Huskies down Tommies in O/T

The Tommies were the better team for two of the 4 periods this afternoon at the LBR but it wasn't good enough to pull out a victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies. SMU won the game at 1:16 of OT to secure the two points with a 3 to 2 decision.

After a scoreless first period that saw the Tommies out shoot SMU 11 to 7, Lyse Rossignol scored at 0:23 of the second when the Huskies' goalie tried in vain to cover the puck but couldn't find it before Rossignol got it by her. Andrea Fischer and Lucrese Nussbaum got the assists.

The lead held until 16:46 when Saint Mary's Captain Kori Cheverie went end to end, undressed the entire STU team, and just slipped the puck past Kristin Wolfe in the STU net. The goal was shorthanded to add insult to injury. SMU held the shot advantage in the period 12 to 8.

STU brought their game in the third but Katie Brewster took a hooking penalty at 7:12 and things turned for the worse. Sarah Maynard put the puck up high over Wolfe at 8:14 on the PP and this set the SMU bench wild.

Things got worse for STU as they received a lengthy 2 man advantage. After swarming the SMU net and doing everything but score, Jessica Holt was hurt in a collision fighting for the puck. Holt had to be helped off the ice with a lower body injury. This must have rallied the troops to get one for their teammate because off the resulting face-off Sweet Caroline Hammerheim got the game tying marker from Rossignol and Kelbaugh. Time of the goal was 13:14 on the PP. STU totally out classed the Huskies in the late part of the third but had to settle for overtime, out shooting SMU 12 to 5.

It only took until the 1:46 mark of O/T for the Huskies to settle the game when Danielle MacDougall scored the game winner. Final shots on goal were 32 to 26 for STU.

The Tommies will regroup tonight and face the Dalhousie Tigers tomorrow at 4 PM. Remember the game will be aired on 97.9 FM CHSR.
