Tommies add D-Man Ian Saab

Ian Saab
Courtesy stationnation
The St. Thomas Tommies have added former Saint John Sea Dog Ian Saab for the second half of the AUS season.  The rugged defenseman has played his past four seasons in the QMJHL for Saint John, Lewiston, and Cape Breton.

Known primarily for his solid defensive play, the 6'1" Halifax native is by all accounts  a great team mate and should blend in well to the Tommies defense first approach employed under Head Coach Pat Powers. Ian has also played with a handful of current STU players including Spencer MacDonald, John MacDonald, Jordan Thomas, and Jordan Moore.

Look for Saab to play a tough "look after your own end first" type of hockey game.  He has a mean streak a mile wide and doesn't have a problem bringing the dirt when he needs to.

In the third period the Mounties came out of the dressing room on a mission holding the Tommies to no shots on goal and putting eight shots on Tommies keeper Makayla Campbell. Tommies win Lou Chabot Memorial Game

As predicted, the Tommies bounced back following their home opener loss last night and went on to defeat the DAL Tigers 5-2 in the ANNUAL LOU CHABOT GAME tonight.

We were pleased to have Lou's mother with us once again, and happy the boys were able to give her a win. Rookie Brendan Childerley with 2 goals and an assist led the way for the Tommies who out played and out shot their opponents 29-19.

Dal opened the scoring at the 33 second mark and led 1-0 after the 1st. The Tommies roared back in the 2nd as Childerley went to work scoring both his goals, the first unassisted and the second assisted by Cameron & Zanbeek to give STU a 2-1 lead heading into the 3rd.

The Tigers scored first in the 3rd to tie the game but the Tommies would not be denied on this night as they reeled off 3 unanswered goals by Jon Bonneau (Martin, Levesque); rookie Jason Trott (Cameron, Childerley) and Rob Zanbeek (Levesque, Cameron).

Alex St. Arnaud who got the start and win in nets for the Tommies was solid, making 17 saves. Brendan Childerley was named "Player of the Game".  The Tommies move back to .500 and continue to impress under new coach Pat Powers.

Lady Tommies Win in Home Opener

The STU Tommies Women's hockey team faced off against the UPEI Panthers this afternoon in their 2013-2014 home opener, a game in which the Lady Tommies were coming in with an 0-2 record to start the season. The Tommies picked up the win over the Panthers.

The Tommies opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Emily Francis (Erin MacIsaac, Amanda Burns) 11:22 in the first. The period ended with the Tommies hanging on to their 1-0 lead. The shots were well favoured towards the Tommies, 17-3. Kristin Wolfe had an amazing toe save to keep the Tommies lead at the end of the first period.

Second period scoring opened at 5:44 with a goal from Erin MacIsaac (Teah Anderson and Emily Francis), at this point the flood gates opened. The Tommies added two more goals, the first scored by Emily Francis (Erin MacIsaac, Teah Anderson) and the second scored by Katie Brewster (Amanda Burns, Stephanie Gates). UPEI pushed hard and 13 shots on goal to STU's 6. UPEI was able to squeak one by Wolfe, the score at the end of the second period was 4-1. Overall shots were 23-16 in favour of the Tommies.

The third period started off with Cassidy McTaggart (Stephanie Gates, Jordan Miller) scored early in the third period at 1:11. The Tommies held off the pressuring UPEI Panthers to the very end of the third period. The Panthers had 8 shots on goal in the third to the Tommies 6.

The final score of the game was 5-1 Tommies, with the shots on goal 29-24 also for STU. This was a great bounce back win for the Tommies, who play again tomorrow at the Grant-Harvey Centre versus Mt. A.

Third period collapse does in Tommies

The Tommies opened the home portion of their season tonight on the wrong end of a 7 to 2 score.  The Acadia Axemen scored five third period goals to blow open an otherwise tight checking game through two periods.

STU opened the scoring at 6:29 of the 1st as rookie Brendan Childerley scored his 2nd of the season, assists to Cameron & Bernier.  The Axemen tied the game later in the first with a shorthanded marker at 17:50. Shots were 12-7 in favour of Acadia after one.

In the 2nd, Acadia scored first at 13:48 but the Tommies roared back to tie the game once again with a beauty PP goal by Colin Martin (Poulin, Cheremetiev). Shots 7-4 in favour of Acadia in 2nd.

In the 3rd, it was all Acadia, as they scored 5 unanswered goals and the wheels fell completely off. Jordan Thomas, who was injured in the 2nd period, did not return to action in the 3rd. Following Acadia's 6th goal at 6:33, Jon Groenheyde received a 5 minute match penalty and a game misconduct.  He will be suspended but for how long, we don't know.  Alex St-Arnaud finished the game in nets making several outstanding saves and allowing just one goal. Final shots on goal 31-17 favouring Acadia.

The Tommies will need to re-group as they face the DAL Tigers tomorrow evening in the ANNUAL LOU CHABOT GAME.  See you at the GHC.

X-Women defeat Tommies

The Lady Tommies got down early to St-FX this afternoon in Antigonish and couldn't find a way out of the hole they dug, dropping a 5 to 2 decision to the X-Women.

X scored two goals in the first 11 minutes of the game before rookie Myfanwy Thomson(Steinert, Burns) got STU on the board with a powerplay marker with 40 seconds left in the first.

The Tommies would tie the game at 11:21 of the middle frame on a goal by Jordan Miller (Francis, Marcelline) but X responded just under 3 minutes later to retake the lead.  The Tommies couldn't muster anymore offense and the X-Women would score an insurance marker at 15:11 of the third and an empty netter with 13 seconds remaining in the game.

Kristin Wolfe was tagged with the loss stopping 33 of 37 shots while STU mustered 16 shots the other way.  St. Thomas was 1 for 4 on the powerplay and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill this afternoon.

After a tough 0 and 2 weekend the Tommies will have until next Saturday to lick their wounds before entertaining the UPEI Panthers in their home opener at 2 PM.

Interesting fact about today's game, three players had fathers who played for St. Thomas.  For the Tommies; Amanda Burns - Chris Burns 1990-94, Amy Duffield - Don Duffield 1979-83, and X-Women rookie Connor Garagan - Pat Garagan 1980-81, 1982-83.

Tommies get first win for Coach Powers

Coach Pat Powers collected his first win as STU's new coach as the Tommies defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 4 to 3 in AUS men's hockey action tonight from Halifax.

The Tommies opened the scoring at 6:24 of the 1st period with rookie Brendan Childerley (Thomas-Martin) getting his first of the regular season in Green and Gold. Colin Martin, Yuri Cheremetiev and Randy Cameron with the game winner also scored for STU.  Felix Poulin and Jon Bonneau each collected a pair of assists while Sebastien Bernier and Marc-Andre Levesque had one each.

STU held period leads of 2-1 and 3-2. Tommies were out shot 25-21 as Jon Groenheyde recorded the win. Tommies were .500 on the PP going 3 for 6, while Dal were 1 for 7.

Colin Martin was the Subway player of the game with a goal and one assist. Tommies return to action next weekend as they host Acadia and Dal on Friday and Saturday. Start time for both games 7:00 PM. See YOU at the Grant-Harvey.

In women's hockey action the Tommies lost a tight 1 - 0 affair against the same Dalhousie Tigers.  Rookie Makayla Campbell was strong in her regular season debut for STU.

Tommies drop opener to Axemen

A strong effort by Jon Groenheyde wasn't enough for STU as three third period goals propelled the Acadia Axemen past the Tommies 3 to 1.  Two of the three Acadia goals were on the powerplay as time and time again STU was forced to defend shorthanded.

The Tommies struck first as rookie D-man Jordan Moore (Thomas, Childerley) squeaked one past the Acadia goalie at 15:22 of the opening period.  STU had the only power play in the period but were out shot 22 to 11.

In the second frame the refs went to work and awarded 8 minutes of PP time to Acadia.  Jonny G stood his ground and made some amazing saves to keep the game at 1 - 0 heading to the third.  Shots were 21 to 6 in the period.

The third saw the calls continue to go in Acadia's favour.  Brett Thompson would score at 6:13 on the PP and again at 7:17 to see Acadia surge ahead.  Another Acadia PP goal at 18:46 sunk any chance of a STU comeback.  The Tommies finally got their second powerplay of the game with 42 seconds left to play.  Final shots were 58 to 23 for the Axemen.

The Tommies will head to Halifax tomorrow night and tangle with the Dalhousie Tigers at 7PM from the Halifax Forum.  The game can be seen live at www.AUStv.ca

Men's Tommies Fall to UdeM in Final Pre-Season Game - Take Shoot Out

Derek Froats had a strong game for STU tonight
In the final pre-season tune-up game, the Tommies fell to UdeM in Grand Falls, NB, 6-2. The Tommies had a quick goal scored on them in the first minute of the game but played even for the rest of the period.

The Tommies answered back with two goals in the second, the first goal scored by Stephen Sanza at 1:37 from Brendan Childerley and Marc-Andre' Levesque on the power-play. The second goal was scored by Brendan Childerley (his first as a Tommie) at 3:34, assisted by Randy Cameron and Stephen Sanza. However the flood gates opened for UdeM as they scored three quick goals shortly after and took a 4 to 2 lead into the third period.

The third period, Moncton tacked on two more goals to give them a final score of 6-2, the shots on goal were 34-31 for STU, Alexandre' St-Arnaud took the loss in net.

Tonight's game had an added feature of a shoot out, in which the Tommies sent Robert Zandbeek, Jonathan Bonneau, and Marc-Andre' Levesque to centre ice, both Bonneau and Levesque scored while Alex St-Arnaud stopped two of three shooters.

The Tommies start their regular season next Friday night against Acadia in Wolfville.

Tommies cruise to victory over RMC

St. Thomas and new coach Pat Powers picked up their first wins of 2013-14 season with a 5 to 1 victory tonight over the visiting RMC Paladins.  The Tommies scored in the first minute of the game and never looked back.

A pretty passing play resulted in Colin Martin's first goal of the pre-season as he took a nice feed from Randy Cameron and Steve Sanza and buried it while standing in the crease at 53 seconds.  Sebastien Bernier (Sanza, Levesque) fired a wrister that found the back of the net at 8:56 on the powerplay to give STU a 2 -0 lead.  That score would hold until the second but Steve Sanza did clink one off the post on a shorthanded breakaway later in period.  Shots were 8 to 7 in the first.

STU scored a goal early in the second that was waved off because it was kicked in but it didn't matter because seconds later at 3:19 Marc-Andre Levesque (Bernier, Leduc) would extend the lead to three on a two man PP.  Alexandre Leduc (Zandbeek, Brown) would pad the lead even further at 12:59 making it 4 to 0.  Jon Groenheyde played the first two periods facing 15 shots.

Alex St-Arnaud came into the game in the third period for STU.  Randy Cameron (Sanza, Levesque) scored on the PP when he skated out towards the blueline and fired a bullet that went in off the post at 1:53 for the Tommies' fifth goal of the night.  The Paladins' Scott Domenico -with some tenacious forechecking - ruined the shut out bid at 4:45 scoring shorthanded.

No more goals were scored and the final shots were 35 - 23.  Not bad considering Felix Poulin, Sawyer Hannay, and Kody Orr were out of the line up and Derek Froats left the game in the second intermission.

The Tommies next game will be in Grand Falls on October 12th when they take on U de M.
