win.
ReplyDeleteSo for the women it's NOT about a quality program, only money. But for the men, there's no money involved, it's all about the program and only the program. Something NUTTY about that argument.
ReplyDeletenothing nutty. The guys get the same money where ever they go. Major Junior hockey pays for that. Not so with female. The university pays their way. Books are open on that one. Go to the website and see who pays out the bucks. STU does. How do you think all of those European players come to STU....money money money. No one else can afford them.
ReplyDelete"The guys get the same money where ever they go"
ReplyDeleteI think we all know that isn't true, but that would create a totally different tangent here.
for every year of major they get a year university do they not???
ReplyDeleteAh yes, a year for every year, but under the table... that's another story
ReplyDeleteHa ha, you're right. Look at the semi pro team at UNB. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou are comparing every program to UNB's. There are several other teams who compete on an annual basis and are successful. Having said that, STU is not. I guess we have several choices, 1. fire all of the players 2. remain status quo at the bottom of the league hoping for the giant play off upset and entertaing 300 fans per game.
ReplyDelete3. getting a new coach and selling a new program to recruit players.
Argue good coach, bad coach on this website for 7 more years.
