Congratulations $quirrels

We hate 'em. We love to mock 'em. But we like to think the rivalry - heated as it can be at times - is a friendly one. So congratulations to the $quir... er, UNB Varsity Reds (nearly choked on that one) on winning the 2008 - 2009 CIS National Championship today over Western.

  1. I can honestly say that at moments like this I am truly ashamed to be a Tommies fan. Congrats UNB! It's too bad that our fans are more concerned with mocking your team than supporting ours.

  2. Mmm, 3 or 4 years of running a website, covering all the Tommies games, recapping them for us here, posting articles for us... you're right the people here really need a lesson in supporting the Tommies!

  3. Supporting the Tommies here is one thing... supporting the Tommies at the rink is another.

  4. as much as I dont like the format of the CIS championships, UNB played a great tournament.

More on the format, I was watching the interview with Marc Rancourt of SMU of him talking about a Memorial Cup format with the 3 winners of the conferences and the host playing for the trophy and I agree. Its brutal to have a team sneak in the backdoor on a wild card and win the whole thing when they couldnt win their own conference. If it was like a Memorial Cup format, it should have been Alberta, SMU, Western and Lakehead.

    But congrats to our campus-mates.

  5. I really like the backdoor picture and the write-up.The creativity of this is second to none.
Next year will be STU's year.Way to go Black's Harbour and all the Former Tommies.

  6. And all of the players Meryl Stewart the coach payed for. lol, a semi-pro team in a beer league = Borderline ridiculous.

  7. Who cares about senior hockey anymore. SHL teams would get spanked by an Allan Cup team, the level is nowhere near comparable

  8. Everyone soooo quick to criticize UNB for getting in the back door. When is the last time STU made it in any door? I agree winning an AUS Championship and the CIS Championship would of been ideal. But i bet if you asked SMU on Monday which trophy they would of prefered the would of loved to run and get in the back door.

  9. Yeah...UNB can't always win the AUS like STU has done before every one of their National Championships...oh wait...

Btw...spending all that money just to win the 'coveted' Southern NB Senior Championship is a bit ridiculous...but I guess people can do whatever they want with their money...

  10. C'mon... don't get your tails in a knot. All in good fun, right?

  11. Black's Harbour is not only team that pays their players,I hear Nackawic does too. There are others too I m sure.I guess not Bud Lights.
The Squirrels and their fans should enjoy their backdoor win ,because STU will be much better in 2009-2010.

  14. If SMU didn't choke against UWO they very well could have won it all but we will never know because they didn't win when it counted the most. UNB had to beat number 1 ranked Alberta on their way to their championship win. No asterix needed.

  15. Well I hope STU is better next year...but what's to say UNB isn't better next year to...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well the Tommies did win the pond hockey tournament at Kilarney Lake. And you will note that they were minus a coach for that win. I have a plan to gain pairity with UNB....MacDougall leaves to coach the Sea Dogs and Eagles goes to coach UNB. With in a year the Reds would be playing poorly and only 200 fans would attend.

Why not face the facts. University hockey is just a place for ex juniors to keep playing. STU is getting no fans for either of it's programs. Why not put the money into club teams and involve more students.

  17. UNB is not getting a whole lot of fans for a team that is suppose to be so good. They do if something is on the line or give tickets away.Only 700 people to a celebration, that is not any fan support there.

  18. "UNB is not getting a whole lot of fans for a team that is suppose to be so good."

    1) They have the second highest attendence in the CIS year after year (and rank 1st if you compare their attendence with the population of the area)...so I would say that is alot of fans, atleast compared to every other team in the country.

    2) I would argue that no other team in the AUS would get 700 fans for something similar had they won the National Championship...heck, half the league doesn't even average that for a game

    3) Why do STU fans continuously worry about what is going on in UNB-land...shouldn't they be concerned about their own team and what needs to be done in the offseason to get the team back to being a playoff team...I don't get it, I'm a UNB fan and am excited about the summer and UNB recruiting news...and it seems STU fans are also thinking about UNB most of the time rather than worrying about what players might be coming on board for the upcoming season...

  19. "Only 700 people to a celebration, that is not any fan support there" This oil slick guy is laughable, stating that 700 fans or less to an event is bad attendence. This coming from a team who's average home attendence was 356 and their year total was 4977 (less then what UNB had for the last WEEKEND of the regular season)

Best of luck to the tommies in off season recruiting. Looking forward to a competitive battle of the hill.

  20. We STU fans are not worried about the Tommies ,because they will be better.Good teams like UNB can be knocked off their high horse.A so called #1 team in the country should be getting sell outs all the time.
Daily Gleaner Bruce Hallihan had in a write-up,where STU fans are dwindling, well UNB does not sell out or get many more.

  21. Oilslick your laughable, I agree.

UNB has more staff working at the aitken center, then STU has fans.

    UNB = AUS Warriors
    STU = Internet/Blog Warriors.

  22. UNB sold out two or three of their last six home games...when is the last time STU sold out a game in their rink (which, I might add, is about a third the size of the AUC)? Btw...for all this attendence talk...I do believe STU's attendence has been going down consistently the last few years while UNB's has been going in the opposite direction.

"We STU fans are not worried about the Tommies ,because they will be better." - Like I said earlier...I hope so...it would be pretty bad if they got worse, but then again their point totals have decreased or stayed the same the last 4 years running so anything is possible I guess...

    ReplyDelete
  23. It must just kill STU fans that UNB is now the premier hockey program in the country...

    ReplyDelete
  24. ..it certainly doesn't help that is for sure. Thanks for pointing that out #%&* @#$%.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If your team is that good they should sell out every game.STU will be way better, and are not far from that.
    OILSlick

    ReplyDelete
  26. So by that token then...a team like Alberta should draw much more than 1500 or whatever they get a game...considering they are the greatest CIS program of all time and are great every single season...I'm afraid CIS teams, no matter how goos year in and year out, aren;t going to sell out a 3700 rink every game...I doubt even a Q team in Fredericton would

STU is far from what? Selling out every game or being as good as UNB?? I'm not convinced they are...

    ReplyDelete
  27. STU is not far from being a much better team next season. If they are such good teams why don't people go out to the games,{Alberta and UNB]?
STU may not be as good as UNB ,but they will be betterand in this league anything can happen.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cmon...to say "if Alberta or UNB is so good why don't they draw more" is kind of silly, obviously they are good teams and to say otherwise is just ignorant. I don't know why more people don't go to their games...maybe because the fact that, unfortunately, most Canadians don't give a rat's ass about CIS hockey is why...

Also, just because a team is good doesn't mean it is going to draw well...look at SMU...we should be ripping on their "support" more than any team. I think you STU fans just need to accept that right now, at this very minute, UNB has one of the best programs in the country and one of the top two attendence figures....could that all change next year? Sure...the AUS is going to be very tough next year and there are a handful of teams that could win the conference...but to sit here and rip on UNB because they don't sell out every game (even though they have the second highest attendence in the country are one of maybe 2 or 3 teams that can sell out a game)...I mean cmon...I think they are doing a pretty damn good job. Heck, if UNB played at the LBR they would sell out every game...would that be more impressive than what they do now??

    ReplyDelete
  29. But anyways...enough of that...does anyone know who STU has lined up for next year...has anything been announced in terms of potential recruits?? Do you guys think MacFarlane is the answer in net?

    ReplyDelete
  30. What is the point of playing in a rink that can hold a seating capacity of 3700 and house a real good hockey team and not fill more seats all the time? It could be the prices, some do not like the AUC and that not everyone is a UNB fan. Those are conclusions I came to.
Ben McFarlane is a very good goalie, but another one besides the back-up now would not hurt.

  31. LOL ^

UNB fans you realize he's just trolling. No fan of a team that averages 200 fans would rant about a team with the best average.

    ReplyDelete
  32. "If your team is that good they should sell out every game." So by Oil Slicks logic then New Jersey and Detroit should sell out every game and Toronto will have the leagues lowest attendence. Duh doesn't work like that. Glad to see the rest of the STU fans have a brain. And as for ticket prices, STU's prices for an adult are only 2.00 cheaper a game so that clearly isn't a deciding factor. Oil Slick has never made an intelligent comment and is more focused on egging his neighbours house then trying to fix his own. STU needs to rid of people like this if they hope to move forward.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oil slick's logic is that she doesn't like Squirrels because they gloat, they are short sighted, and have no conscience. SHE can say what ever SHE wants and I for one would take a thousand more of her kind as STU fans. She plainly has you wrapped.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Really, Oilslick doesn't like "Squirrels" because they have simply owned the Tommies over the last 3 years or so... I know this for a fact. The Tommies, however, do appear to be heading in the right direction with their new recruits... how it plays out next season, though, is anyone's guess. Hopefully, the Tommies will turn things around... at least then all of the whining and bitching will stop.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm sure STU would like 1000 more of her to...it would more than quadruple their attendence...

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am glad to see that someone filled these people in that OilSlick is female. It may not be so much she don't like the team, more the fans.Like the team think they know too much and whatever they say is right and sounds intelligent. If you are calling one STU fan not intelligent ,you are calling every STU that.OILslick is probably smarter then every Squirrel who writes on this site.

  37. Thank you to SquirrelH8tr and Yankee fan for the nice comments said about me.
To the guy who wrote about the ticket prices.During the regular season they are 2:00 less then a UNb game, during the playoffs they are 4:00 dollars less.
Of course STU fans know nothing ,but Squirrels fans know everything,so probably thinks that is not true.
STU has one new recruit ,and there will no doubt be more,so next season looks to be great already.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That is real nice ,calling all STU fans unintelligent. Not all smart people went to UNB,that is for sure.

  41. "Yankee fan", you're missing the point. Not all smart people went to UNB... all smart people are fans of UNB.

    ReplyDelete
  42. to the dude above me, thats a really ignorant comment. I know tons of UNB fans, who arent really all that bright about hockey. They are just blind of the glitz and glamour of the UNB hockey program. If they werent good, it would just be the hardcore UNB fans left, much like the STU fans. No bandwagoners

    ReplyDelete
  43. You are right video guy, very ignorant comment. Don't believe I missed the point. You may have though. If not all smart people went toUNB how can all smart people be fans of UNB?.So all stupid people cheer for STU.You really are mean.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Now that really makes a lot of sense... do you really think that only people that went to UNB are fans of UNB? I think not.
