Tommies trounce Tigers

After a disappointing turn of events last night against the X-Men, St. Thomas rebounded nicely with a convincing 9 to 3 win versus Dalhousie. Eight Tommies had multiple points tonight and the Welcher, Eagles, Labonte line got on track with an impressive 11 points.

The first period was a tight affair with the score being 2 to 1 at the end. Labonte and Gallant scored for STU. The Tommies and their fans received a big scare when Bryan Main was taken to hospital after being removed from the ice on a stretcher following a heavy collision in the corner with Tiger Ben Van Lare. Reports were positive on his condition at the end of the game and we are all hopeful that Bryan is OK.

STU started off a little hesitant in the second frame as their thoughts must have been with their teammate. It took until 3:11 before Corey Banfield notched his first of the season and the flood gates began to open. The Tommies added a goal from Wes Welcher at 8:02 on the PP that chased Josh Disher from the Tigers net. New recruit Bobby Nadeau came in but would fare no better. Goals by Kenton Dulle and Matt Eagles would give the Tommies a 6 to 1 lead after 2.

After last night's third period collapse everyone waited to see which St. Thomas team would take the ice in the third. It was the good one. Alex Labonte scored his second of the game at 1:10 to keep things rolling. Devan Praught and Jason Cassidy added powerplay markers to cement the victory. Dalhousie scored two late period goals past Charles Lavigne but it was too little too late.

Final shots on goal were 34 to 30 for STU. Labonte, Welcher, Banfield, Tremblay, Praught, Eagles, Dulle, and Gallant all had a multiple point game.

Matt Eagles was the first star tonight contributing 4 points in the win. Next game is Wednesday night versus the Squirrels at the LBR. Other games tonight saw UNB roll over Saint Mary's 7 to 4, Moncton down X 5 to 3 and Acadia beat UPEI 4 to 1.

In women's action the Lady Tommies defeated Mt. Allison 4 to 2. Hopefully we will get some details to follow.

  1. That was a great game tonight,to make up for the disappointment last night.Glad to hear that it is positive news on Bryan Main.
The Squirrels had better bring their A game on Wednesday night, because they will need it.
Even if they do, STU will still beat them.I hope it is not Thayer Doyle's night to referee, because the 2 points will be the Squirrels.

  2. With all due respect STU would not be able to match UNB's A game.

Impressive win by the Tommies tonight though.

  3. it should be a dandy game. I think people will start to realize that STU is a very good team. If they just work on the defensive side of the puck, like i predicted at the beginning of the season, playoffs for STU. I think its more STU better bring their A game against UNB. Games with UNB have been weird at the LBR, its either a blowout with UNB winning and STU winning (still counting that 10-4 trouncing 4 years ago) or its tight as hell, like the shootout at the first meeting of the LBR.

I hope Mainer is okay. Van Lare took out Wynn as well. But i dont know why MacGregor or Larsh are even playing AUS hockey. Riech put it best on the bench tonite "your an embarrasment"

How many times has Disher been pulled at the LBR in a row now?

  4. Word from the Tommies is that Bryan Main had a CT scan at the hospital, which was negative, and was released from hospital.
Good news after what looked like a scary situation.
Would be surprised to see him Wednesday, although that's just my guess.

  5. well thats good. He could wiggle his toes right after it happened. Mainer is a tough guy. If he could have gotten up, he would have.

  6. As a fan of all Hockey, I wonder how long before MTA or UPEI call it quits in girls hockey. They flounder at the bottom of the pack each year with little funding. Yet UNB, who was traditionally at the middle of the pack got axed?

  7. Well based on the UNB model women's hockey should be axed everywheres. If it doesn't bring in money get rid of it.

So based on that model every women's program in Canada at the University level should get the boot.

  8. I believe that STU can match The Squirrels A game. I am glad that Bryan is good and perhaps as a precaution should sit out Wednesday"s game.
STU will for sure be in the playoffs, they are way better then last year.

  9. I'm curious, Oilslick, on your thoughts as to why you think STU can match UNB's "A" game? I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, I'm just curious as to your why you feel this way.

  10. Also curious why if Thayer Doyle is reffing it's an automatic 2 points for UNB. You probably don't even know who Chuck McTague is but there are no longer any biased refs in this league. There are som bad ones (not naming names) but they are "bad" towards both teams. I'd even argue that UNB gets hit with worse reffing then STU does the majority of the time.

  11. Any comments, Oilslick?

  12. I actually do remember Chuck McTague,I wrote a many a letter to the editor about his refereeing. They were not good.Thayer Doyle may not be as bad,but is very close.
Whenever he refs a STU-UNB game he calls more against STU then theSquirrels. At times I think he looks for things to call.
STU looks to be a lot better team so I believe that they could beat UNB.

  13. While I believe it is possible STU can beat UNB (as they are much improved over last year and should be in most games)...if UNB brings their 'A' game I don't think STU, or any team in Canada for that matter, can beat them...
