Squirrels offence goes nuts

Going to keep this short and sweet. No need to get into the gory details but the second period was the Tommies' undoing again tonight. STU led 3 to 2 after the first period but UNB scored five in the second en route to a 9 to 4 win.

Kenton Dulle, Tyler Dietrich, Mike Reich and Devan Praught scored for the Tommies. STU remains one point behind Dalhousie for the final playoff berth. The Tigers lost to Saint Mary's 7 to 3. Key match up coming up for STU on Friday night in Halifax against Dalhousie.

  4. Eagle haters come forth???? In all fairness to players and coaches, UNB is not a good measuring stick. They are beating everyone

  5. IMO, the above comments sum up everything that is wrong with STU hockey, "UNB is not a good measuring stick. They are beating everyone." If a team doesn't strive to be the best then why are they even bothering to play in the first place?

  6. i think Video Guy and others who share his view point are creating the united voice that all is well with STU. "keep the coaches", "everyone is trying hard", "they are building people". Those are his and their words. They feel that those of us who want to get competitive again at STU are STU haters.....no we are not...get new coaches and build a program.

  7. Video guy is so smart, we all love him. What a bonehead, they are terrible try again when they have a new coaching staff and some talent.

  8. All is not well at STU ! and negative posters are not Eagles haters but rather more realistic appraisers of the current situation which has gone on far too long ie 8 years.
Not enough top 6 ers and top 4 d-men and an overabundance of support players( there are some good ones on this team example Matt Eagles) but you can only dress 6 at a time.
When prolonged under recruiting, coupled with over estimating available talent continues then a situation that now exists at STU happens.
Higgins made a fatal appointment when he handed the A/D job to the current coach( been there, done that before)and what qualifications of the incumbant gave that any credability.

The history of Eagles as a recruiter is well documented and mostly a failure ,time for a change asap.

  9. Umm...isn't UNB the measuring stick for everyone right now??

  10. alright, let the call out show continue. If anyone wants to call me a bonehead or a dummy, call it to my face the NEXT stu home game. None of you will because of the safety and comfort of your home computers. You all know where I am at the games.

UNB is just too deep. We got killed on special teams. 5 on 5 was alright, but their powerplay AND PK was very strong. Everyone tried hard last night, even after that awful second period.

Once again STU fan, Eagles as AD has zip to do with him as the hockey coach.

Nobody here has the first clue how to recruit, coach, motivate. But everyone here acts like they do. And cant we just talk about the game for once?

  11. Not one of us have said that Eagles doesn't need help in the recruiting department.

    That is obvious.

However, until we get a money bank like UNB, this is just the status quo. We only have liberal arts classes to draw from. We pay a lot of money to get players here, in fact they pay the most money, or close to it, in scholarships, to get players here.

But no one wants to come here. It's a fact. Get used to it. Until we win with the players we have, we won't get any better.

    That's a fact.

  12. Video guy. you are more.....misunderstanding than any one person I know. You keep asking what Eagles holding two jobs has to do with it....figure it out...he is his own boss! I would have a great work situation if I was my own boss. I would never have to be accountable to anyone. And who goes to Eagles to complain about Eagles...no one would, except fans. and fans are, by staying away in droves. We are going to sink millions into a new rink, we recruit female players from Europe at 10K a pop and then say we don't have money to attract players??? duh come to fredericton to play hockey for UNB or STU? which would you do. If we can't attract players in hockey, then get out of hockey. Go to football or something where we can compete, or get a new AD and coach.

  13. Throw UNB out of the equation. They're the Cadillac of CIS hockey programs right now. They've won, they'll be hosting nationals for two years...the fish are jumping into the boat. It's a matter of who you say no to.
Look at what Eagles recruited for his team this year: a goaltender who, until recently, was tops in the AUS. He recruited his entire top line and his son is a solid second/third liner who works hard and will improve. For next year, he's already locked up Mathieu Melanson, a very skilled player who has the talent to finish among the top 10 scorers in the league.
He's had ongoing conversations with an ECHL kid who, unlike Ben Wright, decided to remain a pro. You don't get them all.
Yes, the blueline needs an upgrade. I think Eagles realizes that more than anybody. But until last night, his team pushed UNB as hard as anybody, with three one goal losses, two of them in OT.
Depending on the effort his team gives, they're right in the rink with anybody, except for lapses and/or mistakes that can happen over the course of a game.
I do think the jobs need to be split. I felt it was conspicuous that Eagles the AD wasn't there at the reception to welcome the first crop of Wall of Famers. His wife was there and did a nice job as ambassador, but those are the kind of things where the AD needs to be there and he needs to speak and schmooze with alumni and their families and not be too busy down the hill preparing his team for the game ahead.

  14. Eagles did do a good recruiting job last year, for sure. The problem is, he had a lot of holes to fill. There is good depth. Problem is, there is little top line talent. Dulle, and next year Melanson, are your top forwards. Need one, preferably two, like them. Need two top pairing d-men. Hopefully Eagles can recruit even better next year. This is what is needed to move up in the AUS.

  15. STU can compete with UNB or any other team, as said above, PK and PP are not good for STU, on the pp stu hardly ever takes a shot and when on pk some players are not working hard enough, overheard last night behind bench eagles giving it to Andricrapolous for his lack of effort, he didn't practice all week, but still played in the game and his effort showed. most players were giving it their all, but after eagles blasting players, they were back on the ice for next shift, need to show that if you want the ice time, work for it, other fans in the stands commented that if
UNB took stupid penalties like STU were taking they would not see another shift that game, not all the blame goes on Eagles or some of the players as most were working hard, but UNB does not give up and keeps coming hard, that is why they are in first place.

    ReplyDelete
  16. There is a lot of talent at STU and Eagles is a good coach, but the players need to work hard for a full 60 minutes and not just the first 20, if they gave their all for a full game, they could be as good as UNB or better than any other team. as above, there is a reason UNB is undefeated, they work hard for a full 60 minutes and keep shooting and going after rebounds, they never stop coming. STU can do it, if they want it bad enough.

  17. Are you PIDS really that dumb? Do you really believe that your 10 or so MJAHL grads plus 10 or so middle of the road CHLers are better then 20 of the top major junior recruits for the entire CIS? Give you damn head a shake.

If your guys can't get up for a 60 minute game against your biggest rival, it isn't ever going to happen. Dig your head out of the sand.

  18. ... and especially on a night in which you probably had more fans in the stands than in the last 2 or 3 games combined.

  19. It is too bad all these fans don't come out to other games besides the battle of the hills. It would be such a great boost for a team trying to make the playoffs to have that support every game. It has been said the seventh man can be effective.
So many people like to see both teams make the playoffs ,yet they don't show- up.

  20. To anon at 6:52pm: I agree...they do need to work hard for the full 60 minutes but doesn't that ultimately fall on the coaching staff? If they are not giving it their all the entire game every game they shouldn't be in the lineup. Like the person a couple posts up mentioned...STU has a player slack off in practice yet he is still playing (and lo and behold...slacks off in the game to) while at UNB if you don't practice hard all week you don't play. The coaching staff should show that not playing hard for a full 60 minutes will not be tolerated or rewarded...

  21. Sorry, I thought the person said AA didn't practice hard all week but he didn't practice at all...I assume he was injured...

  22. time to move along folks. Most fans pay to see a good hockey game or they turn out to support their team, or both. Eagles will fall before we get the latter. The fan base has fallen off Hockey at STU is a big money loser when you combine the two programs. This on the backs of the students. I realize that varsity sports in general don't make money, but if you get no student support, no community support, and fans in general dissappear what are your options? No one ever thought Football would disappear at UNB, no one ever suspected that female hockey would be cut from UNB. Hopefully committing a million or so bucks to a new rink will force the powers to be to stay committed to STU hockey, but if the programs folded tomorrow, it looks like a total of 400 people, including player, coaches, staffs and fans would have to find something else to do one night a week during the winter.

  23. The behind the scene power brokers will end Eagles coaching job at STU. It will just be messier, because they have no AD to discuss this with, so it gets ugly very fast. Remember his former guy who held two positions. The halls of STU have many people who will hear the fans and say okay time to move. Probably during this off season.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Off season is not soon enough if one has any hopes of salvaging the situation in time to be competitive for next season, now is the time!

  25. I'll be surprised if Dennis Cochrane, the caretaker president does anything. He's there for 18 months, to be the face who shakes hands and kisses babies during the 100th year celebrations. He's not about to come in and initiate any changes to the core programs. A new coach or AD would have to be there for longer than the 18 months Cochrane will be there, so he's not about to take on any responsibility like that.

  26. so Bill,

are you allowed to express an opinion or do you have to remain neutral in your position? I Wonder what the pulse is out there. This is a very small forum and it goes back and forth. I think the alumni lit up the powers on the last coaching change, some say "rum row" was responsible. Personally, I am beginning to care less how long Eagles stays as coach. If 300 fans are okay with the team then so be it. I think the huge issue is Eagles as AD. I hear more and more complaints that the hockey programs need to be revamped. I cannot imagine how an evaluation is carried out on the two programs? Accountability appears to be sadly lacking. If you were your own boss, how would you be accountable? Would you base your success on fan turnout, on ice record, player survey etc, and what would you do with the results. It seems that in the strong AUS mens side We can't climb the ladder and on the women's side we climb when other teams quit(UNB), or other teams don't have recruiting dollars, MTA, PEI. How effective are our programs and who answer to whom for that?

  27. I'd rather not comment or express my opinions here before I do so in the paper. They pay my salary after all.
I will say, I think they need to split Eagles' duties and make him one or the other.
