Game 11 Live Blog STU 1 Acadia 5 Final

The Tommies fall 5-1 to the Axemen tonight. Max Chamberland scored the
only goal of the 3rd period when his centering pass went in off Zach
MacMillan. Corey Banfield and Kenton Dulle registered the assists.
Final shots were 39-26 for Acadia. An important game coming up for the
Tommies on Friday as they host Moncton at the LBR. With the loss STU
falls to 3-7-1 on the season, in 6th place, 1 point ahead of
Dalhousie.

Daily Gleaner: Tommies troubles continue

  1. That decent start STU had this year is quickly fading from memory...of course the injuries and suspensions haven't helped...neither has the fact that they have played their last 4 games against SMU and Acadia...if they don't beat Moncton on Friday though....

  2. I think playing Moncton willcure whatever ails them. There is a team in there and look out when it comes out.

No knives needed. Just take a look at the league standings.

  5. I posted, but it was cut. I think Eagles should resign from one of his positions. However, as I have said before, he will hang on and eventually he will be let go. Players have 5 years max at any university, so rebuilding programs have to start some where. We live in a strange city. $12 a pop to watch a non game at the AUC or $10 a pop to watch a non game at the LBR.

  6. Agreed, the knives will come out, but there are those who will defend a losing group year after year. UNB is finding top recruits to a top program. Almost to the point that they are too good for the league. Moncton is up and down and draw a crowd about as big as STU. Halifax teams draw little attention. Female have all gone down hill, except for STU and their unlimited bank roll. I wonder where it all will end? What can eagles do? he has unlimited support from those above him, but the product on the ice cannot attract players that UNB can. halifax is a huge center. perhaps we should be happy to stay middle of the pack and fight it out with the other teams that ebb and flow?

  7. Buying new uniforms always seems to cheer up the Tommies. I know it is a tadd bit more expensive than buying paper bags for the fans. Actually quite a bit more expensive. The cost of new home/away jersys vs paper bags for 80 fans!

  8. It shouldn't be that hard to sell STU as a place for hockey recruits. It's a nice little school with enough to offer the prospective student. Kids can also take specific courses at UNB and still be considered STU students. For one thing, the LBR is antiquated and an eyesore. The Tommies should play out of the O'Ree Place until the new place is ready. UNB can show a possible recruit the Aitken Centre: pretty huge advantage. But on the other side of the coin, newcomers coming into the STU program will get a chance to play right away. That could be a strong selling point. With the current group, don't forget, there are key injuries right now. So let's not get too depressed too soon Tommie fans. Lavigne seems like a solid addition. Give some of the rookies time to adapt. Matt Eagles will get better for sure. This team is definitely a playoff contender, especially now with Moncton going off the deep end.

  9. the tommies being on this losing skid has ZERO to do with Mike being AD and Head Coach. Its just a reason that people like to blame the Tommies and their losing ways.

Charlie is injured, Dieter, Crossy, Mainer are all hurt, Banny and Dulle may be suspended. That has nothing to do with the double job.

We have a week to prep for Moncton, who just got pumped 11-0 by SMU. So they are probably bag skating on monday. So lets all forget about the past 4 games and look forward to 2 points on friday night.

People should come up with better excuses than blaming Eagles. If people want to be blaming coaches, look at Eagles old coach Ron Wilson.

  10. It is not Eagles fault for STU not winning right now. He coaches ,the players play and the way they want to play is up to them.
For a 10 -0 team ,the Squirrels don't get fans unless they are giving tickets away.If I was a UNB fan ,I would think the place should be a sellout every game
I thought tickets were 10 dollars at the AUC,unless the playoffs, then are 12.I do believe at LBR are 8 dollars.
The Refs have not been kind to STU this year.

  11. As a UNB fan I will admit I have been quite dissapointed with the attendance so far this year. IMO they should have a couple games a year (maybe against the lesser teams like Dal and UPEI that don't normally bring in the biggest crowds) and set aside 1000-2000 seats/tickets for students (similar to what they do for the school district nights I guess)...you would get the same revenue from the 'regulars' as well as a ton of extra concession revenue...plus, maybe after exposing these people who wouldn't previously pay to go to a game to the quality product on the ice they would be more apt to come back...also, it would be nice to see some school spirit, which is pretty much non-existent at UNB games

    ReplyDelete
  12. The students at UNB should be embarrassed by their lack of support of not just the hockey team but all of its varsity sports. The hockey team is no. 1 in the country and yet, you never see students. It's a very apathetic group. Perhaps the team is too strong for its own good. It seems to me there was a piece written in the paper a while back suggesting that fans wouldn't go to the games because there wasn't any suspense about who was going to win. The university doesn't do much to sell the game to the students, either

    ReplyDelete
  13. yes because the logic of the more you win, the more fans you get has been proven so many times..that must explain the maple leafs attendance..hmmmmm And really Stu fans stop whining about the reffing, it's bad all around, not just bad for you guys, stop looking for excuses. And yes UNB should have more people in their stands, but it's alot more complex issue then win-loss record.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think the issue of Eagles' security in the two jobs will depend on who the new president of STU happens to be. Higgins doesn't care about athletics and admitted as much in a recent story in the paper.
If the new guy (or woman) has an interest in athletics, they may be curious how someone can run the athletic department and its highest profile program.
For the record, I think Mike does a good job. He suffers by comparison to the machine up the hill, but doesn't everybody?
The four game losing streak is a concern, but subtract the number one goalie and two blueliners from any lineup (other than UNB perhaps) and the team will struggle. I think I would have accepted the suspensions and gone without this past weekend though, rather than risk losing Dulle and Banfield. Hate to say it, but you knew they were going to get hammered on the road this past weekend against Saint Mary's anyway. Have Banfield and Dulle sit those out and get them back for a winnable game against Moncton on home ice.
Now, if they lose the appeal, they won't be available for that game.

  15. So true, Mr. Hunt, on everything.

Just to add something about Athletics at STU - too bad some of the other teams (even though they are ACAA and not AUS) could be thrown a few crumbs -maybe free socks (forget about a free pair of shoes!!). Think about it, $800 for one pair of skates, $200 per stick - how may sticks does the entire team go through in one year - and the other teams get pretty much nothing. Is it like this at other universities - the hockey program gets so much and the others get so little? Who decides what team gets what? Is it a committee, one person, is there a vote? Maybe an article in the Gleaner about funding for specific sports at various universities in Atlantic Canada and beyond could shed some light and be very interesting and informative.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 2 teams at STU play at the CIS level, both the men's and women's hockey teams. That's why there's a greater financial commitment to these two programs. These programs are the face of athletics at the school. Why does that bother you so much?

    ReplyDelete
  17. The Atlantic acronyms are AUS & ACAA. The Canadian ones are CIS & CCAA. If I were an athlete at STU and NOT in the hockey program I would be insulted by the above comment. Many of the other athletes and teams have had a lot of sucess over the years, so to say that hockey is the "face of athletics" at STU is a put-down to all the other athletes at the university, and not the right attitude. Besides, there is no ACAA hockey program for hockey, so there is no other option but to be in the AUS/CIS. I think the comment above was more about lack of funding for other athletes and why the huge gap. Is it REALLY because of the organization a team belongs to or are there other factors?? (If that's the case, maybe some of the other teams should join the CIS, but I'm sure it's not that simple)

  18. to hockey gets too much money guy,

quit your whining. Not once have you stated why you are getting so personal about why the hockey team gets so money. You dodge it everytime I ask. Besides, hockey is THE sport at St. Thomas, but that dosent mean the rugby team has no money for bus trips to Sackville or Halifax and has no rights to the same things the hockey team has. Not to mention they all get tracksuits with their sport and number on it. The way you are talking, the hockey team gets a state of the art facility to train and new jerseys and the rugby team has to sew their own numbers on their back.

Maybe state why you are so touchy with the subject then maybe I might have more respect for you as a poster.

  19. Video guy, talk about touchy.... Anyway, it's not how much the hockey team gets but how very little the other teams get. Of course, it's important that the hockey team has decent and proper equipment, etc., but it would be nice if there was a better budget for the other teams, (maybe a clothing allowance). ALL the athletes at STU make a huge commitment to their sport, with daily practices, overnight road trips, juggling school, homework, etc., and they too represent the university at home and away. Does the fact they are not CIS make them somehow less worthy, dedicated, or lesser athletes - I don't think so. Maybe a little more respect for them would be in order.

    ReplyDelete
  20. you dodged my question again. Why do you care so much about STU athletic budgets? You just went off on what you have been saying for the last month. The ACAA teams are worthy for playing for their school. But here is the difference....hockey players come to school for hockey, while the other athletes dont come to school for sports, that comes second.

  21. I suspect the mnoney guy is a frustrated hockey player who wasn't deemed good enough to play for the Tommies, even in their current state. So he's taking his puck and making sure everybody is as miserable as he is. That's what immaturity is all about.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Actually this is the first time I have commented on anything here (and it will probably be the last) and have no idea what that other person said last month. You are obviosuly confusing me with someone else (and I'm female and regretably, have never had the opportunity to play hockey) Some people seem extremely sensitive about anyone questioning anything to do with hockey, but I'm pretty sure I made it clear in my post that it was more about what some of the other teams are lacking. To video guy, it's not that I care so much about the athletics budget. I merely thought it was ok to voice an opinion here without being attacked, and I didn't think MY opinion was attacking the Tommies hockey team (maybe you should REALLY read the post again) And I thought the first purpose of attending university (for everyone) is to get an education and sports comes second (well at least that what's supposed to be said out loud, but that's another issue that I'm sure many have strong opinions on, right?). I FULLY support the Tommies hockey team, attend when I can and hope they have a lot of success this year, (I also support many of the other teams at STU) but that doesn't mean I can't suggest a bit more for other teams, does it?? Or maybe because this is a hockey forum, I shouldn't hve brought it up at all - if that is the case I apologize. I guess I'll stick to th Gleaner from now on if I want to read about the Tommies so I'm not tempted to send a comment.

  23. well hello video guy. STU Hockey gets too much money guy here. I suppose you thought the girl was me? So now a least two people have the same opinion, and it is not the same as yours? It is as simple as this. The mens hockey is funded as much as UNB and they lose. The women are funded more than any other university and they win. Last three Athletic directors were hockey coaches. I think the girl who posted has it right and you have it wrong.

  24. STU Video Guy takes it on the chin.

    ReplyDelete
  25. STU hockey may be as well funded as UNB ON THE BOOKS, but are they as well funded OFF THE BOOKS?
And not trying to start a pissing war with UNB fans.
If STU is funded as much as UNB, and this is what we've got... time for Mr. Eagles to pull a Dylan Taylor and let somebody else take over.

  26. i take one on the chin? I'll give that person respect but no, didnt give his name, mystery keyboard warrior. How does anyone know its not the same person who both has complained about STU hockey and money. Magic of the internet on this fourm that you can two, three people at once to make it look like people agree with you. Either way, neither of you have it right because neither of you have any facts.

  28. STU Hockey Gets Too Much Money Guy(SHGTMMG) here. Sorry, I don't play mister Dress up for you Video guy. Those other folks are just people who you trash talk.

Fact #1 look at the female athletic scholarships offered by STU for the females. All of the info is online. Many of us checked it out during the UNB beheading of the female program.

Fact. Any major male junior player gets money for university, year for year I believe. For those not having played junior, the athletic scholarships can be given by the university.
Fact. Before at or during each game, UNB and STU thank sponsors, therefore both programs are funded aside from what the caps allowed per player.

fact. UNB program attracts more players because it has evolved.

fact UNB women folded because they would not invest the money that STU, and X would.

Fact. More female teams will go club.

You can pretend to argue and go on and on, but books/websites/conversations were investigated when UNB walked away from female hockey. At that time many of us boycotted UNB games and began to follow STU hockey.

Sadly STU has thrown tons of money at hockey and ignored the club teams. Same as UNB
