Tommies cruise to victory over RMC

St. Thomas and new coach Pat Powers picked up their first wins of 2013-14 season with a 5 to 1 victory tonight over the visiting RMC Paladins.  The Tommies scored in the first minute of the game and never looked back.

A pretty passing play resulted in Colin Martin's first goal of the pre-season as he took a nice feed from Randy Cameron and Steve Sanza and buried it while standing in the crease at 53 seconds.  Sebastien Bernier (Sanza, Levesque) fired a wrister that found the back of the net at 8:56 on the powerplay to give STU a 2 -0 lead.  That score would hold until the second but Steve Sanza did clink one off the post on a shorthanded breakaway later in period.  Shots were 8 to 7 in the first.

STU scored a goal early in the second that was waved off because it was kicked in but it didn't matter because seconds later at 3:19 Marc-Andre Levesque (Bernier, Leduc) would extend the lead to three on a two man PP.  Alexandre Leduc (Zandbeek, Brown) would pad the lead even further at 12:59 making it 4 to 0.  Jon Groenheyde played the first two periods facing 15 shots.

Alex St-Arnaud came into the game in the third period for STU.  Randy Cameron (Sanza, Levesque) scored on the PP when he skated out towards the blueline and fired a bullet that went in off the post at 1:53 for the Tommies' fifth goal of the night.  The Paladins' Scott Domenico -with some tenacious forechecking - ruined the shut out bid at 4:45 scoring shorthanded.

No more goals were scored and the final shots were 35 - 23.  Not bad considering Felix Poulin, Sawyer Hannay, and Kody Orr were out of the line up and Derek Froats left the game in the second intermission.

The Tommies next game will be in Grand Falls on October 12th when they take on U de M.
