St. Thomas bids for 2014 and 2015 women's hockey nationals - St. Thomas University has submitted a bid to host hockey nationals for 2 years beginning in 2014.   Six other universities across the country have also applied including Manitoba,  Western Ontario, Windsor, McGill, Calgary, and AUS foe Moncton.

According to women's coach Peter Murphy, STU has forwarded an excellent bid and he hopes that the CIS administrators think so as well.   CEO of CIS, Marg McGregor, was pleased with the interest shown in hosting women's hockey nationals.   CIS LINK

This will be the first CIS national championship that St. Thomas has bid for.  GOOD LUCK!

2011 AUS AGM Highlights - Men's and women's hockey at STU will have company this coming year as Cross County has been added to the AUS stable at the university.  This will be the first year since 2002 that hockey will have company.  AUS women's rugby was last played at St. Thomas then.

Men's hockey will utilize a 2 referee system in 50% of it regular season games this coming year.  Also, the AUS will be implementing NHL icing rules.  No touch icing will remain but no line changes will be permitted for the team that ices the puck.  AUS LINK and DG LINK

Memorial Cup Champions - Congratulations to the Saint John Sea Dogs on capturing their first CHL championship and being the first Maritime team to win the Memorial Cup.  New Maryland native and STU hockey school teacher Mike Thomas accepted the cup last night as the Sea Dogs captain.  Congrats also to current Tommie Christian Morin who started off this past year with the Sea Dogs.  I'm sure it was bitter sweet for Christian but we know how excited he must be for his former team mates.

The St. Thomas Tommies are pleased to announce the addition of another recruit for the 2011-2012 season.  Danielle Miller of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan will be wearing the green and gold this fall for STU.

Danielle (Dani) is a 5' 10" forward who played Midget AAA hockey this past year for the Prince Albert A&W Bears of the SFMAAAHL and was second on her team in scoring with 30 points (15g, 15a) in 28 games.  This was her first season in Midget Triple A and led the league in rookie scoring.

Prior to moving to Prince Albert she played Midget AA hockey for 2 years in the Saskatoon Comets league.  Dani is a gifted athlete and has also excelled in soccer, as well as in the classroom where she has been an honours student.

Coach Murphy is excited to have Danielle coming to St. Thomas and have the opportunity to watch her take hockey and academics to the next level.  Welcome Dani!

Tommies bolster defense with local recruit

The STU Lady Tommies have added another piece to their 2011-12 defence with new recruit Jenna Scott of Hanwell, NB.  The 5'6 defender participated at the 2011 Canada Winter Games for Team New Brunswick, collecting 5 assists in 6 games.  Scott was a member of the Fredericton Midget Tommies in 2010-11, picking up 5 assists in 16 games.

Scott and fellow new recruit Caley Steinert will be expected to fill the void left by graduates Jessica Holt and Lucrece Nussbaum.

STU Tommies NEXT STEP All-Female Hockey School

Registrations are now being accepted for this year’s STU Tommies Next Step All-Female Hockey School. The school will run July 4-8 at the Lady Beaverbrook Rink. Limited space is available.

Novice (Recreational) - 7:30 am - 11:30 am 
One hour of ice, one hour of class, one dry land session each daily. 
$250

Atom/Peewee (Recreational)
Peewee/Bantam (Competitive)
Bantam-Midget (Advanced)
8:00 am - 4:30 pm
Two hours of ice, two class sessions, two dry-land sessions and catered lunch daily.

All groups will be led by a member of the St. Thomas Women’s Hockey Program, and instructors will feature St. Thomas coaching staff as well as members of the team and other guest coaches. All participants will receive a hockey training shirt and jersey.

Tommies add forward Erin MacIsaac

The St. Thomas Tommies have added skilled forward Erin MacIsaac to the line-up for 2011-12.  MacIsaac comes to STU via Dartmouth, NS where she played in the Metro High School League registering 25 goals and 13 assists in 21 games this past season, a league high.  She also played Midget AAA for the ProCresting Penguins scoring 12 goals and 9 assists in 22 games and adding 1 goal and 5 assists in 8 play-off games, helping her team to a silver medal.

Erin was also chosen to play for Nova Scotia at the 2011 Canada Games -which she considered to be an unbelievable experience - and garnered 1 goal and 2 assists.

She is no slouch in the classroom either and Coach Murphy is happy to be landing another top student athlete for the Lady Tommies.  She intends on getting her BA while at STU and currently has an undeclared major.   Welcome Erin!!

St. Thomas journalism grad Jamie Ross caught up with new Tommies bench boss Troy Ryan on Thrusday night at the Forest Hill Conference Centre. His Q & A session with Troy appears in today's Daily Gleaner.

 Here are a few quotes from Coach Ryan.

"Once you can get some pipelines going, players tend to take care of recruiting themselves. I think the biggest thing is going to be recruiting and trying to get some pipelines back into the Ontario Hockey League, which has kind of left the St. Thomas program in the last few years."

"It's different at the university level, where hockey is just one small piece of a big puzzle that makes up the institution. Now what I do as a hockey coach is a reflection of what the university wants to portray."

Tommies taking care of "Bizz"ness

St. Thomas has landed one of their best recruits in sometime and he won't see the ice during games. Eric Bissonnette was announced as the men's new full time Assistant Coach on Thursday night. This is fabulous news for STU as we all know that this guy has, does, and will  bleed GREEN and GOLD.

Eric needs little introduction to STU fans but to those not familiar with him he patrolled the Tommies blue line for five years back in the mid ninety's, has 2 degrees from St. Thomas, fluently bilingual, successful business owner, motivator, and well know in hockey circles throughout the region.

Looking at our new coach Troy Ryan, with the addition of Bissonnette, people will see a strong force to advance the program.  Things are not going to happen overnight, there is much work that needs to be done, but a strong foundation has been laid and this excitement around the program will help build a solid new future.

Congratulations Eric, Troy, and Tommies hockey.

Tommies add high scoring defenceman Felix-Antoine Poulin

The St. Thomas Tommies back end is starting to take shape for the 2010-11 season as Felix-Antoine Poulin has announced his intentions of playing at STU this fall.  This past year Poulin led the entire Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in points with 61 and was nominated for the leagues top defenceman award.

Prior to moving out west the swift skating D-man played junior hockey in the QJAAAHL and was that leagues top defenceman and leading point getter from the back end in 2009-10.  At 6'2" and 200 pounds Poulin should be a big help for STU's rebuilding blue line.
