Panthers top Tommies in playoff style battle

The St. Thomas Lady Tommies headed to Alberton, PEI this afternoon in search of a big win versus the UPEI Panthers.  Unfortunately it didn't go as planned, as the Panthers dispatched the Tommies 2 to 1.

UPEI scored a powerplay marker in the first and second period to account for both of their goals.  The Tommies answered late in the third period at 19:51 when Dani Miller connected with the extra skater on the ice for STU.  Final shots were 21 - 17 for PEI.

With the win the Panthers move three points ahead of St. Thomas for third position in the AUS and the Tommies slip to fifth, as the Mount Alison Mounties forced U de M to a shoot out to gain a valuable point, moving them into sole possession of fourth.

The Tommies will face the Saint Mary's Huskies next Sunday at 2 PM.  Of course Randy Corey will have the play by play on Tommies TV.

Well kiss that 12 game losing streak good-bye because our Tommies defeated the St-FX X-Men 2 to 1 in a shoot out tonight.  The win was the fourth of the year for STU - one more than last year - and more importantly keeps us 4 points behind the X-Men for the final playoff position.

The best part of this game was in overtime and the shoot out but the Tommies had to get there first.  STU scored early in the first at 4:29 off the stick of Jordan Scott (Gallant, Cheremetiev) for a 1 - 0 lead that would last until the third.  St. Thomas would come close several times but had to lean heavily on Charles Lavigne most of the way to get the game to overtime.  Shots were 12 - 6 for STU in the first, 17 - 12 for X in the second, and 9 - 1 in the third for X.  The X-Men broke Lavigne's shut out bid with 7:25 to go in the final period.

Early in overtime, Jonathan Bonneau rushed in and fired a laser beam square off the crossbar to come oh so close to ending it.  St-FX found some composure and came close to scoring themselves several times, if not for Lavigne.  OT was back and forth with shots favouring X 9 to 3 but it would solve nothing.

In the shoot out the X-Men would shoot first.  Jordan Scott, Jonathan Bonneau, and Randy Cameron would shoot for STU.  The X-Men missed on their first three shooters, although one got by Lavigne but trickled out and hit the post.  Scott was stoned, Bonneau rang one off the crossbar, and Cameron missed.  The fourth X shooter scored and it was up to Robert Zandbeek to score and he did, going five hole.  The fifth X shooter missed, which set up Yuri Cheremetiev.  Yuri made no mistake with a back hand toe drag putting it high out of the reach of the X-Men goaltender Morgan Clark for the winner.

STU gets their first win of 2012 and 3 out of 4 points in NS this weekend.  They return home next week to face the very same SMU and St-FX teams in their last visits to the LBR.

Tommies defeat Mounties, moving on up

The Lady Tommies defeated Mount Allison this evening 3 to 1 to earn themselves a tie with the Mounties for fourth in the AUS standings.  Julia Sharun was lights out fantastic facing 41 shots for the win.

The Tommies got the game off on the right foot when Katie Brewster blocked a shot, scooted in on a breakaway and scored unassisted at 1:27.  Jordan Miller (MacIsaac, McTaggart) would get a goal just one second after a MT. A penalty expired at 18:23 to send the Tommies into the intermission up two goals.  Shots were 12 - 10 in the first for STU.

The second period was all Mount Allison and if not for the amazing goaltending of Julia Sharun, the Tommies would have been in big trouble.  The Mounties scored 24 seconds into the period but Shurun shut the door the rest of the way facing 21 shots in the period.

In the third, Sharun continued to shine and Captain Kayla Blackmore, from behind the goal line, scored only 12 seconds into the period for a little insurance.  STU would make it stand up and win the proverbial 4 point game and now sit one point behind UPEI for 3rd position in the AUS.

St. Thomas will head to Alberton, Prince Edward Island tomorrow afternoon to take on the UPEI Panthers in a playoff style show down. No broadcast is available and do not expect any updates from this one.  We'll share any news we get, as soon as we get it.  GO TOMMIES GO!!

Collier excellent in OT loss to Huskies

An amazing effort by rookie goaltender Justin Collier wasn't enough for the Tommies tonight, as the SMU Huskies defeated STU 3 to 2 in overtime.  Collier faced 43 shots and made several large saves to keep the game close.

The Tommies were first on the board at 8:07 of the opening period when Sebastien Bernier made a nice pass off the boards that sprung a waiting Yuri Cheremetiev on a clearcut breakaway.  Yuri made no mistake with a beautiful move to put STU up 1 - 0.   The Huskies pressed hard late in the period and out shot STU 8 to 4 in first.

Saint Mary's came out gunning in the second but STU capitalized on a powerplay at 6:06 when Randy Cameron (Scott, Cheremetiev) converted to increase the lead to 2 - 0.  Collier closed the door for the rest of the period with SMU out shooting STU 15 - 6.

St. Thomas had a glorious chance early in the third to go up by three goals but the puck wouldn't settle down enough for Bryan Main to make good on the open net chance.

Saint Mary's finally broke the goose egg at 12:30 on the PP and tied the game 1:40 later.  Both goals were perfect shots past Collier, who had no chance on either.  The game would head to overtime tied at 2's and shots in SMU's favour 38 - 16.

The overtime was a back and forth affair with even play for both teams.  The Huskies would capitalize on a point shot that was deflected past Collier for the winner at 6:03.  Saint Mary's named the STU goalie first star of the game over SMU's Chris MacKinnon, who scored the overtime goal and had an assist.  Pretty classy IMO.  Some other teams could take notes.

STU will have little time to lick their wounds as they head to Antigonish and tangle with the sixth place X-Men tomorrow night at 7 PM.

Tommies hit the road this weekend

I guess we will have to wait and see if the storm the meteorologists are calling for today actually hits but the men are scheduled to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies tonight in Halifax.  The Tommies have seven games left and sit six points behind St-FX for the final playoff position.  Game time tonight from the Halifax Forum is 7 PM, pending any weather related cancellation.  Watch the webcast HERE. The Lady Tommies are in Sackville Saturday evening at 7 PM to take on the Mount Allison Mounties.  St. Thomas sits two points behind Mt. A for fourth place with the Mounties having a game in hand.  This should be a good tilt and you can listen to it HERE.

The men travel to Antigonish on Saturday night and will take on the X-Men.  The Tommies defeated X the last time they played at the KMC back in October.  If they have any hope of squeaking into the playoffs this is a must win.  Game time is 7 PM and you can watch the game HERE.

Sunday afternoon will see the Ladies head over the fixed link to PEI for a game against the third place Panthers.  STU currently sit three points back of UPEI.  The game will be played in the Town of Alberton in western PEI.  Game time is 3 PM and there is no broadcast.

Tigers snap Tommies win streak

It certainly wasn't the ending to the weekend the Tommies were looking for but regardless of today's outcome - a 3 to 2 loss vs. Dalhousie - the Ladies can hold their heads high with two big wins over the top teams in the conference in the past four games.

This afternoon it was the Tigers who struck first on the powerplay 7:27 into the game.  St. Thomas responded 5 minutes later at 13:21 when Kayla Blackmore (Fox, MacDonald) raced out on a break away and made a great move and tied the game at 1's.  The period ended with STU leading in shots 12 - 11.

The Tommies played a good second period and capitalized early when Jordan Miller (D. Miller, MacDonald) went top shelf at 3:22.  Dalhousie had few quality chances but their sniper Jocelyn LeBlanc scored two goals in a minute and thirty second span on STU defensive miscues.  The period ended with the score 3 to 2 and shots even at four apiece.

In the third period the Tommies had several chances but couldn't convert for the tying goal.  Kristin Wolfe took the tough luck loss facing 21 shots, while STU fired back with 23.

The Lady Tommies will be back in action next weekend on the road against Mount Allison and UPEI, both teams they are jockeying with in the standing.  There is no broadcast available for UPEI on Sunday but Mount Allison has a radio broadcast (surprise, surprise) HERE and I will post the link again this weekend on Facebook and Twitter.

Tommies take down X-Women

The bigger they are the harder they fall and today the Lady Tommies took down the heavy weight St-FX X-Women 4 to 1.  St-FX started the day in first place but because of their loss to STU and Moncton's win versus Dalhousie, they sit in second place now while St. Thomas leap frogs Mount Allison for fourth.

The Tommies came out hard in the first period and their effort was rewarded at 8:56 when Cassidy McTaggart (Scott) rushed down the right wing and fired a bullet past the X keeper.  Less than 2 minutes later at 10:49 Brianne Bohn tried to centre a pass from the side of the net but the puck had eyes and found its way behind the X goalie into the back of the net to make it 2 - 0.  St. Thomas would take this lead into the second period.

The middle frame was scoreless but the X-Women pushed hard to get back in the game outshooting the Tommies 16 - 5.  Julia Sharun played an excellent game and held the fort during the barrage of shots.

The third was no different with X looking to get back in the game.  They would cut the lead in half 1:58 into the final period but STU answered right back 28 seconds later at 2:26 when Jordan Miller scored unassisted.  X had several power plays in the period but Sharun et al. were up to the task.  With under a minute to play Kayla Blackmore (McTaggart) would get a partial break on a PP and salt the game away to make the final 4 to 1.

Final shots were 43 - 16 for St-FX and Julia Sharun was first star of the game.  The Tommies are back at it tomorrow afternoon versus the Dalhousie Tigers, 2 PM at the LBR.

In men's action tonight from Moncton, U de M defeated STU 7 to 2.  STU led early on goals by Steve Sanza and Robert Zandbeek but Les Aigles scored two quick ones and tied the game.  Moncton scored 4 goals in the second period to salt it away.  Charles Lavigne played two periods allowing 6 goals and Justin Collier came in for the third period allowing 1.

Tommies fall in shootout to Panthers

The Tommies picked up one point tonight in a shootout loss to UPEI.  Final score was 4 to 3 but the story of the game were chances that STU couldn't capitalize on.  More on that later.

St. Thomas opened the scoring on Yuri Cheremetiev's (Cameron, Reich) first of the season at 3:43.  Randy Cameron went behind the net and fed Yuri a perfect pass, who put it past Jhase Sniderman in the PEI net.  Cheremetiev would get a partial break and made no mistake sniping a top corner at 8:39 with assists to Morin and Cameron.  PEI would cut the lead late in the period and the teams would head to the first intermission with STU on top 2 - 1.

Jonathan Bonneau (Bernier, Sanza) would restore the two goal lead just 37 seconds into the second frame when he rushed down the left side and wristed a shot five hole for a 3 to 1 lead.  STU would hold that lead until 18:30 when PEI scored on a three on one break to make the score 3 to 2 .  Charles Lavigne would take a penalty after the goal but STU weathered the storm and took the one goal lead into the third.

PEI would run into penalty trouble in the third period, including a full two minute, two man disadvantage but the Tommies could not score.  The Panthers would then come down and score at 18:06 to tie the game.  Before the period ended STU would be sent to another full two minute, two man powerplay, which would run into overtime.  The Tommies could not capitalize again and the inability to score would ultimately cost them, as the overtime solved nothing. 

The Tommies shot first in the shootout.  Felix Poulin, Yuri Cheremetiev, and Randy Cameron would all miss on their shots.  PEI's third shooter, Chris DeSousa, would end it when the puck he shot squeaked through Charles Lavigne's pads for the winner.  Final shots were 39 - 35 in favour of STU.

Next game is tomorrow night in Moncton versus the Aigles Bleus, who defeated UNB tonight 5 to 1 in the Squirrels worst loss of the season.

Squirrels win final battle at LBR

It finishes as it started way back in 1960's.  A UNB win.  On the strength of 4 powerplay goals, 2 in the final two minutes of play, UNB takes the Lou Chabot Memorial Game 5 to 1.

UNB scored 2 goals in the first and another in the second period for a three goal lead heading into the final frame. 

The Tommies picked up the intensity in the third and played much better.  Randy Cameron (Morehouse, Chermetiev) scored at 7:59 to cut the lead but penalty trouble late in the period derailed any hope of a comeback.  A "too many men penalty" and a questionable call of "hitting to the head" put STU down two men with under 3 minutes to play and UNB capitalized twice for the final of 5 to 1.

I think I heard the old LBR whisper Goodbye to their old tenant UNB as they left the ice for the final time.  Maybe not so much lately but we sure have had a lot of great games in the old barn with them.  It's been fun when all is said and done.  See you soon old Squirrel friends, a new setting will be the venue the next time we meet on our home ice.

18th annual Lou Chabot Memorial Game goes tonight

It's that time once again when the St. Thomas University community pays tribute to a young man that passed away much too soon.  Tonight marks the 18th annual Lou Chabot Memorial Game and the last time it will be played at the LBR where Lou skated proudly in Green and Gold for two seasons.

Tonight's game against UNB will be the third meeting of the season between the cross campus rivals, both won by the Squirrels, including an overtime victory the last time they played in December.

Both teams are currently on losing streaks, so one will end tonight.  UNB has lost two straight and STU 7 in a row, not to mention something like a 29 game nightmare at the hands of our favourite pals in red and black.

The game tonight will also be UNB's last foray into the old "Beav".  This was of course their home rink for 20 odd years until the AUC opened in the mid 70's.  Rest assured they will be looking to close out their final game at the LBR with a W.

STU season passes will not be honoured this evening.  Tickets are available at the JB O'Keefe Fitness Centre on campus, MacTavish's Source for Sport on Queen Street, and at the LBR after 4 PM.

Tommies complete huge weekend with win over UPEI

The Lady Tommies finished up a four point weekend with a 4 - 2 win over the UPEI Panthers this afternoon at the LBR.  With yesterdays big win over Moncton and today's victory, the suddenly surging Tommies sit three point back of UPEI for third position in the AUS with a game in hand.

Today, a strong first period was enough to keep UPEI at bay.  The Panthers struck first on the powerplay at 4:05 getting one past a screened Julia Sharun.  The Tommies would respond with three straight powerplay goals of their own.  Katie Brewster (Fox, Blackmore) would get a nice goal off a deflection at 9:17.  Fifty-three seconds later Cassidy McTaggart (Brewster, Scott) would pot her fourth of the season at 10:10.  Kayla Blackmore (Fox) would score the eventual game winner at 16:36 on a two man advantage.  Shots favoured STU 16 - 10 in the period.

The second period was all UPEI despite the Tommies having several power plays.  UPEI cut the lead at 9:09 to make it 3 - 2.  STU didn't register a shot on goal until the 17:08 mark and were out shot by a whooping 15 - 2 margin in the middle stanza.

St. Thomas was able to right the ship in the third and contained UPEI to many perimeter shots that Julia Sharun handled with ease.  Kayla Blackmore (D. Miller) scored a highlight reel breakaway goal at 14:28 for a little cushion and ultimately close out the scoring.  Final shots on goal were 39 to 26 for UPEI.

The Tommies next game is this Saturday afternoon against first place St-FX.

Axemen down Tommies

The Acadia Axemen bid farewell to the LBR, earning a 3-1 win over the STU Tommies in their final visit to the old barn.  The Axemen staked a 2-0 first period lead with goals from Spencer Jezegou and Chris Moulson, outshooting the Tommies 11-10 in the opening frame.

Jezegou extended the lead to 3-0 in the second, before Steve Sanza got St. Thomas on the scoresheet, beating Acadia goaltender Peter DiSalvo with a shot from the right wing side to make it 3-1.  Despite being outshot 18-2 in the second, the Tommies managed to stay within 2 goals of the Axemen over 40 minutes.

STU improved with a much more aggressive forecheck in the final stanza,  outshooting Acadia 11-8 in the third, but could find no solution for DiSalvo, seeing their losing streak extend to 7 games, with a matchup against the Squirrels coming up Wednesday night in the annual Lou Chabot Memorial game.

Tommies hand Moncton second loss of season

Finally, the Tommies got some revenge on first place Moncton defeating Les Aigles 3 - 2 in overtime this afternoon at the JLL arena.  Katie Brewster was the heroine scoring the tying and winning goals for STU.

U de M scored the first goal in the opening frame but STU tied it up before the period ended.  Courtney Fox (McTaggart) tallied her second of the season at 16:11.  Shots favored St. Thomas 11 to 9.

Moncton would retake the lead at 2:40 of the second period.  It turned out to be the only goal of the period as STU out shot U de M 8 to 7.

You could tell the Tommies really wanted this game and pressed hard in the third.  Danielle Miller was denied when she found the puck all alone in front of Moncton's goalie Kathy Desjardins with under 7 minutes to play.  Katie Brewster (McTaggart, MacIsaac) scored the tying goal at 15:42 to eventually force overtime.  Shots were 6 to 5 for St. Thomas.

The overtime lasted until 7:56 when Katie Brewster (P. MacDonald, McTaggart) got the puck by the right faceoff dot, forced her way to the net and jammed the winning goal home.  Kristin Wolfe picks up her first victory of the season.  The win sees the Tommies regain 5th spot and now sit 3 points behind UPEI for 4th.  STU plays the Panthers tomorrow afternoon at the LBR.

Full day of Tommies hockey

Three games are on tap today for Tommies hockey teams.  Two at the LBR and one on the road in Moncton.

It's men's hockey alumni weekend at St. Thomas and the old timers will battle each other in the Green and Gold game starting at 1:15 PM.  Players will be competing from the past five decades of Tommies hockey.  Good luck to all and have a great time.

There is no sugar coating tonight's game against Dalhousie, STU had to win and they weren't up to the task losing 7 to 4.  In four games this season the Tommies lost all of them, this being the worst of the bunch.

The Tigers held period leads of 2 to 1 after the first,  4 to 2 after two, and the final 7 to 4.  Dalhousie leap frogs the Tommies in the standings and take over sole possession of seventh in the AUS.  Scoring for STU were Sebastien Bernier, Alex Labonte, Felix Poulin, and John MacDonald with his first as a Tommie.

On the plus side it was great to see Bernier and MacDonald score and have Alex Labonte score in his first game back since before Christmas.

The Tommies will have to pick up the pieces from tonight and get ready for a tough game tomorrow against an Acadia team that lost tonight to Moncton.  STU remains 5 back of St-FX, who lost to PEI this evening.

Tommies let one slip away against Dalhousie

This afternoon in Halifax, the Dalhousie Tigers stormed back in the third period with 4 goals to defeat STU 4 to 3.

Playing their first game since late November the Tommies came out ready in the first period scoring 2 goals in the opening frame.  Dani Miller (Blackmore) opened the scoring at 2:33 and Jordan Miller (D. Miller) scored on a 2 on 1 at 17:38.

The second period was scoreless and STU was looking good heading into the third.  DAL out shot STU 20 - 15 over two periods.

The Tigers scored two goals in the third to tie half way through the period.  Eric MacIsaac (Brewster) restored STU's advantage on the powerplay at 11:56 but Dalhousie roared back with two goals in 44 seconds shortly after and held on for the 4 to 3 victory.  Final shots were 27 to 22 in favor of the Tigers.

Newcomer Chelsea Fiander made her St. Thomas debut today and had three shots on goal.  Julia Shaurn was tagged for the loss in net.

With the win the Tigers leap frog STU for 5th place and sit one point up on the Tommies.  The Tommies have a game in hand as DAL played yesterday and lost to Moncton in OT.

Acadia slips past Tommies 3 - 2

Same old story for the 2011-2012 Tommies, close but not enough to win.  The Axemen scored two powerplay goals and defeated STU 3 to 2.

Acadia scored the only goal of the first period at 3:54 on the PP and dominated the first 5 minutes of play.  St. Thomas would respond with better territorial play but would have to settle for the one goal deficit after one period.  Shots were 13 - 9 Acadia.  

The Tommies would tie the game at 8:19 of the second when Yuri Chermetiev made a nice rush down the left wing and fired a great pass to Brad Gallant right in front of the net, who made no mistake.  The Axemen would retake the lead at 17:01 on a bang bang play in front of the net, as the puck made it past Charles Lavigne in the STU goal.  Acadia led after two periods 2 to 1 and in the shot department 12 to 7, 25 - 16 overall. 

STU struck early in the third period.  After Acadia just missed going ahead by two goals, the Tommies turned around with Randy Cameron and Jonathan Bonneau going in on a 2 on 1.  Bonneau gained the blue line and then sent a crisp pass to Cameron, who slapped a one timer past the Acadia goalie for the tying goal.  

Acadia started to attack more later in the third but St. Thomas was blocking shots all over the place and sacrificing the body in an attempt to win the game.  Unfortunately a bad penalty would cost STU as Acadia scored with exactly 5 minutes to play on the resulting powerplay.  Try as they might -and STU did have a few legitimate chances- the tying goal just wasn't to be found.  Final shots 40 - 23 Acadia.

The Tommies stay 5 points back of St-FX, as they lost 2 - 1 against PEI.  Dalhousie stays a point behind in last place getting blistered by Moncton 5 - 1.  Chronicle Herald - Axemen edge Tommies; grab second

Tigers squeak out 1 - 0 win over Tommies

Another game against the lowly Dalhousie Tigers and another loss for St. Thomas.  That amounts to 3 games played this season against DAL and 3 tight victories for them, their only 3 the entire season.

Tonight, Bobby Nadeau held the Tommies off the score sheet and picked up the 1 - 0 victory.  The Tigers scored on the PP at 3:59 of the third period for the only goal of the game when a soft wrister from the point was deflected by Charles Lavigne, who was brilliant in net.

Final shots on goal were 28 to 20 for the Tigers.  The Tommies head to Acadia tomorrow night and tangle with the Axemen.  Acadia defeated Moncton tonight 5 to 2.  Chronicle Herald - Dal wins in Donnelly's debut

Tommies invade Nova Scotia this weekend

After a month break in university hockey action both our men's and women's teams gear up for regular season games this weekend against Nova Scotia opponents.

The men start on Friday night against last place Dalhousie.  CAUTION, Don't let their 2-11-1 record fool you.  The Tigers are coming off a first half that saw them win two games, both against STU.  Injuries took there toll on DAL in the first half but their injured players have returned to action after the Christmas break.  Not to mention that Dalhousie also saw a coaching change over the holidays and they are going to come out looking to impress.  The Tommies will be in tough.  The game starts at 7 PM and the webcast can be found HERE.

Saturday night St. Thomas heads north to take on 4th place Acadia. Any game at Acadia Arena is a tough one on the olympic size ice and this will be STU's 4th game (1 regular season, 2 exhibition) there this year without any success yet.  We need the points to stay in the playoff picture so a big game is a must.  The game starts at 7 PM and you can find the webcast HERE.

The Lady Tommies are in a similar circumstance to the men, they are being chased by Tigers.  STU sits two points up on Dalhousie for 5th position in the AUS and face them Sunday afternoon at 2 PM.  The game will be streamed live HERE. 

The Tommies have added forward Chelsea Fiander to the forward ranks for the second half.  A native of Regina, SK Chelsea had 6 goals and 6 assists in 28 games for the Prince Albert A&W Bears last season.  She was a team mate of current Tommie Danielle Miller.  Good luck Chelsea and welcome to STU!

Tommies lose close one to Moncton

In the Tommies final tune-up before the 2nd half gets underway STU dropped a 3-2 decision against U de M in exhibition play at the LBR.

Moncton jumped out to a 2 - 0 first period lead and out shot the home side by a whopping 18 - 3 margin.  It certainly appeared that St. Thomas was working out the holiday turkey legs in the early going.

The Tommies roared back in the 2nd to tie the game on a PP goal by Steve Sanza (Main) and a beauty deflection by Chris Morehouse (Sanza).  The shots were even at 7 apiece. 

Moncton scored the winner at 1:28 of the 3rd on the PP.  The Tommies came close to tying the game with just over 2 minutes to play as Andrew Andricopoulos rang one off the bar but it wasn't meant to be on this night.  Charles Lavigne played two periods facing 25 shots while Justin Collier faced 13 shots in the 3rd.

The regular season gets underway on Friday night in Halifax against Dalhousie.  A webcast for the game will be available and we'll have that for you on Friday.
